Remi

I leaned over peaking into my professor’s office, my left leg bouncing as I sat down outside on the brown bench. I had a short break in between my classes and his office hours hardly aligned with my schedule. This was the only opportunity I had to make a plea for my final grade, “Ms. Dawson?” I stood up and walked into his office, “How can I help?”

I took a seat in the leather chair facing his desk, “Professor please I am begging you can I please get a redo on the exam, you know me, that grade doesn’t reflect the type of student I am, I’m better than that..”

His gaze shifted to his desktop, “I was very disappointed when I saw your grade...” A small wave of relief washed over me, “But nevertheless it’syourgrade, you sat down and took the test Remi.”

I put my face in my palms on the brink of balling in his office. This week has been caked in exams and I found myself slipping into my little space for comfort. Not having a Daddy to help me through it, I would be in there for hours. I took a deep breath, “Please, there has to be something you can do professor.”

I didn’t build a relationship over the course of the semester for kicks. He looked at me before slowly shifting his gaze to the computer once again, “Well...” A stir of hope slowly ignited my chest, “There is a harder take home exam that could cover your grade.” He scooted back in his chair and pulled on a drawer to his right, “I doubt you’ll get higher...” He slammed a huge packet on the space in front of me, “Highly.”

I took the packet and began flipping through it, “Thank you so much Professor I’ll do my best.” I bumped the next person walking into his office, rushing to eat before my next lecture hall. I started flipping through the packet and my eyes widen slowly realizing how much work I had in store for me.

I bumped shoulders with someone again this time falling on my ass at the strength of the push. I collected my things before looking up at the pair in front of me. It was Grant and Natalie, the worst couple to roam the halls of the small university of New Gretch. “People usually watch where they’re going.”

I scoffed as I stood up straightening myself, “I could say the same to you asswipe.” I rubbed my shoulder, the lingering pain of the push present.

Grant smirked, “You’re lucky I didn’t break it stupid.”

“Noyou’relucky you didn’t break it.” Throughout the years I’d learn to talk back, “Can’t afford a girlfriend and my hospital bill we both know that.”

His face turned a slight red tint, “If only your looks was as sharp as your mouth.”

“You may have the looks but they don’t make up for the fact that you have the emotional intelligence of a newborn baby.”

He smirked, “Are you calling me attractive Remi?”

Natalie put her arm around Grant pulling him closer, “Don’t you have like a nerdy lecture hall to be in?”

I rolled my eyes, annoyed at the bullying antics they continued to throw at me each encounter. I began to walk away, “And don’t you have some crack corner to work?” I could hear her gasp behind me and continued down to the cafeteria for whatever they had left.

Considering we lived in a small town in the middle of nowhere, we have had the privilege of seeing each other since the day we were born. Although they were a year older than me, it made no difference. Same hospital, same daycare, same primary school...all the way up to our first year of uni. I’ve finally concluded no matter how older we get, stuck in this small town, the “hierarchy” would never change.

Meaning I was subjected to getting bullied by Grant and Natalie until the day I move out or die. I chuckled to myself imaging us in nursing homes fighting for who gets to change the channel first. I continued to look through the packet as I decided what to eat.

I sat in my usual corner as I ate figuring out how I was going to complete this impossible assignment. I munched on another crispy fry as I turned the page, “Hey Dawson.”

I turned around and my vision was instantly blurred by something cold. I shut my eyes close as the feeling burned my face and flowed down my neck. I stood up and wiped my eyes to see Natalie with a cup in her hand snickering. “That’ll teach you something.”

I grabbed her by the shoulders and dragged her down, “I could fucking kill you!” The packet flashed in my mind and I quickly looked back to see it drenched in the blue slushie. My lips quivered and I pushed myself off of Natalie feeling myself start to hyperventilate.

Breathe Remi.

That was my one chance, she ruined my one chance.

Breathe Remi.

I ran my fingers through my hair as I tried to pull it out of my damp face that burned red. “Fuck.” I whimpered and grabbed the wet packet along with my things walking out of the cafeteria.

I opened a random door down the hall and threw the packet on the floor slouching down in the corner. I placed my bag down in front of me as I pulled my legs to my chest rocking myself back and forth.

Breathe Remi.

Tears began to sting my eyes and my nose burned as my mind became numb at the possibility of me failing this class. I couldn’t fail, it was all over if I failed. I could feel myself began to slip as the anxiety cascaded itself over my entire body. My mind was desperately trying to calm itself. I grabbed my bag in front of me and quickly unzipped it, getting my emergency stuffie.

I held it close to me and I tried to tell myself small whispers to keep me alert. It was no use, I needed the comfort and this was my mind’s way of achieving that.

I held my stuffie close to me as I began to slip into my little space.
