Chapter One : Sorrow

War. War has always been part of life; it’s that moment when two opposites just can’t take the friction anymore which results into blood spill and death. And in our realm, it is nothing different.

My world does not exist to other realms or I should better state it does not exist on earth. My world is magic. You now the wave your wand type of magic you read in books well we are like that but we don’t use wands or staffs or come to think of it anything except our hands which in my books makes us pretty bad ass. In our world there is still the good and the evil but there is a strong magic line in between that both sides keep forgetting. The Luna. A spell that was casted by ancient wizards to keep the balance, if one of the two oversteps that balance The Luna will restore the order no matter what the cost, or so I was thought by my teachers in primary.

I see we are getting ahead of ourselves here a bit…

Let’s go back to the day it all started.

My mother was one of those people who never stayed in bed late and was always up by the crack of dawn. Unlike me and my twin brother, we loved our sleep but unfortunately we had to go to school. Don’t get me wrong I love school; best part of it is to hang out with my best friend Sebastian. So like any girl ready for the day I came walking down our squeaky brown oak stairs, making my way to the front door. Our house was built out of the finest oak in Camelot, and yes I did just say Camelot. The house was two stories with 4 bedrooms each with our own bathroom. A kitchen the size of a dining hall, since my mom is a paid caterer. Then we have a dining room along with a spectacular lounge which my brother has taken over since we were born, such a weirdo. The door in front of me was dark brown with a clear glass in the middle that you could see out in the entire yard. Opening the door, you could smell the fresh air and feel the cold wind against my face. The wind was light and just breezy enough to move the few strands of blond hair out my face. My hair is always tied back into high pony since my hair isn’t exactly short. Walking down the steps, the fresh air was something that was rare in Camelot. We didn’t have regular wind like they do on earth but we do have some wind now and then. My boots touch the soft grass, hearing the grass being smothered by my feet. I look up at the sky and felt the sun’s heat on my face, making all the cold that was in the house disappear from my features. In moments like these I forget everything around me which can be good and bad in some points. “If you want to sprout wings and fly. Just give me a heads up, will you?” I turn around and standing by the lake bridge was Sebastian, the one and only. Sebastian and I have been friends since we were in kindergarten. A lot of the girls in school swoon over his neatly styled messy brown hair, his light brown eye that reminds me of the mud at the lake. He was always dressed stylish in a way that is showed off his muscles, which he was proud to show off to anyone especially the boys. Yes Sebastian is gay. “Why, you afraid that you might get jealous?”

“Me, not in this lifetime honey. My arms are too big for wings.” He remarked whilst flexing his right bicep.

“What arms? They’re too skinny to even notice” I said trying to keep my laugh in.

“Hurtful!” Sebastian said while placing his left hand over his heart.

After that remark from me we could help but laugh. We made a pack in the beginning of our first day of high school that we will ever lie to one another, always tell the truth no matter what.

“Morning honey. You ready?” Sebastian asked. He always had a nickname for me whether it was sweetie or honey.

“Morning muscles. I should rather ask you that, I am not the one who went out on a disastrous date with the captain of the Lacrosse team” I laughed.

Sebastian walked closer to crossing his arms across his stomach. “We shall not speak of that again”

“It couldn’t have been that bad?”

“It was like taking a straight boy to go look at men’s asses”

I couldn’t help it but I just laughed. That was one genuine laugh, so genuine that my stomach got a cramp from all the laughing.

“We better head to school, and go see your jock boy in action”

“Honey, you are walking on dangerous grounds now”

All Sebastian could do was give me the devil stare that screams, ‘I will bitch slap you woman’. So instead of arguing or commenting I laced my arm through his and we walked towards the bridge talking about all the stuff that has to happen this week since it’s our senior dance on Friday. And that means Sebastian is freaking out and I’m thinking about popcorn I should eat on Friday since I’m not going.

Camelot High. The only high school in Camelot and my second favorite place to be. People in the school think I’m a super nerd for having straight A’s my entire life but that’s not because I study myself to death, it’s because I have a photographic memory. Sebastian and I came walking into the locker garden when everyone usually hangs out before classes starts. The garden consists of one huge room with no roof in the middle giving the Tree of Knowledge a lot of sun. The tree had a curved stump and base that spiraled in a circle almost like a bonsai tree. The tree was placed in the middle of a small fountain that had an endless supply of water thanks to magic. The fountain was a pearl stone that was in the middle of the garden in the form of a circle. The grass grew up to the point and then they spread out just before the roof starts and then the grey stone tiles starts. Around the edge of the garden was the locker that was from the floor to the roof tall and big enough for even me to hide in. My lockers as well as Sebastian’s were next to each other. Coming down the path to our locker I just kept having this strange feeling in my stomach. As if something isn’t felling right within my body. Shaking the feeling out my head, I walked alongside Sebastian to our lockers. My arm still interlocked with his, I could feel the fabric of his blue cotton button up shirt. The sleeves were rolled up to just above the elbow so that his biceps look even bigger. His black jeans and black pointy shoes made him look perfect every day. I on the other hand dressed just to be comfortable. Wearing a black leather jacket that clung tightly to my grey cotton tank top and went well with my black boots and dark blue jeans that had a tear on each knee. If I let Sebastian loose in my closet I will look like a fashion model because he hates all my clothes and would love to burn all of them. When we reach our lockers, Sebastian heads to his and I go to mine. Reaching for the knob I turn it slightly, typing the number 8-15-35. When my locker opens a sudden note falls out. I reach down to pick up the small brown paper that fell from my locker.

