It was the summer before Senior year and I was trying to make it the best. Me and my best friend Stephanie always started our summer off at her mom Christina’s loft. The perfect view of the beach which we planned to go down to at some point, the cool air that was just enough to defend us from the crazy heat outside, and the space we had inside the building. It was the perfect summer getaway. Her mom had made the three of us cocktails which always turned out amazing considering that she was a part-time bartender.
“So what’s first on the list?” Christina asked after she poured herself a glass.
“We were going to check out the hotspots first,” Stephanie replied and I nodded.
“Then we were going to check out the mall and find the cutest outfits for senior year,” I added.
“And to finish the day off, why not spend a relaxing time on the beach and watch the sunset.”
“Sounds like fun,” Christina said with a grin while she took a sip of her cocktail.
“It will be fun,” Stephanie exclaimed. “Everything is always fun when you’re doing it with your best friend.”
She looked over at me, scrunching her face up with a grin that I mirrored back to her and soon enough the three of us laughed.
“Knock. Knock,” my mom, Juliett, voice rang down the hall.
“We’re in the kitchen,” Christina called out over her shoulder.
We continued sipping on our drinks while my mom shuffled down the hallway and when she neared us, we saw she had her hands full of half of our luggage.
“Mom,” I exclaimed, jumping up from my seat to make my way to her. “I told you I was going to get my own stuff.”
“Yeah and when was that going to be?”
I shook my head and grabbed my duffle bag from her, slinging it over my shoulder then grabbed my suitcase to free up her hand.
“What’s in the glass?” my mom asked once she was able to look at Stephanie and her mom.
“Try it,” Christina said, holding out a glass in between her and my mom.
“We should get going, Kam,” Stephanie said, jumping up from her seat.
“Going where?” my mom asked, looking at us. “You still have so much to unpack.”
“We’ll be back in time to unpack mom,” I said then got a hold of Stephanie’s wrist.
“Kameron!” she called out once we sprinted to the front door.
“Love you mom!” Stephanie and I called out in sync.
☀️
“I CAME IN LIKE A WRECKING BALL! I NEVER HIT SO HARD IN LOVE! ALL I WANTED WAS TO BREAK YOUR WALLS! ALL YOU EVER DID WAS WRECK ME!” Stephanie and I screamed in the car.
“Okay,” Stephanie started while the two of us both chuckled at our decent singing. She turned down the radio and I turned my focus to look at her. “Now that we left our mom’s behind there’s something that I have to tell you.”
“Okay…” my voice trailed in suspicion.
“There’s this beach party that’s going on across from my loft. And so I thought, well why not go check it out.”
“I don’t know Steph,” I spoke contemplating it over in my head.
“Oh come on Kammy,” Stephanie whined, glancing over at me for a second before looking at the road again. “Don’t tell me you don’t want to go?”
Stephanie was always the daredevil half of our friendship. While I was the complete opposite. I was the one to keep us out of jail and no matter how many times I said no she would usually find a way to drag into whatever crazy thing crossed her mind.
“I don’t really do parties,” I stated which was true. I hated the feeling of ten thousand people gathered in one area.
“Well, can you do them for me?”
“Steph-”
“Or,” she shrugged her shoulders. “We don’t have to go. We can just sit inside and watch the same old boring movies that our mom’s put on, missing all the images of shirtless boys our age, flashing their soaking wet abs-”
“Okay. Okay,” I said quickly. “I’ll go. Just stop talking. Please.”
“Yes!” Stephanie exclaimed then began to laugh. “I knew you wanted to go.”
“Whatever,” I said with a small chuckle.
When we got to the first hotspot in the city, Stephanie and I made our way inside the coffee/tea shop and immediately we saw two of our closest friends, Addison and Jared, who were siblings. We all embraced each other into multiple hugs before we sat down at the table where they had already ordered me and Stephanie coffee.
“Are you guys ready for senior year?” Addison asked while she brought her cup up to her lips to take a sip.
“Yesss,” Stephanie groaned and we all chuckled to agree with her mood. “Last fucking year before we can put these teachers and stupid, meaningless homework assignments behind us.”
“That part though,” Jared said, giving Stephanie a high five.
I listened to my friends talk about the plans for summer but zoned out when my eyes locked onto the most daring guy I had ever seen. His body was tanned and fit from his shoulders down, his hair wet along with the white tank top that he wore. His eyes locked on mine and immediately I felt my heart start to speed up then he smirked at me while he ran his hand through his hair.
“Earth to Kameron,” I heard Addison say and soon enough I zoned back into the conversation. “Did you even hear a single thing I just said?”
I opened my mouth ready to lie but shook my head and both Stephanie and I chuckled together. “I’m sorry Addy what did you say?” I asked.
“I asked you if you were going to attend the beach party tonight?”
“Yeah,” I said, nodding my head then traced my eyes back to the guy locking eyes with him for a second before I panicked and looked away.
I saw Jared flip his head back to look at the guy then he faced our table again before turning back around to look at the guy and when he looked at me he propped his elbows on the table with a grin. “Oh Kammy,” he spoke.
“What?” I asked, pretending like I didn’t know what he was talking about.
“Sweet little innocent Kammy,” Jared added on.
“I’m lost,” Stephanie said, looking at me and then Jared.
“Hunk behind me at the counter,” Jared said, and immediately Stephanie and Addison looked in that direction.
“Oh he’s hot,” Addison said.
“Like lifeguard hot,” Stephanie added, and then together all three of them looked at me.
“Shall we call him over?” Jared asked.
“NO!”
“Yes,” Stephanie and Addison said together.
Then once Jared turned around calling out the male’s name, getting his attention I could already tell my face was starting to turn bright red. Jared waved the guy over and without hesitation, he made his way to our table.
“What’s up, Jared?” the male asked when he got to us.
Jared shrugged his shoulders. “Not much,” he responded. “Just had a question.”
“Okay.”
“Are you going to Santa Monica beach later tonight?” Jared asked.
“I wasn’t planning on it,” the guy said with a smirk.
“You should,” Addison said, then the guy looked at her.
“Should I?”
“Don’t play that game, Callum,” Jared said, then suddenly the male looked at me and our eyes locked for the third time.
“Alright,” Callum said, looking away from me to meet Jared’s eyes. “I’ll go.”
“Great,” Jared said, then turned away from him. “That was all. Nice talking to you again.”
“Yeah,” Callum said with a snicker as he made his way away from us.
“That was fun,” Stephanie said with a grin.
“How do you know him, Jared,” I just had to ask.
“Junior year, Mrs. Joyce Algebra ll class,” he replied then took a sip of his tea. “Long story short, I gave him the answers to the test and we have talked since then.”
“Well he is cute,” Addison said, looking over her shoulder at Callum again.
“Addison,” I snarled at her and she let out a laugh when she looked at me again.
“I’m sorry,” she apologized. “He’s all yours.”
I rolled my eyes then brought my cup up to my lips to take a sip while I glanced over at Callum, looking at his body from top to bottom thinking of all the possible things that could be underneath his wet clothes.
