Chapter 1
Elle navigated the crowded mall with her senses on high alert. The cacophony of chatter, footsteps, and laughter swirled around her, creating an electric atmosphere. Amidst the chaos, her gaze landed on a man who stood out like a breath of fresh air.
His rugged look - beard, tattoos peeking out from under his shirt, and an undercut with a bun - gave him an air of mystery. As she walked by, their eyes met, leaving her with a spark of curiosity. His piercing brown eyes seemed to hold a secret, drawing her in.
As she continued shopping, she couldn’t shake the feeling that someone was watching her. Every time she left a store, her gaze drifted back to the mysterious man. He was a steady presence, always there, and following her, a constant in the ever-changing crowd. Her stomach twisted with confusion as she tried to understand why this stranger seemed so fixated on her. Questions swirled in her mind, each one a piece of a puzzle she was desperate to solve.
Elle tried to shake off the weird vibes and focus on her shopping. But deep down, she couldn’t help feeling intrigued.
As she walked out of the last store, the air felt charged. Suddenly, there he was, right in front of her. Her heart skipped a beat, and she froze, totally caught off guard by his sudden appearance.
His question hung in the air, leaving Elle stunned. “Who are you? Where am I?” The words echoed in her mind, stirring up a mix of emotions she couldn’t untangle.
For a moment, time seemed to stand still. Elle’s eyes locked with his, and the silence between them said more than words ever could, a silent exchange that spoke volumes.
For a split second, everything else disappeared. It was just them, caught in this weird, electric moment. Elle felt a strange sense of déjà vu like she’d known this guy forever, even though they’d never met.
It didn’t make any sense, but something about him felt familiar, like a song she couldn’t quite remember. But just as she wanted to say something, somebody called her name...
“Elle!”
As she slowly emerged from the depths of unconsciousness, a disorienting haze enveloped her senses, blurring the boundaries between wakefulness and the remnants of a fractured dream. Someone was calling her name, dragging her back to reality.
“Elle! Elle! Can you hear me?”
The voice sounded panicked, forcing her to open her eyes. Big mistake - the light hit her like a truck, and her head throbbed. Everything was a blur, and she couldn’t make sense of where she was or what was happening.
“Elle! Oh my God, hey, how are you?”
She forced herself to focus again, but everything was still blurry. The room spun around her, a jumbled mess that slowly came together. She realized she was in a hospital room. Someone was sitting in front of her, but their face was fuzzy, making it impossible to tell who it was.
“Elle, dear, we’ve been so worried.”
The voice cut through the haze, and Elle’s mom came into focus. She was a familiar face in this sea of confusion, and her presence made Elle feel a little better.
As her mom leaned in, worry lines etched on her face, Elle tried to speak, but her throat was parched. “Mom?” her voice emerged as a hoarse whisper.
“I’m here, dear, I’m here,” her mother murmured. “Rest, everything will be fine. You’re safe. You did it.”
Overwhelmed by a surge of emotion, exhaustion took over. Her eyelids drooped, and she let herself drift off to sleep.
When Elle opened her eyes again, the light wasn’t as harsh. The hospital room was bathed in a softer glow. The smell of antiseptic still lingered, but it was mixed with the sweet scent of flowers from a bouquet on her bedside table. The room was calm, with pale blue walls and sunlight peeking through the curtains, creating soft patterns on the floor.
Her best friend Paula sat beside the bed, her fingers flying across her phone screen. Elle tried to sit up, and a sharp pain shot through her head, making her gasp softly. She froze, unable to move.
Paula swiftly abandoned her phone, her eyes brimming with concern as she leaped to her feet. “Hey, sweetie,” she said. “How are you?”
“What... What happened?” Elle asked, her voice a fragile whisper.
“Sweetie, you... you’ve had an accident. You were... knocked out for a few days. It was touch and go for a while, but you’re proving to be stronger than you realize,” Paul explained, a soft chuckle escaping her lips as she gently clasped her friend’s hand. “Everything will be okay, but... you need to take it easy. You have a concussion.”
“What... what accident?”
Once again, Paula hesitated, her movements bringing her closer. “Listen, Elle, you... you were driving, and at the intersection behind Lexington, another car collided head-on with yours, and then... your car crashed into another car,” she murmured, her gaze fixed on their hands. “There was... ice on the road, the driver lost control and... ”
“What day... is it today?”
“Tuesday. But... you’ve been out for a while. Eighteen days, to be exact.” Paula met Elle’s gaze directly for the first time, her blue eyes not able to hide the worry. “Elle, there’s something else, but... I... I don’t know...”
“What... is it?”
Her grip tightened around Elle’s hand, hesitation palpable. “Wouldn’t it be better for the doctor to explain?” she suggested, but Elle shook her head, triggering another wave of excruciating pain. “Okay,” Paula continued. “In the accident... you were... trapped in your car. When you arrived at the hospital, you... you were... gone. And... your leg... it...” her voice trailed off, her gaze falling to the covers, where a devastating truth lay shrouded beneath.
Elle immediately sensed that something was amiss. Ignoring the roaring headache, she reached down and tugged at the blanket, only to discover the full extent of her injury: her right leg was amputated just above the knee, the stump swathed in thick bandages.
“No,” she uttered, her pulse quickening, the frantic beeping of the machines confirming her rising panic. “No, no, no, no, NO!”
Paula leaped to her feet and flung the door open, urgently calling for a nurse who swiftly entered the room, a syringe in hand. The last thing Elle glimpsed was her friend’s anxious expression before everything faded into darkness once more.
She floated effortlessly, warmed by the sun and the gentle river water. She felt completely safe and at peace. As she looked calmly at the riverbank, the beauty of nature unfolded before her. Ducks were hidden among the reeds, searching for food with smooth, purposeful movements. When she looked up, she saw pink clouds drifting lazily across the sky, their gentle dance captivating her.
To her right, a lush wall of trees lined the riverbank, their tall forms dominating the serene scene. Tall firs stood proudly, their green branches swaying in the breeze, while a single chestnut tree added a rustic touch to the perfect view.
Elle spotted a guy on the riverbank, standing among the trees with his back to the water. He looked tense, scanning the trees like he was searching for something. She felt a sudden urge to call out to him, but before she could, a sharp pain gripped her throat, choking her silent.
As she struggled with the pain, a creepy feeling washed over her. The peaceful scene around her started to feel off like reality was warping. Panicking, Elle clawed at her throat, her eyes wide with fear and confusion.
Suddenly, as she still tried to figure out what was happening, she heard a low rumble in the distance, getting louder every second. Panic hit her, and she started thrashing around, trying to swim to shore. But her right leg wouldn’t move, leaving her left leg kicking uselessly. Terror shot through her, and she gasped.
She let out a scream that echoed across the river. In that heart-stopping moment, the man on the riverbank turned to face her. Their eyes met for a split second before she was swallowed up by the roaring waterfall, plunging into the churning water below.