“Secret admirer?” Sebastian asked while only his eyes visible.

“It’s probably the wrong locker”

“Who cares? Open it!”

I slowly opened the small brown note and suddenly felt my whole skip a beat. The note is from Eric. The most popular and hottest guy in school, even Sebastian is after him. You can’t miss him. Those blue eyes that make the blue of the ocean seem pale in comparison. The gold of his hair that’s make everything around seem like a fortune. The smile that could a whole village drop to their knees and let’s not talk about the body and chiseled face. I slowly read the note again:

Dear Kat

Please allow me the honor of having you as my

Date for the senior dance this Friday.

Awaiting your answer in History.

Eric

All I could do that moment was pretend not to squeal or try not to faint. The hottest and most popular guy asked me out to the dance. This must be some kind of joke right. No way is he interested in me, I mean his ex is the cheerleading captain and he is the football captain. And me well I’m Katherine Hubs. The dorky girl.

History class is my favorite above all my others. I love knowledge and passion that history has, and Miss Burge understands that passion. The class was quiet big. There was about dirty seven students in this class. Minus me and Sebastian in the class there was a few other people I know of. Al and his girlfriend Jenny, the cheerleading squad (Meg, Marley, Miranda, Michelle) which you really couldn’t miss. Then there was Eric and then my brother Jacob and his bitch of a girlfriend Valerie. Yes I do not like my twin brother’s girlfriend. Walking up the oak stairs that was covered with maroon carpet that lead up to the back giving each student a chance to go to their seats. My seat was just like everyone else’s. Maroon seats, with an oak table in front of them. Mine was in the middle of the class in the first row. As we started taking our seats, me in my spot, Sebastian on my right, the rest everywhere else. I was seated, in the progress of taking out my books when a voice calls me to attention. The voice was so soft and touching as if the person was sinning to me.

“In front again I see?”

I turn around and when my eyes saw who was standing next to me it was as if my heart just almost completely stood still. Eric Haven was standing next to me. Looking down on me with those perfect blue eyes.

“Uhm. Hi Eric.” Turning back to my bag, hiding away my shyness and red cheeks from blushing.

“Mind if I join you up front today?” Yip! I think I just had a heart attack. I had to hold myself in from screaming at the top of my lungs, ‘hell yes’.

“Sure, if you want to” I said as I hid a hair behind my ear and repositioned myself right in the chair so I was staring to the teachers desk again. Eric slowly takes a seat next to me. He was wearing a plain black t-shirt, blue jeans and black high tops. Around his neck was silver cross necklace that hung nicely against his perfect body that you could see every detail through his clothes. As my eyes were glued to the front waiting for Miss Burge to come in but without a second passing Eric slowly slid closer to me.

“So did you get my note?” He whispered into my ear.

“Did you really send it or is it a joke?” I asked

Instead of answering he just started to laugh. You could see he meant it by the way his whole body was shaking.

“I haven’t laughed like that in a long time.”

“Glad I could make you laugh, I’m usually a very dull person”

“I wouldn’t say that.”

I turn to look at him, smiling like a crazy person but all I can see is the blue of his and his chiseled features. I wanted so badly to answer him on the note, it felt like it wanted to jump out my throat and scream but sadly I was interrupted by Miss Burge.

Miss Burge was a very upbeat teacher. She never let anyone get her down, always smiling, cheerful. She had brown hair that was always perfectly curled to the length of her shoulder, her silver blue eyes always made everyone want to smile. Today she was dressed in a small grey dress suit with a white button up shirt under the jacket. Around her neck was a string of white pearls as well as around her right arm. She was elegant when it came to walking as if she was floating on air. When she spoke it was like as if everything just started to calm down and we all could pay attention.

“Good morning class.”

“Good morning Miss Burge” We all said in sync.

“Today I thought we could back to where we all started the war of Magic. As you all know that since the beginning of time there has been a war between good and evil. A war that no one could’ve won without losing something dearly.” Miss Burge walks to the front of desks and turns to the rest of the class.

“During that war, the forces of evil came and vowed to destroy Camelot. Though they forgot that even in the darkest of times, there will always be light. Hope.”

“O please” a voice from the back spoke.

Miss Burge stopped and turned her attention to the back of the class. I turned around to see who it was, but in my heart I already knew. Jacob. Jacob was sitting in the back with his feet up against the empty chair in front of him. Everyone turned to watch my brother who in return probably stared in return with his blue eyes. He colored his blond hair black which I had to admit made him a bit better looking. My brother was also well built but not like Eric was. He was always dressed in black. Black shirt, black jeans and black boots. Peeking out from under his shirt on his right bicep was an indicator of a snake tattoo.

“You have something to say Jacob?” Miss Burge asked.

“No matter what you do, there will always be death and evil. It’s just a matter of time before it takes the light over.”

Before I could even stop myself, I heard myself spoke.

“How can you say that?”

“Easy. Death and darkness is coming for all of us it’s just a matter of time before it catches you”

“What is wrong with you? How can you say that? No one deserves to die, not now not ever.”

“O shut the f.”

“Jacob!” Miss Burge interrupted him.

My own brother talking like that, to me. What was happening to him? I don’t know him like this. I wanted to say something but I could only feel the tears build up inside of me so instead I grabbed my bag, climbed over Eric and ran out the door. Trying to hold in my tears.
