“Shyam, stop please,” said Meera grabbing onto his arm. “What happened? What’s making you so upset?”

“Meera, let go,” he said. His eyes were cold green. “I know what I mean to you now,” he said turning his head to look into her eyes. His hair flung around his forehead.

She saw the hurt reflect in his eyes. She did not know that a simple mistake would turn into a serious matter. So serious it could break them apart.

“What I said was just something that came out of my mouth in that moment. Aunty Veena was around there too and I got scared. And I have said I am sorry a million times already. It just came out of my mouth in the spur of the moment. Don’t you ever make mistakes or jokes?”

“No Meera,” he turned around and looked deep into her eyes. “Anything about you is never a joke.”

Meera looked into his eyes and read his emotions. She knew what he was saying and she knew his love for her was very deep, true and mad. And she felt the same for him. She was serious about him. She loved him too.Madly. It was just a mistake that she introduced him as a “friend” to her friends.

“I am thinking of giving my you entire life, my love, my soul.I see marriage , kids, our house together. But when you said I am just a friend, it showed that you are still in doubt.”

“Shyam its not like that,”Meera explained. “You know I love you. It just came out I don’t know how.” Meera tried to explain. She positioned herself in front of him hoping he would put his arms around her.

“Nahi Meera,’ Shyam said pushing her away gently. “What came out is what’s in your heart.”

“Shyam,” Meera got hold of his hand as he tried to leave. “Please don’t drag this. Please” She looked into his eyes. He had already stepped out of the door of the room into the hall.

“Shyamal!,” someone called from afar. “Come on.”

“Yeap,” Shyamal responded.

“Shyam,” Meera said blocking his way. She touched his face. “We’ve been at this since yesterday. I am dying for you to hold me.” She touched his lips with her fingertips. “ I am craving for your lips.”

“Don’t do this Meera,” he stated. “You know you have me wrapped around your little finger. Move aside.” His eyes were cold and fierce.

Meera stepped aside cursing herself. She followed him slowly down the hall to the function arena. She took her seat next to her brothers girlfiend. Shyamal sat next to Meera’s brother who was his best friend. That’s how they met. At first she denied her feelings for him but then his sincerity and charm got the better of her. She was hooked. In love. Hopelessly deep and there was no turning back. She wanted him. All of him.

The number of girls eyeing him in the functions the last 3 days was a concern and he began flirting with them too. She knew it was just a show. But it still didn’t sit well with her. What have I done? What went wrong? One moment and everything went haywire.

Shyamal was avoiding Meera all day at the wedding sangeet ceremony. Meera tried many times to talk to him. She didn’t like it at all when he wasn’t close by. She felt incomplete. She could not sleep all night and woke up early morning dressed and all just to see him. It was past 9am and Shyamal was no where to be seen.

She searched the whole premises. It was a big mansion and had many rooms and patios attached to it. She bumped into her brother who told her that Shyam was with them through the night.

“What’s wrong Meera?,” Aryan asked his sister. “Shyam is kind of weird and you look miserable. All ok between you two?”

“Yes bhai,’ Meera lied. “Nothing to worry about.”

Aryan could see through his sister. He adored her like a daughter even though she was a step-sister and there was just a gap of 6 years between them. They met each other just a year and half ago when Meera turned 23. Their dad had a heart attack, survived it, and decided that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with all his children. Aryan was the child of the first marriage and his mother took him and fled the country when they divorced. Dad, however, always had a tab on their whereabouts. That’s why they shifted to where Aryan lived. That’s where she found Shyam. More like he found her. He pursued her for 6 months before she gave in. She was super attracted to him from the very beginning but she had a coarse past and didn’t want any relationships. Especially with her brother’s best friend, who in the Indian culture would be regarded as, or should be regarded as a brother too.

“Meera,” Aryan urged. “Don’t lie. Tell me what’s going on.”

“I don’t know bhai,” Meera tried desperately to avoid eye contact but couldn’t save the tear that rolled down.

“Did you two have a fight,” Aryan asked. Aryan knew Shyam long before he even knew Meera existed. He was a very genuine guy. He was just right for innocent Meera.

Meera just looked up at Aryan. Tears flowed. “I don’t know bhai,” Meera stated.

Aryan hugged her. He knew it wasn’t his jurisdiction, but he couldn’t see her cry. “Do you want me to talk to him?”

“No bhai,” Meera said. “I’ll sort this out.”

“Good,” Aryan said, “let me know if you need me. You know I am here for you bacha.”

“Thank you Bhai.”

Aryan walked on and Meera was alone in the huge foyer. She missed Shyamal. She knelt and cried. This is why she didn’t want a relationship in the first place. She was scared of the tears it would bring. She drew in a deep breath and looked up at the open sky above silently praying.

There he stood, elbows propped on the balcony watching from the first floor. God knows how long he was there for. Meera got up not taking her eyes off him. He looked fresh and neatly shaven and had a look on his face that Meera couldn’t read. She was about to rush off to him when he turned around and disappeared.

It was around the afternoon when Meera caught hold of Shyam again. She held onto his arm tightly and walked him towards a private balcony. There were many people around and the sangeet ceremony was about to begin. Decorations were up and the hall was looking beautiful. Slow romantic songs were playing in the background and romance was floating in the air. Meera was yet to get dressed for the night.

“Shyam,” she whispered, “how much longer is this going to last? enough already. I said I am sorry, and I mean it.”

“Meera,” Shyamal responded. “I am not in the mood to talk now. Just let go.”

“Nahi Shyam,” Meera pleaded. “You are stretching this too much. Its not that big of an issue.”

“I may not be a big issue to you Meera,” Shyamal started.

“No, Shyam, you are getting this wrong.” Meera insisted.

“And I am correcting it now,” Shyamal said with a straight face. A slight frown settled in the midst of his brows.

Meera had a strong urge to reach and touch his hair that danced on his forehead. Its like she fell in love with his angry side too. She wanted to bite kiss his lips.

Shyam started to leave. Meera caught his arm again as he was exiting the doorway.

“Shyam,” Meera said. “Don't do this please. You are breaking my heart.”

“Welcome to the club Meera,” Shyamal said walking out again.

“Shyam!” Meera said decisively. “By the end of this wedding, if you don't come to, I swear you will never see my face ever again.”

“Let go,” Shyam said firmly.

“Meera Meera,” came a taunting female voice. It was Minisha. Shyamal and Aryan’s childhood friend. “Let the poor guy go.”

“Stay out of this Minisha,” Meera stated. Anger creeped over her at the very sight of Minisha.

“Hi Shyamal,” Minisha purred.

“Hi,” Shyamal smiled and nodded a smile that angered Meera even more.

“Minisha, do you mind,” Meera stated . “We were discussing something private.”

“I think we are done,” Shyamal cut her in.

Minisha laughed. “Small town girl trying to woo a city boy. Never gonna happen. You aren’t worth it Meera. Right Shyamal?”

“Right or wrong, I don’t know. I feel suffocated at the moment so excuse me ladies.” Shyamal stepped out as Minisha followed him laughing.

Meera’s eyes swelled with tears. This was a bit too much now. She couldn’t get what Shyamal was so upset about.
