Chapter 1
Chapter 1
It’s nearly midnight and I’m loving the feel of the wind flowing through my hair as I rode my motorcycle silently through the night. I got a call last night telling me I’d better make it to California as one of my closest friends was on her deathbed. We hadn’t talked for a few years due to an argument, but she knew I’d be there when she needed me most. Her mother said it was important that I was there as soon as possible because she wouldn’t make it much longer. They didn’t tell me what was wrong just to hurry and get there. As I thought about it and drove, the tears spilled from my eyes making the world around me blurry. All I could hear was her mother’s voice.
" Allen...“, she said as she spoke softly on the other end.” Verility is dying and she’s begging for you. Please come. I know things ended badly for the both of you, but she really needs you now. Your the only person she wants to see.“, she pleaded.
" Marissa, you know I want to, but I can’t just pick up and leave everything. I have to work.”
" Please.“, she continued, ” she’s begging.”
" I’ll see what I can do.“, I said defeated.
Once I had hung up the phone I knew I had to go. She had been my first and only love. I couldn’t find anyone close in comparison. Every woman I had, I held them to her expectations. They just couldn’t sit on the throne I had put Verility on. As I drove deeper into the night I thought back to the very first moment I saw her. She took every ounce of breath I had in me because her beauty floored my existence. The way her jet black waist length hair flowed around her and shown in the sun. She had the perfect shade of plum lipstick on that day too. The way it made her hazel eyes stand out made me shiver just thinking about it. I had just turned nineteen and still had friends in high school. My dad coached the team and I went to help out every now and then. Verility was there one day watching her friend Zoey during cheer practice. We lived in Nashville and it was sweltering in September. I remember her wearing cut off jeans and a tied up shirt.
I nudged my dad.” Who is she?“, I whispered.
" Allen, her father is a doctor. Not saying you couldn’t go out with her, but you live in your parents attic apartment, you work on cars for a living and come help me on occasion. Her father will most likely disapprove. But son if you want my honest opinion...I say go for it. Have fun.”
I smiled. ” You watch, she will be mine before the football season is over.”
My dad patted me on the back.” Go for it.”
I worked out same as I always did in school Monday through Friday. The only difference now is that I had a gym membership. That’s something that never changed in my life....my only constant. I practiced with the guys on the team, but mostly with my friend Andrew. He was quarterback and star of the team.
" See that girl over there by the bleachers?“, he asked as he pointed in Verility’s direction.
" Yeah, I’ve noticed her.“, I said, acting casual like I hadn’t paid much attention.
“She asked me your name. I think she wants to get to know you.”
I grinned,” really.” He nodded towards her direction and she was looking at me. When she saw that I noticed she flashed me a million watt smile while her cheeks were burning red with embarrassment. I tossed the football back at Andrew.
" Be back in a few.” I was nervous as I made my way over to her. I had to try and play it cool though if I was ever going to impress her. ” So I hear you have a thing for me.”
“Maybe...“, she said, twirling her hair on her perfectly manicured nail.” I can also see that you might also have a thing for me as well. You can’t concentrate on anything except me today.”
I pulled her to me so she could see right into my blue eyes. My heart was racing because I was never this bold, but something told me I couldn’t let her go.“We are going to have to fix that now aren’t we.“Her breath hitched and she smiled a bit. She started to lean in, but I stopped her.” We need to have a proper first date. I will pick you up at seven and wear jeans.” I kissed her cheek and felt her blush.
" But you don’t even know where I live,″ she yelled back.
I turned around and walked backwards away from her, smiled and swiftly put my shades on.” Don’t worry baby I’ve got it covered.“Her mouth parted a little in surprise. I turned and walked towards my dad.” Well I think my work here is done for the day.”
He chuckled.“Well, son now you’ve got to worry about where you are taking her on the date.”
I patted my dad on the back.” Got it covered Pops.“I walked over to my Harley and got on. I sped away asking myself what the hell I was going to do on this date.
