Serenna
"Serenna McAffrey, get your ass up and out of bed, Jesus Christ woman, your interview is in like half an hour." I whip my head to look at my clock, the same clock I've had by my bed since I was Ten. it's probably one of the only things my father has ever bought me. But mom is right, I'm going to be mega late if I don't get a move on.
I slip on my favorite skinny jeans with a soft pink off the shoulder jumper. next are my knee-high brown boots, comfy yet stylish. I throw my hair up in a high ponytail and flick some mascara through my lashes. Done. "let's go, we may just make it." mom yells as I run downstairs spraying my perfume as I go.
once in the car, mom floors it, driving way too fast for this side of town. Now don't be fooled, me and my mom are not close. we tolerate each other and she will only let me stay in the house if I get this job and pay rent. I just got my degree in business from Sanford university, my three years spend in California went all too quick.
now I'm back here in Diamond Heights, San Fran Sisco with my tail tucked between my legs because I can't find a real job, plus my last boyfriend turned out to be a real nut job and stalked me to within an inch of my life. my father is a long-distance truck driver and spends most of the time on the road. believe me, it's a good thing. he met my mother in collage. one year later I was born, or so I was told.
my father is a hard man, we are not affectionate with each other at all, I've had to many slaps, kicks and punches over the years for there to be any love between us. even my parents don't kiss and cuddle but have been married since they were Twenty-Three, I don't get either of them. "I have high hopes for this one Ser, don't fuck this up." my mother scolds me from the passenger seat.
we pull up at the club called The Ice Queen. it's a trendy bar slash restaurant by day and hip dance club by night. it's one of three in the area, the King of spades being the first and the Black Prince being the last to open this year. my interview today is for the waitress position because that's something I can do from visiting my aunt Glennda every summer.
"This place is huge." I say in awe as I look up at the giant building. the front bi-focal doors wide open so the customers sitting at the tables can enjoy being outside in the sun. "Well get in there and make a good impression, you need to start paying your way, university wasn't cheap you know." I roll my eyes at her bitter comment.
"Ok, ok, I'm going, sheesh." I answer as I step outside and walk towards the doors. the tables and chairs are not of the cheap kind, the smell of food as you walk through the door hits my empty stomach and makes it gurgle. the shiny bar to the left of the room looks elegant and expensive. the rows of liquor behind shouts, "pick me." as the mirror behind them gleams.
"Hi, welcome to The Ice Queen, how can I be of assistance." a friendly woman in a pristine uniform greets me. she has thick dark hair that's pulled high up in a ponytail and her perfect nails catch my eye as she holds her hands in front of her stomach clutching a menu. her white, short sleeve shirt doesn't have a wrinkle on it.
"Hi, I'm here for an interview, with Dalilah Rose." I reply in the poshest voice I own. she smiles and relaxes. "Ah, you must be Serenna? I nod and she waves her arm for me to follow her. "Dalilah is expecting you, she's in her office. this way." she smiles over her shoulder as we walk towards another door.
the words "office" is etched onto a white metal plate with Ice effects dripping down the sides, it looks cool against the light blue door. the pretty brunette knock on the door and the words "Come in." can be heard faintly on the other side. pretty brunette opens the door and walks us in.
the new lady who I presume is Dalilah is blonde and beautiful. she stands from her chair and walks around to greet me, her black pencil skirt and white sleeveless shirt cling to her body. "You must be Serenna." she asks holding out her hand for me to shake. "Yes mam, thanks for giving me the interview." I reply politely. she nods and looks at pretty brunette. "Thanks Mira, I'll take it from here." ok, so pretty brunette is Mira.
"It was nice to meet you, Serenna." Mira says as she walks to the door. "You, too." I smile back as she walks away and shuts the door behind her. the room is white with ice blue accents. a white desk and white leather chair, dominates the room. a white shade covers the main light and looks like a giant snowball, its looks so cool. "Please have a seat, Serenna." Dalilah says as she walks back around the desk to sit.
"Sorry for the short notice to come in, but he had several people let us down and you were already short listed to be my top pick." I smile and so does she. "You got a degree from Sanford correct." I nod and smile. "Yes, Business, but I've yet to decide what I want to do, so I thought why not work and do something fun and fulfilling while I decide." all such bullshit.
"that's a wise choice, and I'm glad. we have a good team here, jack who is the supervisor, or team leader if you will. then there's Mira who you met. Natalie, Shannon and Lewis." I nod and smile again. "We only serve lunch and dinner between the hours of Eleven and Six. then the restaurant is closed for the club to open at nine." she finishes.
"The teams are split in two, so the evening crew are Dawson, Levi, Hayley and Poppy. but to be honest both teams mix up their shifts and swap with each other so there won't be any sort of set pattern, is that something you're ok with." she asks, and I nod again. "that's fine with me, I'm not really a day person anyway, I always enjoyed the nighttime, and I suffer with insomnia, so it takes me ages to fall asleep."
"Ok then, and you're ok to be here till closing which will be just after Three in the morning." she asks, and I nod. "Yes, I have my own car so I can do whatever shifts you need me to do." I say as she writes some stuff down. "Good, that's good, ok I know you have experience, but can you talk me through it. how are you with waitressing and bar work." she asks looking at me intensely but relaxed.
"My aunt owned a dinner, so every summer I would help her out, and my uncle taught me how to make different cocktails." I smile at the memory of Uncle Harley teaching me to mix spirits at the age of fourteen. my father was not impressed, my bruised hip hurt for over a week. Dalilah beams at me obviously impressed. "Wow, I'm glad I called you in sooner, that's impressive. most of the girls hear can't make them but Lewis is like Tom cruise in the movie Cocktail." she laughs, and I join in.
"Well, I think I've seen and heard enough Serenna, I would like to formally offer you the position, when could you start." she smiles, and I let out a sigh of relief. "Now, tomorrow, whenever really, I'm just eager to get started." I chuckle, and she laughs again. I like this woman and if she's the boss I'm happy. "let's show you around and I'll send over your schedule later today, how's that." she asks standing.
I follow her lead as she walks toward the door opening it. we walk towards the bar where a very good-looking male is shaking a cocktail and doing fancy flips with his hands. "Lewis, this is Serenna, and she can make cocktails just like you, so you, better up your game." Dalilah laughs as Lewis looks at me in shock horror.
"Oh, hell no, I'm the Tom cruise around here, you can be the Doug, the mastermind behind all the evil we will create." he smiles, and I know I'm going to like him too. he's gorgeous in every way, with mousy brown hair that's long on top and short at the sides, he has tattoos on his arms and the body of a swimmer. but I can also tell that he is very, very gay.
