Short Story

In the heart of the university campus, Alex, a sophomore burdened with the weight of both textbooks and the unrelenting bullying he endured, found solace in the library’s ancient embrace. He was a quiet and studious boy who often sought refuge from the daily torment of bullies. His footsteps soft and contemplative, as if trying to remain invisible, his eyes perpetually cast downward. The library, with its hushed atmosphere, became his sanctuary, cocooned within the ivory walls.

The silent realm where whispers of knowledge and the aroma of aged paper danced together, weaving a spell that transported all who entered. Rows of bookshelves stood like towering sentinels; their spines laden with the wisdom of centuries.

Alex would lose himself in the languid world of the library. The soft, rhythmic hum of turning pages reverberated through the air, like a soothing lullaby. It was a place where the outside world seemed a distant dream, where the cacophony of laughter and jeers that plagued his days surrendered to the library’s murmured whispers.

Clacking of keyboards as fingers danced on computers blended with the soft scooting of chairs. If he listened hard enough, he could hear fingers tapping on tablets and smartphones, an occasional pen on paper as notes were jotted. It was classical music to his ears. Each step he took across the library’s tiled floors seemed to resonate with a modern acoustic.

As he ventured further into the aisles, the library’s embrace grew tighter, a warm grip that promised refuge. Fluorescent light sent a cool, machine hum to illuminate shadows. The air conditioning was set as low as a butcher’s freezer, causing his air to be seen with every breath he took. The only warmth was within the books and by the window’s pooling sunlight.

He would sit at a table alone, as his fingers traced the cracked spines of the old books, forging connections with authors long gone, their wisdom etched in fading ink. Here, the library was not just a place; it was a living, breathing entity. It was a mosaic of emotions, a tapestry of solitude and introspection, a realm where the walls absorbed the words and echoes of despair, replacing them with the tranquil cadence of thought and imagination.

Over the semester, Alex couldn’t help but notice a junior named Sarah, who was always helping fellow students with their coursework. She seemed to like academic challenges and had an aura of authenticity and openness that drew Alex towards her. He was a loner because of his anxiety and low self-esteem.

He tried to break from his shell. One chilly evening, Alex was engrossed in his studies. Alex decided to approach Sarah and strike up a conversation as the library’s closing time drew near.

“Uh, Hi.” Alex can’t stop himself from admiring Sarah. His heart, pounding like a drum in his chest, slowly approached her. He’d watched her as she led the study group, and how she was the embodiment of charisma and grace. Sarah’s presence made her the gravitational center of the room. Her warm, dulcet voice effortlessly drew people in.

As she was wrapping up her group session and gathering her items, she heard Alex approach. Her eyes inventoried him as he stood at the corner of the table. She silently appraised him. Alex’s nervousness welled up, and as he gathered the courage to speak. “Hey, um, hi,” he stammered, his voice barely above a whisper. “I couldn’t help but notice you’re always here, helping others with their studies.”

The library’s silence was interrupted only by the occasional shuffle of papers, the sighs of students engrossed in their studies, and the distant hum of fluorescent lights. The dusty bookshelves loomed like ancient guardians of knowledge, standing sentinel in the dimly lit space.

Sarah smiled, her eyes crinkling at the corners with genuine warmth. “Oh, hey there! Yeah, I guess I spend a lot of time here. I just like helping people, you know? And this place, it’s like my second home. I’m Sarah, by the way.” Her heart drummed in her chest. For an odd reason, her well-reserved-self melted instantly as her eyes caught Alex’s.

Alex’s heart fluttered at her friendly response. “I’m Alex,” he said, a shy smile tugging at the corners of his lips. “I, uh, well, I like to come here to escape from some... stuff. You know, it’s my safe space.”

Sarah’s eyes sparkled with understanding. “I get it, Alex. Things are a rollercoaster. But you’re not alone. We all have our struggles, and we all have our stories. Reading and learning about the world helps me keep everything in perspective.”

“Really?” Alex’s eyes widened. “You love reading too? That’s amazing. It’s like you’re in my head. I feel the same way about books. They’re like a lifeline, a way to escape into different worlds.” He felt an ease talking with her. “I couldn’t but wonder if you would like to show me your tips and hacks to being so intelligent with these uni classes.”

Sarah chuckled, her laughter like a delicate breeze. “See? We have more in common than you thought, Alex. You’d be surprised at how many unique ideas you can find in the pages of a good book. And hey, the library closes soon. Want to walk me to my dorm?”

The offer caught Alex off guard, and he could hardly contain his excitement. “I’d love to, Sarah.”

As they exited the library, the night enveloped them, casting a warm, inky darkness over the campus. Their voices floated through the quiet night. As Alex and Sarah walked across campus towards the female-only dorm, the pathway lights and large red emergency call buttons were a safety net. Alex hesitated for a moment before breaking the silence.

