The Proposal
— "There is no doubt that you have reached an enormous technical level. They are clearly very advanced. There are just a few... design choices that were made for these robots that we do not fully understand. We hope you can clarify these choices."
— "She can dance. She can sing. She has cutting-edge technology at her fingertips. She can take song suggestions… she can even make ice cream."
— "With all due respect... these are not the choices I'm talking about, Mr. Afton."
"Hello, diary. Is this how I have to start writing every day? Maybe so, maybe not. Well, let's go. I've still been looking for a job offer. I've never been good at it. But, amazingly enough, apparently, I found one! Surprising, isn't it? For me, it is. The interview is today. My future boss, God willing, has already sent me the location of the interview. It's in Hurricane, it's not that far from here. Getting away a little on the subject, writing in this diary has helped me a lot to deal with anxiety. I have to thank my psychologist one day."
Oliver closed his diary. He put his black pen in its case and zipped it up. He got up from his chair and walked over to his bed. He picked up his backpack and put it on his back. He walked to his bedroom door and, with his hand on the doorknob, his cell phone vibrated. Oliver took his cell phone out of his pocket and unlocked it. It was a text from his girlfriend, Isabella.
"Are you going to the interview?"
"Yeah"
"Why is the interview so late?"
"I don't know"
"Tell me everything when you come back, okay??"
"OK"
He turned off his cell phone and put it in his pocket again. He opened the door to his room, went out and closed it. He walked to the door, took his keys from his other pocket and unlocked it. He walked to the front of his house and waited for the app car to arrive. Three minutes later, the car arrived. He opened his door and entered. — "Where are we going?" - the driver asked. Oliver told him the address; They spent ten minutes in that car.
— "Here, we have arrived." - said the driver - "Thank you. It's fourteen dollars, right?" - asked Oliver, handing the money to the driver - "Yes, thank you." - the driver replied. Oliver got out of the car, slammed the door and came across a large pizzeria. Its sign, also huge and bright, said "Circus Baby's Pizza World." Above the sign was a pale child, probably part of the attraction of the place, with pigtails. She had open arms and was smiling. Her hair was red, her eyes were blue and she was wearing some kind of red dress. Below the sign, there were two posters: a clown and a female clown. Both were giants; the front of the pizzeria was actually quite attractive. — "Will the interview be here?" - asked Oliver, to himself. At this point, he began to become suspicious. It was eleven o'clock at night, the street was deserted and the job interview would take place in a very inviting pizzeria, but one that he had never heard of. He walked across the stone floor to the pizzeria's yellow door and entered. For some reason, it was unlocked. He entered and there was no one inside, but everything was connected. Lights, sound and... robots. Those robots were so strange. Big, huge. Weird. All pale. Two robots, apparently female, resembled humans; a child and a ballerina. Three resembled animals; a bear and a fox. The place was full of tables and toys. But that didn't really matter. Oliver continued walking until he found an open elevator, isolated from everything else. If he hadn't found it so easily, he would have said it was hidden. He walked over to it and entered; He remembered that they agreed for the interview to take place on another floor. Although from the outside the pizzeria didn't appear to have any other floor. Oliver pressed the button numbered "2" and the elevator doors closed. Then, his cell phone rang. It was his boss, and he was calling. Oliver answered. — "You're hired." - his boss said. Without having time to speak, his boss hung up.
And the elevator plummeted.
