Field of Flowers | Prologue

My life had always been quite ordinary...until I encountered something truly extraordinary.

It was January, and the snow was relentless, blanketing everything in sight. Frost coated the windows, and snow piled high against the door, locking me in and making it impossible for me to leave for work.

With nowhere to go, I embraced the moment, gazing out the window at the beautiful chaos of white, a warm cup of hot cocoa in hand. It wasn't long before the weight of my eyelids began to pull me down; I could feel how exhausted I was. Setting my coffee on the table in front of the couch, I wrapped myself snugly in my blanket, ready to drift off into my dreams, all while the wind howled around me, adding to the atmosphere of a perfectly cozy day.

Knock. Knock. Knock. A sound at the door roused me from my deep slumber. I felt a surge of irritation as I unwound myself from the comforting embrace of my duvet.

Who could possibly be knocking at this hour, especially during such a severe snowstorm?

I turned to the window, eager to catch a glimpse of the mysterious visitor, but all I saw was a wall of white. Confusion filled my mind, my brows furrowing in response. I decided to check the peephole in the door, but even that was obscured by a thick layer of snow. There was no way that snow could have completely shut me in! How long had I been asleep for it to pile up so high? A twinge of claustrophobia sparked within me, but I shook it off.

I placed my hand on the door handle, ready to confront whatever awaited me on the other side, even if it meant stepping into a wall of snow.

When I pushed the door wide open, my eyes shut tight, I was met with something unexpected. The warmth of the sun enveloped my freezing skin, a sudden contrast to the cold that had surrounded me moments before. As the delightful heat coaxed my eyes open, I took in the vibrant world before me. It was a field. But It wasn't just any fieldโ€”it was a breathtaking expanse filled with flowers: brilliant yellows, deep purples, fiery reds, and every hue in between.

The beauty of the scene was so overwhelming that I briefly questioned whether I had stepped into heaven. With that thought in mind, I released the door handle and plunged into this lush paradise before me.

I ran, skipped, hopped, and, of course, I tripped but laughed it off. I paused frequently to inhale the intoxicating scents of the flowers arranged in magnificent patterns across the field. The clear, fresh air was a delight to my senses, making it hard to believe I was still on earth.

I lay on the soft grass, confidently gazing up at the sky as it transformed into a mesmerizing purple-pink hue with the sun's descent. Suddenly, I heard a sharp snap that made me jump. I quickly scanned the area behind me, searching for the source of the sound, but found nothing. As I turned back, I encountered two figures in long white dresses. I lifted my gaze, meeting a pair of striking green eyes and another set of warm light brown.

These two stunning girls wore flower crowns atop their heads, exuding an ethereal beauty that captivated me.

My initial instinct might have been to flee from the two strangers who seemed to emerge out of nowhere, but their presence was so inviting that I found myself drawn to them instead. The girl with striking green eyes extended her hand toward me, and without hesitation, I accepted it. She effortlessly pulled me up to their level, and both of them began to study my face, even running their fingers through my hair, as if my appearance was more unfamiliar than theirsโ€”even though we were undoubtedly of the same species.

Before I knew it, the girl with brown eyes placed a delicate flower crown atop my head. In an instant, my soft light blue pajamas transformed into a stunning white gown, reminiscent of the elegant attire worn by the girls beside me. The gown had a two-piece design: a fitted top with long sleeves that left my midriff exposed, paired with a flowing skirt adorned with intricate floral and leaf embroidery. In that moment, I felt like an absolute goddess.

As I admired my new attire, I caught the girls giggling softly at my excitement. With a playful spark in our eyes, they each took my hands, and together we dashed across the vibrant flower field. We laughed and pranced, embracing the sheer joy of freedom. It felt like time had slowed down just for us.

At some point, we settled under a giant tree, relishing the shade and taking a moment to relax. We hadn't exchanged a word since arriving, and I didn't feel the need to initiate conversation. It was as if words weren't necessary for us to connect; the atmosphere was charged with an undeniable understanding. In my mind, I assigned names to both girls: Elisa for the one with the striking green eyes, and Madeline for the girl with warm brown eyes. Elisa was braiding my hair with skill, while Madeline focused intently on crafting more flower crowns nearby. Then, she moved closer and delicately slipped a beautifully crafted ring made from Mysotosis, also known as forget-me-nots, flowers onto my finger. I smiled at her, and she returned the gesture with warmth.

I've come to realize just how different Elisa and Madeline are. Elisa exudes openness and joy, immediately welcoming me with warmth as she was the first to extend her hand upon our meeting. In contrast, Madeline tends to keep to herself; she appears a bit more reserved around strangers. However, her kindness shines through. Despite her initial hesitation, it seems to be her genuine responsibility to befriend me and help me feel at home in this beautiful, intriguing place.

As soon as I noticed that Elisa's hands, which had been playfully running through my hair, had suddenly stopped, I turned to find her standing on her feet, eyes fixed on the horizon.

Curiosity piqued, I approached her side and immediately recognized the distress etched on her face. My gaze followed hers, but all I could see was the beautiful expanse of flowers sprinkled with the occasional tree. The wind began to pick up, and I look up to see our once vibrant pink sky, heralding the sunrise, transform into a moody gray.

Elisa darted past me, grasping Madeline's hand as they took off in the opposite direction. I followed, my concern growingโ€”something felt off. They halted before a vast forest, and in that moment, Elisa released Madeline's hand, letting her dash into the trees. Just as I made to follow, Elisa turned to face me, halting me in my tracks.

"No," she said firmly yet gently, the first word she ever spoke to me.

"But... why?" I pressed.

She stepped closer and confidently whispered, "You're not supposed to be here. Not yet." Then pressed the tip of her finger onto my forehead, which knocked me out.

I woke up on the couch in the house I thought I had left behind. Everything was just as I remembered it, and I was back in my blue pajamas. I glanced out the window and saw the familiar snowstorm swirling outside.

The field I had once desired was no longer there, but I reassured myself, "It was just a dream."

Despite the disappointment of not having experienced that place in reality and not being able to see my new friends again, I noticed a small Mysotosis flower ring resting on my coffee table, a possibility that there's still magic to be found.