“How long have you been going here?” He shifted his backpack as he kept pace with her stride. “You seem to know everyone in the library. How did you get to be so friendly with everyone?”

Sarah smiled warmly. “Oh, I don’t know about everyone, Alex. I guess I enjoy connecting with people and helping when I can. It’s a great way to make friends, you know?” Her eyes sparkled like the stars above them in the crisp air.

“Yeah, it’s pretty amazing how you can just strike up conversations with anyone. I’m not that good at it.” He dropped his chin as he admitted what he thought was a flaw in himself to a stranger.

Sarah felt a little bothered at his self-depreciation. “You’re doing just fine, Alex. You are talking with me. That’s a lot, and that’s what matters most. And, well, it’s not always easy for me either. I’m naturally a bit reserved, to be honest.”

“Really? You hide it so well. I guess I never would have known.” Alex looked at Sarah. She kept her focus on the pathway stones as they walked.

She chuckled as her ease felt natural. “I’ve been practicing for a while. I used to be even shyer, and I’ve learned that sometimes being friendly can help you overcome those insecurities.”

“I see what you mean. I’m not the most confident person either. That’s probably why I enjoy talking to you. It’s just... comfortable.”

Her voice lifted gratefully, “I’m glad to hear that, Alex. Sometimes it’s nice to have someone you can be yourself with, no pressure.”

“Definitely. So, what do you like to do when you’re not at the library?”

Her finger tapped her cheek thoughtfully, “Well, I love to read, of course. And I enjoy exploring the city. There’s so much to see and do. But, honestly, I spend a lot of my free time with my roommates. We’re a pretty close-knit group, and they’re like family to me.”

“That sounds nice. I’ve always wanted to explore the city more, but I never got the chance.”

“Maybe we could explore together sometime. I know some great places that you might like.”

“That would be amazing, Sarah. I’d love that.” He chuckled as a thought hit him. “I forgot to ask. What is your major in?”

“Oh, I always wanted to be a surgeon. But my hands are not steady enough. So, I’m in bio-med. What about you?”

“I’m studying structural engineering. Funny thing is, I’m horrible at math.”

The two laugh at his reply. In a minute, they arrived at the dorm. Sarah peeked at her reflection in the window.

“Don’t stress it, Sarah. You look good for a long day.”

“Oh, I’m not insecure or checking my teeth.” Her voice tilted as she felt humorous. “I’m secretly vain, thank you though.”

Alex laughed as if he was in a comedy club. She had made him feel so at ease, and he liked her sense of humor. Sarah pulled out her pink proximity card and tapped it on the card reader. A soft electronic click indicated the door was unlocked.

“Well, Sarah. Thank you for taking your time to chat with me. I hope to see you around.”

“Me too, Alex. Thanks for walking me back. If you see me in the library again, I’ll have some ideas to go in the city.”

“That would be fantastic. Have a good night, Sarah.”

“You have a good night too, Alex.”

He made sure she went inside safely, then made his way back to his own dorm.

A few days had passed when Alex had walked Sarah to her dorm. He had replayed the conversation in his mind a dozen times, the warm bond they had formed during their stroll across campus and her friendly demeanor. He found her friendliness refreshing and down-to-earth.

Now, Alex found himself drawn to the familiar rows of books and quiet sanctuary. As he scanned the library, his heart quickened when he spotted Sarah. She was alone, her presence commanding even with noise-canceling headphones wrapped around her ears. Her knees were tucked comfortably underneath her as she sunk into her own world.

Alex approached her, unsure of how to break her concentration. He shuffled closer, he noticed her focus on her study materials. Her face wore an expression of immersion in her work. Alex stood there for a moment, not wanting to disturb her.

After a moment, he decided to gently tap her shoulder to get her attention. Her body language changed as she felt the tap, her brows furrowing in momentary surprise. Alex’s gentle tap on Sarah’s shoulder drew her away from the world of words and numbers she’d been engrossed in. She pulled her noise-canceling headphones off her ears, revealing a brief flicker of surprise in her eyes before a friendly smile took its place. Alex stood there with a warm, almost sheepish smile.

“Sorry to bother you, Sarah. I saw you here and wanted to say hello.”

Her grin melted his nervousness. “Hey Alex! Fancy seeing you here again. Did you come to explore the world of books with me?”

Alex nodded, feeling a sense of déjà vu from their previous encounter. “Yeah, I enjoyed before.”

“Well, my mind is a bit mushy from studying. I need a break.”

“Oh? Well, you mentioned you liked to read. Anything not related to classes?”

