Chapter One : The Nightmares

In the shrouded gloom, young Jason hastily packed up his eleven years of existence, compelled to accompany his family on a cross-country journey to the enigmatic and hushed town of Hawkins. Peering out from the window of his father’s worn, rusted 1962 station wagon, Jason observed the raindrops on the window, each one a portentous omen, meeting them on the desolate road to their new, mysterious destination.

His parents attempted to lighten the oppressive atmosphere with trivial chatter about the town’s virtues, yet the looming malevolence ahead eluded any attempt at dispelling the ominous aura. A faint backfire and an eerie cloud of black smoke accompanied their entry into Hawkins. The family halted at a local filling garage for final directions, and as Jason accompanied his father, the cashier’s face turned pallid with despair and fear upon hearing their destination. The hesitant warning from the gentleman lingered, cut short by a forceful departure, leaving an unsettling impression in Jason’s mind.

The road to the house grew quieter, colder, and darker, as if all joy had evaporated from this once idyllic American town. Upon arrival, Jason’s gaze froze in disbelief at the fence adorned with warning signs from town residents. The cashier’s haunted expression replayed in his mind, but his father dismissed it as mere mischief of adventurous children, oblivious to the possibility of a deeper malevolence.

As Jason stepped out of the vehicle, a chilling atmosphere enveloped him, and an uncomfortable feeling of being watched emanated from the vacant windows of the second-floor bedrooms. The newly painted walls masked a dark history, and as he ascended the wooden staircase, he unwittingly traversed the malevolent path where lost souls had once been tormented.

Later that night, while unpacking in his room, Jason detected an anomaly in the floor on his way to the closet. Investigating with cautious curiosity, he found a hollow echo beneath the floorboards. Armed with a screwdriver from his father’s toolbox, Jason unraveled the mystery, revealing an ancient baseball glove and a photo hidden below. The inscription at the back read “1903 - Ross family of Hawkins,” but the grim countenances in the photo spoke of suffering and terror.

Lost in the haunting image, Jason was startled by his mother’s call to dinner as he appeared by the bedroom door. Swiftly concealing the photo under a book on his desk, he feigned excitement about their move, hoping to divert his mother’s attention from the unsettling discovery and the concealed cavity in his bedroom floor. With forced enthusiasm, he embraced his mother, leading her away from the ominous secrets hidden in the shadows of their new home.
