Head Boy and Girl

It had been a beautiful day. The sun had just started to fall behind the garden walls. James' friends had gone home at the end of the previous week but they had arranged to meet up on the last week of the holidays in Diagon Alley to go shopping for their school supplies together. James was sat in his mother's rose garden. He was avoiding his father and Sirius. They were in the living room discussing the evening paper and James just couldn't face it. The papers will still commenting on the death of his mother almost a month after it had happened.

James was sat on a bench looking out over his mother's roses when he heard the toot of an owl over head. The owl landed next to him on the bench and held out its leg to James. There were two letters attached to the owl's leg. The first was addressed to him whilst the other was addressed to Sirius. He took his owl letter and the owl flew into the house through the open door.

Dear Mr Potter,

We hope that you are excited about returning to school for your final year at Hogwarts. We are looking forward to seeing all our returning students and meeting our new first year students.

We would also like to offer you our congratulations. You have been chosen to be our Head Boy, this year. During the selection process, the headmaster and the head of houses took great care to decide upon the best candidate. It was a very difficult decision as there were lots of contenders.

As Head Boy you will share the Head common room with the Head Girl, Lily Evans. You will need to arrange the prefect patrol schedules for both the train journeys to and from school and the school corridors throughout the year. You will have other responsibilities but I am sure Miss Evans will be more than willing to fill you in on the details.

Enclosed you will find your supply list and your new Head Boy badge.

Professor McGonagall

Deputy Headmistress

James frowned when he pulled out the badge. He sighed as he got to his feet so that he could go and show his dad. He knew that Charlus Potter would be very proud of him, but he couldn't help being sad that his mother wasn't there to share in that pride.

Lily was reading a book when her mother called her, "Lily, you've got a letter!"

Lily ran down the stairs two at a time. She had been waiting for this letter. When she got to the kitchen she took the letter from her mother's outstretched hand. She looked at it nervously before opening it. She pulled out the letter and handed it to her mother before peering into the envelope. There at the bottom of the envelope sat a red and gold badge. It was bigger than her old prefect one and instead of the letter "P" in gold writing, there were two letters, "HG". Lily screamed in delight, "I'm head girl!"

"Well done, Lily," Mrs Evans smiled happily, "I'm so proud of you."

"Thanks mum," Lily grinned as her mother passed her back the letter. Lily read over it quickly.

Dear Miss Evans,

We hope that you have enjoyed your summer and are looking forward to coming back to Hogwarts. We are very excited about welcoming back our returning students and new first year students.

We would also to offer you our congratulations. You have been chosen to be this year's Head Girl. The Headmaster felt that you had proven yourself capable throughout your prefect career.

As Head Girl you will share the Head common room with the Head Boy, James Potter. As a prefect you are very aware of the roles of the Head Boy and Girl and therefore I would ask that you help get Mr Potter up to speed.

Enclosed you will find your supply list and your new Head Boy badge.

Professor McGonagall

Deputy Headmistress

"I think we ought to celebrate," Mrs Evans grinned, "how about ice cream?"

"Huh?" Lily looked up from her letter, "oh, yeah, that would be great. Thanks mum."

Later that night Lily sat on her bed and wrote a letter to James.

Alright Potter?

So I heard the news. Congratulations!

When we meet in London next week, we should go over the role of Head Boy.

Everyone is planning on meeting at 2pm on Monday. How about if we meet for lunch at the Leaky Cauldron?

James was sat at the dinner table with Charlus and Sirius when Lily's letter arrived. Sirius was badgering him about how they would have to stop the pranks. "It's bad enough that Remus is a prefect," Sirius sighed, "but now both of you are going to be on my case. I bet they did this on purpose – they're trying to disband the marauders."

"You're being paranoid Sirius," James laughed. "Besides this isn't going to change me – I'm still Prongs."

Charlus chuckled at the boys conversation, "I think this might be cause for a new broomstick, Jamsie Boy!"

jo987_123: This is a good story, but it needs a good editor to go through this iteration and fix the mistakes. The pov changes from 1st person to 3rd person, often, and sometimes within one sentence. It needs a liberal sprinkling of punctuation marks throughout, and a decision needs to be made about the char...