With a shift of her weight, she leaned forward slightly, releasing her legs from their comfortable perch. Her hands steadied herself on the armrests as she rose from the chair. Her movements were fluid, like a dancer gracefully transitioning from one position to the next.

The chair’s cushion retained the gentle indentation of her form as she stood. Sarah’s body language spoke of her readiness to embark on this new adventure with Alex. She gracefully transitioned to a standing position.

“Hell yeah. Luckily a few are here.” They strolled down the dimly lit library aisles. Sarah’s eyes sparkled with a passion for reading, her fingers tracing the spines of her favorite books. She pulled out a weathered, leather-bound volume, and her eyes lit up. “This one, Alex, is an absolute gem. It’s like entering a new universe every time I open it. The author has a way of making words come alive.”

“Better than a Kindle?”

“Absolutely. There’s a sensory experience you don’t get in a screen. A tangible presence with seeing notes in the margins, seeing other people’s thoughts as my fingers rustle the pages.”

“Plus, they are great for holding my wobbly desk.”

Sarah chuckled at his joke. “Or smashing a mosquito.”

Alex smiled at her humor. He was eager to share in her excitement, watched as she held the book close to her chest, her body language brimming with admiration. He couldn’t help but feel his heart race as they shared their love for literature and explored the enchanting world of the library together.

As they spoke that night, the librarians began to usher everyone out, missing the two friends. Time slipped away, and before they knew it, the library had closed for the night. The pair, deep in conversation, had lost track of time again. As they sought a way out, the world of books and silent aisles seemed to change around them. They realized the library doors had been locked. They began to search for an exit. With furrowed brows eyes, they stumbled upon a hidden door. It was as if the room had appeared out of nowhere, tucked away in a corner they had never seen before.

“Have you seen this before?” Alex asked of her.

“No. Not even once.” Sarah stared at the inconspicuous door in a corner of the library.

“It must be old. I mean a wooden door with a black metal knob?”

“It looks older than the wall around it. It’s not even painted the same color.”

“What’s that engraved on the knob?”

Sarah knelt and peeked in the low light coming from the outside hallway. “It looks like a window.”

“A window etched on a doorknob?”

“Yeah.” She came back to her feet. “Weird.”

“It’s interesting, but let’s not try the most interesting thing on campus.”

“Yeah. A nope is at the back of my throat.”

“Nope to the serpent in our ear saying open it.”

Confused, they inquired with librarians and other students the next day, but no one seemed to have any knowledge of the door’s existence. The mystery only deepened their curiosity, and they couldn’t resist the temptation to find out what was behind it.

Two nights later, Alex and Sarah returned to the library, armed with backpacks filled with flashlights, a taser, pepper spray, and emergency kits. To their amazement, the door was still there, and it was unlocked. Nervously, they decided to postpone their exploration for a week.

“How is it no one knows about that door?” Alex asked Sarah as they sat at the café.

“Better question is how is it only you and I seem to see it?” Sarah’s eyebrows tightened as she thought about the enigma. “Part me says leave it alone.”

“But the other part is curious.” Alex caught Sarah’s eyes. “Like a horror movie, this is a bad idea.”

“Maybe.”

When night arrived, the door was unlocked, just as before, and they steeled themselves to open it. Alex turned the heavy knob, and with bated breath, they crossed the threshold and found themselves in a room with a translucent wall. They slipped past the threshold and stopped as they saw a chain dangling from above. Sarah grabbed it and pulled. Their surroundings were instantly illuminated with a cream light.

Deep plush chairs stood on a small, dusty platform. To their left was a rickety spiral staircase made of red oak and black iron. The feeble illumination cast a strange quality to the room.

Alex made his way to the banister that ran from the base of the stairs. He peered over the railing to see over it. The base of the staircase vanished into a dark void of nothing.

“Maybe we should turn back.” Alex said as he took in the wallpaper painted walls, except for the one that remained transparent. They could see the outside library as if this was a two-way mirror.

Curiosity got the better of them, and they sat down in the chairs. As they did, the world around them began to shift and warp. They found themselves in another dimension, a world unlike anything they had ever seen. Strangely beautiful, it was a place filled with wondrous sights and sounds.

“Is this Narnia?” Alex asked. Sarah shook her head.

They explored this alternate reality, their minds filled with wonder and amazement. But as they wandered through the surreal landscapes, they couldn’t help but feel a growing sense of unease. Time seemed to move differently here, and as they eventually returned to the library, they realized they had been gone for only one night.

Back in their familiar world, they were left with more questions than answers. The mysterious room left them both in awe and in disbelief. Alex and Sarah decided to keep their secret, a bond forged in the depths of the library, and continued to explore the world of academia and friendship, forever changed by their otherworldly adventure.
