Chapter 1

“Yes, just place the console right there in the corner.”

“Are you sure Thomas you won’t be able to move it unless I come over to

help.”

“Ha, I’ve told you before that just because I can’t walk doesn’t mean I can’t do something so easy as move a console.”

Thomas laughed while he struck a pose in his wheelchair.

“That isn’t important, when are you getting your own console Brian.”

“Mine is going to come in a couple weeks, I didn’t preorder mine early enough and now I’m going to miss the launch of the game now!”

Thomas flashes a smug look while raising his chin.

“Heh. I’m going to get ahead of you now, you’re going to have to ask for my help this time.”

“That’s kinda refreshing, I’m finally going to get to cash in all those favors.”

As Brian walks towards the couch he guffaws thinking of the future fun.

“How did you manage to pre order this anyway? The backlog is insane.”

“I’ve been following the progress of the game since it was first announced and put in for mine the moment it was announced back in 2041.”

Thomas wheeled himself over to the brand new console and put his hand on the helmet with a look of longing on his face.

“I’ll finally be able to walk again, even if it is just a game.”

Brian looks over at his best friend with a giant smile on his face. He started to look forward to their adventures together in the game.

“It is the year 2043 and the Sunshine Corporation finally releases their long anticipated VR MMORPG. The technology that was originally invented for a fully immersive training in the American military back in 2035 has finally made its way to the public with this long anticipated game ‘Myth’. With me today is Dr. Tukey the head of Sunshine’s development team who is here to explain the technology behind ‘Myth’”

On the television scene there was an interview being held between an elderly man and a female news anchor.

“Hello everyone, my name is Dr. Tukey from the development team of ‘Myth’ and I am here today to give you an overview of the direct brain connection or DBC. As stated this was originally created for military training to save money and provide a more higher level training. It proved so effective that in 2039 the government decided to apply it to public schooling to allow students to get an immersive education. This proved just as effective and the technology was adopted all across the world.”

The female news anchor nodded along in understanding. She then asked the question most of her viewers really wanted to hear.

“So how did Sunshine Corporation decide to take this military technology and apply it to a video game?”

Dr. Tukey flashes a bright childlike smile unfitting for his elderly look.

“We at Sunshine prefer to say that we created a world. It is not just a video game anymore it is an entire world that we created for players to explore.”

With such a strange response the news anchor could only tilt her head.

“Hmmm what do you mean by this?”

“I believe all the players will experience this today with the official release at noon. But I will explain something as a sneak peak. Every NPC has a certain level of artificial intelligence meaning that every action you take is observed and the NPCs form opinions based on these. This means that players will form reputations and become a part of the world itself. This is why we say that it is a world that the player will be exploring and becoming a part of.”

“This sounds fascinating. Thank you for your time today Dr. Tukey, next we will talk about the decline of professional sports. We will now go to reporter...”

Thomas turned off the 10 o’clock news as he made his way over to the kitchen to eat his meal before he settled in for the launch of ‘Myth’.

He had been looking forward to this for the last 2 years, he barely slept last night thinking of being able to do everything couldn’t for the last 7 years.

He promised to himself he was going to travel every inch of this new world. He didn’t care about anything else but doing just like Dr. Tukey said he was going to be part of this new world.

He finished his meal and went over to his console before putting on his helmet. He then switched on the console from his wheelchair.

He then closed his eyes as the virtual display came up.

Welcome to the world of Myth.
