Chapter 1

I always knew that Chelsea was the woman that I wanted to marry. I had devoted most of my life working towards becoming the man that she would be proud of and finally I can say that that day has finally come.

Growing up in a gated community where we both did, her father was very strict. Raising her as a devoted Catholic, there is nothing she did against their doctrine. Whilst I on the other hand despite coming from old money, my parents allowed me and my brother to live our lives how we saw best.

My young brother was the typical good boy, loved by all the parents in the community. There was no errand he was sent on that he didn’t perform. He was always just a call away and I noticed how they took advantage of him but he thought it was a good thing.

‘There comes the youngest billionaire.’ Dad says bringing me out of my reverie.

I smile widely. He is proud and he will stop at nothing to show me off.

Everyone in the room claps as I reach where my parents are. My dad has aged gracefully so has his young wife, our step mother who we love still.

‘I am so proud of you son. You have made us proud.’ He says and I smile going to kiss mum on the forehead.

‘You have made me the happiest woman in the world Mwila. Every mother wants to wake up to such news and some women don’t live long enough to witness such moments but look at me.’

She is beaming with pride and that is all that matters right now. As long as my parents are happy then I am at peace.

‘Where is Sally? I thought you would be here with her.’ Dad says.

‘Unfortunately that boat sailed a long time ago.’ Kabwe, my young brother says.

‘That’s sad, the two of you were going to make a fine couple. She comes from money and you do too. She was flourishing being by her father’s side and look at you adding billions to our family name. Where will you find a girl like her?’

‘They are so many girls in the community mother.’

Just then Chelsea walks towards us, she is wearing a black body-hugging dress. Not indecent but enough for me to see her curves.

‘Hey babe.’ Kabwe says kissing her right cheek.

‘Babe?’ I ask looking at my parents, Kabwe and Chelsea. None of them looks shocked.

‘You have been so busy of late, we didn’t want to bore you with the news.’ Chelsea says showing off her ring.

‘What? You are engaged?’

‘We have been for a month now. He proposed during a dinner the night you travelled to Brazil for business.’

‘A month and none of you thought of telling me?’ I ask suddenly feeling hot. I unfasten my bowtie and use my hand to fan some air.

‘Son are you okay?’

‘I am mother, let me just get some air.’ I say excusing myself before any of them can say anything.

I walk to the balcony and completely take off my bow tie. I am struggling with untying my button when Chelsea comes through.

‘Let me help you.’

‘I don’t need your help.’

‘Oh come on Mwila.’ She says. She is so close to me, I was this close to making her my woman and then she decided to go for the one man I can’t fight to win her over.

‘There you go, much better.’

‘Go back inside.’

‘Not when you are like this.’

‘Did they send you?’

She shakes her head.

‘Your brother wanted to come but I suggested that I do.’

‘Why?’

‘Well you looked like you were mad at your entire family for hiding this from you so since I am not yet your family I figured I come.’

‘You will never be my family.’

The look on her face shows that what I have just said didn’t come out the way it was supposed to.

‘Listen Chelsea, I have no issue with you okay.’

‘You don’t have to pretend Mwila, I know you have never approved of me. I am not polished like the women you go out with, whilst they couldn’t wait to get in your bed I was raised in a home where we had to wait till our wedding night to do anything. I am not your ideal woman but Kabwe sees me and he loves me, you will have to accept me.’

‘So you will lose your virginity to him?’

She looks offended, I don’t even bother correcting myself.

‘Eventually you will have to accept that I am good enough for your family. Eventually you will see that I am not some spoilt Catholic girl. I will be a loving wife to your brother and I will make sure that I be a good daughter in law and give your parents grandchildren that will take over their empire after they are gone. I don’t think you have it in you to be a father do you?’

‘And April is what? A pet?’

‘We both know that your parents have been raising her whilst you galavant.’

‘Go back to your fiancé, I don’t want to ruin this façade of a relationship that you have.’

‘Façade?’

‘Leave Chelsea.’

She opens her mouth to say something but decides against it.

‘That’s what I thought.’
