Summary

Do you feel like you can keep a secret? From everyone? From your closest friends? Even if you knew that the information you hold could shatter their world? The afterschool society called 'The Keepers' is a select group of individuals that can be found in the dusty abandoned room of the library; these keepers are there for every student to visit so that they can vent their burdens, secrets, or darkest desires without the stress of talking to a counselor. These keepers keep their identity hidden; although they are known to be a part of the student body, and while no one but the High Keeper knows the official number of keepers there is suspected to be a dozen. Follow the story of Asteria Ford, a Keeper, as she absorbs all the secrets of her peers and watch as the pressure begins to weigh on her. Follow as she begins to break as the stress of the secrets begins to tear her limb from limb, as her secret identity takes hold of her as she begins an affair with another Keeper.

Rules of Your Mind

(Recommended reading in dark mode for ambiance)

Asteria was a junior in college studying Forensics at the richest University in the nation, most of the student body paid their way - or ran - their way into being enrolled with her peers being unbelievably rich beyond her imagination.

She, on the other hand, was at the top of her high school and graduated with all of her college basics so she was able to enroll with her G.P.A alone which averaged around 4.3; unfortunately, her family did not have the money that would allow her to blend at her school with her 20-year-old Kia that was so sun-baked that the paint chipped and what was left of the once dark green color was now a faded moss.

Her assigned parking spot which she paid an outrageous amount of money for was right between a sleek matte black Corvette and a metallic purple-blue Ford GT. There have been multiple occasions where she’d spot people taking pictures of her car as they laughed with their groupies and she would hide around a corner and wait for them to be out of earshot before she’d quickly throw herself into the car with her hood up and sunglasses on.

While all of her friends know that she does not have money, she would prefer to keep that on the down low considering how much money means to everyone here. Not even just to her peers, but to the teachers and school board as well; it meant everything to everyone. Asteria was just waiting for the day that they would stop accepting applications from anyone who was not a child of an alumnus or filthy rich.

Wanting to keep her lack of wealth from everyone was not just about the judgment; it was about the afterschool club she hosted that got unbelievably popular very quickly. It was something she started to keep her occupied and to alleviate stress from those who didn’t feel comfortable talking to the councilors that the university provided due to the power imbalance.

Asteria was the High Keeper of the Secret Keeper Society, although it was not much of a secret anymore considering the whole school was aware of it and where to find a Keeper when they needed one, as well as the whole school board being well aware of the Secret Keeper Society and everything they did with the extra room in the library’s basement; and at first they hated everything the society stood for and tried multiple times to shut it down until they took surveys and found that the students who regularly saw Keepers did 33-90% better on exams and just class in general.

She was also the only Keeper who knew the official number of Keepers there were, which was ten, but even she did not know the identities of her other Keepers. The process of getting her other Keepers was very difficult and complicated and consisted of multiple recruitment of her peers dressed in black pants, black hoodies, and black masks; and she was completely unprepared to interview the thousands of people that showed.

Many people claim to be Keepers, far more than ten and there have only been eleven Keepers one of which only left due to graduating, and even then, Asteria did not know who that graduating Keeper was even though she wanted to; though to be a Keeper, you must be very good at not only keeping your secrets, but everyone else’s.

Those who boast about being Keepers are labeled “Tellers”, “Loose-Lippers”, and “Blabbers”. Her personal favorite was Blabbers.

The complexity of the Secret Keeper Society grows more and more due to preserving, well, secrets and how nosey everyone tries to be. At first, the Secret Keeper Society’s room could only be accessed by the librarian but due to Keepers being requested for after-school activities and between exams every Keeper eventually got a key to the basement room along with the private bathrooms in the library to change.

Whenever a Keeper is available the basement door will be open with the Keeper sitting at a table in the center of the room lit only by candles when a Keeper session is in the door will be closed with the sign flipped to “In Session” and one could either put their name down to be put in queue, they could try to catch the Keeper out of session to remain anonymous, or they could send an anonymous email from the library computer to the Secret Keeper Society of which Asteria runs.

From there either Asteria herself will take the session or she will email one of her Keepers via the private email she set up for them to see who could be the next available Keeper. She also set up private and secure phone numbers that are randomly generated for a Keeper group chat if she needs to quickly contact a Keeper.

You will not believe how much effort and time went into this for something she was not even paid for, between the Keeper Society, school, and her job it was very rare to get a session with the High Keeper; and if one did, it was based on pure luck.

The complexity of the Secret Keeper Society could stretch for pages, but enough about the Keepers -for now.

Asteria was rushing to try to get to the intersection after school to try to not only make it to work on time but to see Damond Mundell in his beautiful green Porsche 911, but to be fair; Damond himself was beautiful with his striking silver eyes, ebony black strands that curled around his ears and facial features sculpted from the Greek myths. He was a refreshing sight even at a glimpse after a long day.

Damond was heir to his father’s packing company but he was going to school for Federal Investigation, which luckily for Asteria meant they had two classes together “Basic Criminal Investigation”, and “Crime Scene Investigation”. Along with that, he played for the basketball and track team his long legs not only propelling his athletic career, but his love life as well since he was on his second girlfriend this semester.

While she did not consider herself attractive, she was not nearly close enough to even touch the league of girls that Damond kept around him. From literal Vouge models to the best-looking women around the university, while her golden blonde hair and sea-glass blue eyes had plenty of men trying to take her out; it was not enough to get the attention of Damond Mundell.

Though it would not stop her daydreaming about his strong hands around her waist and his heart-stopping eyes staring into her own, oh- what she would give- to just have him look at her with those eyes.
