One.
Hi! My name is Kendra Simmons, I'm 23 years old and I've been in college for 2 years. Tomorrow, I start my third year. My mother wanted me to go to college and become a successful doctor, and my father on the other hand wants me to become a lawyer. What they didn't know was that I have a passion for music. The way the melodies, strings, and bass of a song hits, makes me feel things I cannot explain. On top of that, the lyrics an artist decides to write over them makes a huge difference.
As I was waiting in line to collect my class schedule and a key to my new dorm room, I grew hungry and eager to hurry and get some food before the food court closes.
"NEXT!" a loud booming voice yelled from the stand in front of me which caused me to come back from my thoughts and walk up to the table.
"Please state your first and last name along with the last four digits of your student ID number." The woman said as she looked up at me with a pen in her hand and a clipboard with a bunch of papers attached to it.
"Kendra Simmons, 8543" I replied as I pushed a strand of hair behind my ear and chewed on my bottom lip nervously. I watched her flip through the stack of papers and scan for my name with her pen and checked it off as she then proceeded to hand me my new backpack with my school supplies in it along with my schedule, university hoodie, some pens, pencils, paper, and a new computer. I even received a briefcase with a violin in it and a lanyard with a key card to my dorm room.
"Your dorm is on the third floor to your right, room 455." She replied as she then went back to her work and called the next person up. I grabbed my belongings and headed over to the elevator and pressed the button to go up and waited for it to open. The elevator soon dinged and soon, I was inside and pressed the button to the third floor and watched as the doors closed.
The elevator jolted a bit as it moved up, passing the second floor and arriving to the third floor and opened up to reveal a few people waiting to get on the elevator to go down. We exchanged smiles and hellos before going our separate ways and eventually I reached my destination, scanning the keycard and opened the door to a dark room. I turned the light on and saw a dull looking dorm with white walls, tiny brown couch, small tv stand and a wooden rectangle coffee table. The atmosphere of this room felt off and I knew I needed to somehow decorate this room the way I want it. Luckily I still had all of my decor, furniture and clothes in my old dorm waiting for me to move everything out and into its new place.
I placed my things next to the front door and scanned the room as to where I wanted to start the renovation and I began by removing the old furniture, scrubbing and cleaning the walls and floors and then took the time to go back and forth between the first and third floor bringing all my stuff into the hallway and put everything together to my liking. It really started to feel like home now and what I didn't realize was that it was dark out and the cafeteria closed for the night which means I missed lunch and dinner. I scrolled through my phone and pulled up DoorDash and ordered a meal from Chipotle that would originally cost me $15 but I'm paying $25 for one bowl and a side of chips which I think is blasphemy.
I placed my order along with a tip and entered my room, picking out a pajama set and headed for the shower to get ready and relax for the rest of the night. As I finished up getting dressed and lotioning my body, a knock was heard outside of my door and I quickly went over to open it to see a man with my order in his hand and a smile. "Here you go ma'am." He replied.
"Thank you so much!" I exclaimed as I grabbed it from him and we exchanged "goodnights" to each other. I sat down at the island in the kitchen and ate my food then cleaned up and headed to bed afterwards.
The next morning, I woke up and stretched and looked out the window. The sun was already up and shining through the trees. I got up and went to the bathroom to freshen up and brush my teeth. Afterwards I got my backpack and put my notebooks and other supplies in it, and got myself dressed. I took a look at myself in the mirror and quickly fixed my hair.
"Okay, you can do this." I thought to myself. "You are a junior in college. You are gonna make it!"
I smiled and then grabbed my backpack, and turned around and walked out of my dorm, closing the door behind me. I quickly walked through the halls and to the cafeteria to get some breakfast. After getting my food, I walked out of the dorms and across the campus grounds to get to my first class.
"Oh my god! Kendra?!"
I turned around at the sound of that all too familiar voice and a grin broke across my face. Tia ran into my arms and hugged me tight, laughing with joy. "Tia! I missed your crazy ass!"
"You know we were talking on the phone two days ago." Tia said as she locked her arm around mine.
"Yeah but you know what I mean!" I laughed as we started to walk into one of the classroom buildings arm in arm.
"So what did you do this summer?" Tia asked.
"Well, I went on that white water rafting trip I told you about. Best weekend ever, by the way." I said, weaving through the wave of students in the halls. "My brother wiped out from his raft and we all laughed.
"Oh wow that must've been a riot." Tia laughed.
"Yeah, but he was a good sport about it." I said, and then I stopped as I saw a handsome man standing in the doorway of one of the classrooms. His hair was done with one curl in between his eyes, and he had the most refined jawline I've ever seen on a human being. He was tall and slender, and he was the most handsome man I had ever seen in my entire life. Tia was telling me something, but I wasn't paying attention. This man was so fine it was unreal.
"Girl who is that?" I asked as soon as we were out of his listening range.
Tia looked back at the man and smirked. "Oh that's Mr. Jackson, the music teacher." she said.
"That's gonna be my music teacher?" I thought to myself. "Oh my god yes God is good!"
"Girl, I think he's gonna be my favorite professor already, he is so fine!" I squealed, and Tia hugged me as we made our way to class. There's a lot of things that I wish for in life. Looks like another wish has been granted for me.
