Chapter 1

KANAN'S POV

I just can't believe what's happening in my life. Right now, I'm being led to the wedding chamber by my mother on my side in this wedding lehenga. Two years back, I had never imagined my life to turn like this. It's my wedding today and I am going to be tied in a bond of marriage with Mr. Viraj Shekhawat, who is a perfect guy for me according to my parents. I never doubt my parents, because they always wanted the best for me, but having an arranged marriage is something I had never thought of. I haven't even seen him once, just the photos. For the first time, I am going to see my husband in reality. This is both an exciting feeling as well as scary.

As I enter the chamber, I see people, a lot of people in the area. The sound of all kinds of bollywood music about weddings in the air, I wish I could also join them. I love to play guitar and piano, and being a pianist has always been my dream but as soon as my studies got completed, dad got a good guy for me to get married and according to mom, he is going to be the best for me. I am a very hopeless romantic, who spends all her holidays rejecting plans of her friends, and staying indoors reading romantic books or watching emotional romantic dramas. Yes, that's how I am.

"Daughter, sit here", mom asked me to sit somewhere, and it was not somewhere, it was next to him. I nodded a yes and held my dress nicely, and sat there beside him. I couldn't hold my excitement and I saw his hands, they looked manly, rough and tough, those fingers and a cold steel ring in one of them. My eyes went more up, looking at him from bottom to top, his face, it was perfectly built. He looked like a well built man, as I could see from his shoulders. He had brown almond eyes, and plump lips which turned into a smile as he saw me adoring him. I smiled back.

I took my eyes away from him. To be honest, I never imagined my husband to be like this. Studying and living abroad, my thinking about my would-be husband had completely changed, but that smile he passed onto me. Okay, I would agree, it was really heart warming.

"Let's begin with the vows", I heard his dad say and then what, our wedding started.

After the wedding vows were taken, our little eye contacts had already happened. I was too shy whenever he caught me looking at him. He also turned around if he felt like a distraction, he could understand I was feeling awkward.

Someone came from behind and gave him the small box like thing in which vermilion was kept. I looked at him, his face had a serious expression. Is he going to be this serious even after our marriage? Slowly, his two fingers dipped in that red powdery stuff and using his other hand, removing my maang tika, he put it there. I closed my eyes as I could feel some of the powder trickle down my face.

Next my mother in law, removed the chunar I was wearing to a side, so that he could get space to take his hands around my neck and tie the nuptial chain. I closed my eyes making myself understand that finally I have been wedded of. The main things of an Indian Hindu marriage are completed.

"Rise up my dear!" His mom, yes it had to be his mom.

I looked up and saw a smiling face, eyes not visible as she passed me an eye smile, wrinkles on her skin which showed her experience, a few white hair on her black bob cut, and that red Matt lipstick. I smiled back.

The priest asked us to take the vows around the fire, Saat fere in our local Indian terms. My heart continued to race fast with each and every step we took. First he was asked to walk in front and then it was my turn. Soon the wedding rituals were over.

"You look so beautiful, dear. I hope you love being at our home and with Viraj. We haven't ever met right, I can understand the level of tension and anxiety you have right now, but don't worry, I'll ensure that you never feel like a stranger at your home, I mean your new home." She patted my head.

"I am really happy about this," I said if that's what she wanted to hear.

VIRAJ'S POV

We were taken to have a meal together, her family and mine. Definitely we were blessed to have a connection with a family like hers, we didn't stand anywhere close to them. I don't know what her dad saw in me, so he decided to wed his daughter in my hands. I really feel nervous about this.

"Eat more Viraj", Kanan's mom passed me some more kadhai paneer.

I smiled and took some in my plate, I can't show this nervousness to them but I can't help it. My eyes then landed on Kanan, she was eating delicately. I noticed how her mouth curled and relaxed as she gulped the food down, she was certainly beautiful and in that red bridal dress, she looked no less than a deity.

I kept on eating the food and did catch her staring at me many times, but I didn't look back. I had no intentions of scaring her. "We have a thing to tell." Mom said.

There was a seriousness on her face, and everyone started to look at her.

"Mister Gaur (Kanan's dad), we all know that our family is not of the same economic status as yours and that's why we had this kind of a simple wedding. We all are aware of your idea of Kanan and Viraj having their own separate house, but right now we can't ensure that."

"Mrs. Shekhawat, you need not worry about it. We have already seen a plot for the two of them. Won't it be a nice idea to get it named and ready for them to move in?" Kanan's mom said.

"I really appreciate that, but how do we just accept it...." Mom was anxious again. Of course she would be, since our wedding had been decided, most of the things were being done by them only.

Kanan's mom put a hand on my mom's hand, "Do not worry, Viraj is a hardworking guy. We know that he'll soon build a fortune of his own, and bring laurels to your home, till then, just accept this now. By the time it gets ready, Kanan will stay at your house. Alright Kanan?"

"Sure mom as you say", Kanan said without any expression on her face.

I don't really know if she's happy with this marriage or not, this is going to be the first thing I am going to talk about with her.

Soon the discussion was over, and the conclusion was that she's going to our home and later we'll shift into that new house for the two of us.

There was a great deal of kissing and hugging as they left their daughter to be taken by us. She was crying a lot, and why won't she? She was giving up such a good lifestyle, her parents, her pet dog Tommy, and everything behind, to come with me. Who was I? Her husband, her arranged husband, whom she never really knew before she saw me today. It was difficult for her.

Soon mom helped her enter the car, and she sat beside me. She looked at me as the windows closed. I guess this was the first time we were making eye to eye contact and that too mutually. Her eyes were filled with tears, I so much wanted to wipe them. I took out my handkerchief and passed it to her, she looked at my face and then the handkerchief.

"Please don't cry." I said and turned my face away seeing the view outside the window. We were going down the roads, along the countryside towards my house. Soon I felt my hand empty, I kept it back on my lap, she was wiping her tears.

"Thank you", after a while she spoke.

I looked in her direction, she was doing the same thing as me, watching outside.

I released a deep sigh and she looked at me. "What was that for?"

"Hmm?" I quirked my brows at her.

"Are you unhappy with our marriage? Did you, I mean... Loved someone else..."

I stared at her. "No, there's nothing like that."

She sat back. Again, she was watching outside the window. I smiled at her, I know she wasn't seeing. It was a good feeling, I don't know why I feel it won't be that bad.