I saw a truck stop and decided to stop and get anything to keep me awake. I had been driving for about six hours. I left as soon as my shift had ended. I didn’t shower or anything. I always kept an extra set of clothes in my motorcycle bag so I wasn’t worried about that. I just didn’t know if I was actually going to go through until I sat on my bike and went the opposite direction of the house. As I pulled into the stop I saw a good looking girl wearing a teal tank top. It sent me back to our first date when I went to pick her up.I pulled along the street and it was like she was in a rush because she ran out of her house and down the sidewalk. Wearing a teal colored bandanna shirt covered in sequence with black jeans and heels to match her shirt. Her hair was put up in a half ponytail and she wore gold hoop earrings that matched a gold chain around her neck. They brought out her eyes. She was so beautiful and that made me instantly nervous. I know I had been staring because she noticed enough to speak up.
" You going to stare all night or are we going to have fun?“, she said impatiently, tapping her heel on the sidewalk.
" Oh.“, I said nervously.“You are just so beautiful.”
She smiled as she blushed,” Thank you.”
" Get on.“, I said. She did and wrapped her arms around my waist.” I think I’m going to take you somewhere different then I had planned. You deserve something special, dressed as beautiful as you are.”
“Ooo tell me!“, she squealed with excitement.
" Nope it’s a surprise.“, I said as I revved the bike and took off down the street.
A waitress brought me back to reality. She was a plump woman in her mid fifties if I had to guess. I happened to notice her name tag. ” Sorry Dianna, I’ve just got a lot my mind lately.”
" Would you like coffee or not?“, she said, annoyed.
“Yes please. Could you bring quite a few creamers?” She rolled her eyes and walked back to the kitchen. I knew it was going to be a long night. When Dianna came back I ordered a piece of apple pie and began thinking about that first date.We pulled up to what looked like an abandoned building and I shut off the bike.
" You can’t be serious.“, she said, annoyed and unimpressed.
" Oh I’m serious. Come on.“, I said, holding out my hand.
She took it cautiously.” This had better be good.“She followed me around the building and on the other side was a line to a club.” Is this club Genesis!“, she said with excitement.
I smirked.” Sure is.”
She stopped walking and pulled me back to look at her. “Wait, how are we getting in? Neither of us are twenty one.”
" Well, we are getting in because I’m friends with the bouncer Nathan and I have a fake ID. I fixed his bike and threw in a few upgrades he had been wanting for a while, but couldn’t afford. I got them cheap and did it as a gift. So he hooked me up.”
She squealed with excitement. ” I can’t wait to tell Zoey!”
I just smirked and took her hand. We got to the front of the line and I flashed my ID to Nathan. He didn’t even look and let us in.Her eyes were as big as saucers and she took it all in. It took her two seconds to drag me out to the dance floor. Her body moved as smooth as water over mine as we melded together as we danced. It was like we were meant to be because our bodies fit together like missing puzzle pieces. After about an hour I found a booth and ordered us some water.
" Come on.“, she whined playfully as she ran her foot up my leg , ” get me a beer. You have ID.”
I gave her a playful sideways smile.” I can’t tonight. It’s our first date and I can’t be giving the wrong impression to your parents.”
She smiled.” You win this time only because you’re right and I like you. I want to have a second date without my father hating you.”
" So what’s it like having a doctor for a father?“, I asked.
Her face fell.” He gives me whatever I want to keep me happy because he never has time for me. My mom is always busy going to parties with my dad or dealing with her clients.”
" Clients?“,I asked.
" Oh, I forgot to tell you my mom’s a lawyer. What do your parents do?”
I instantly felt bad about telling her how great my childhood was. ” Well, as you’ve probably figured out my dad is the eleventh grade science teacher and coaches the football team. My mom stayed home with my brother and I. They are around so much we felt smothered at times, but I know it’s out of love.”
She had a dreamy look in her eyes.” That sounds amazing. I wish my home life was like that.”
I reached across the table and took her hands in mine. Looking in her eyes and noticing how the light made them shimmer.” You can always come to my house and hang out. My mom and dad say there is always room for more.
" Sure. I’d like that.”
We talked for about another hour or so before we left to take her home.I walked her to her front door.I pulled her close like the first time we met. I looked in her eyes.” I had a great time with you tonight.”
“Me too.“, she said, looking up at me through her lashes.” Can we do this again?”
I kissed her softly.” Really soon.. “I left her standing in as much awe as I felt. I never acted this way, but I also hadn’t ever flirted like this either. She was still watching as I got on my bike and sped down the street.I came back to reality when I finished my pie. I left a tip and decided it was time to get back on the road. here…
