The Screaming Sign
Rain hammered the chrome skyscrapers of Neo-Tokyo, their neon glow turning the slick streets into a rainbow mess. Detective Kenzo Nakamura, his trench coat plastered to his lean frame, surveyed the scene. It wasn't a dead body, that's for sure. A woman's voice, panicked and loud, was blaring from a giant advertisement screen showing happy people on a fake beach.
Nakamura, a man known for his icy calm, felt a shiver crawl down his spine. Glitches in the city's vast computer network, the Hive, happened sometimes, but a voice, a real person begging for help? Never. He tapped his neural implant, pulling up the city's security cameras. Nothing. The ad just showed the smiling couple frozen in time.
His partner, Dr. Hana Sato, a woman who scoffed at anything that couldn't be proven with hard facts, walked up. "Another malfunctioning ad, Nakamura? Or are you seeing things from all that greasy ramen again?"
Nakamura ignored her teasing. "This is different, Hana. This feels... real."
Hana laughed, but a sliver of doubt flickered in her eyes. Nakamura was known for his gut feelings, and this one felt like a dark storm brewing on the horizon. He made a decision then and there. They were going to find that voice, no matter what creepy digital maze they had to crawl through.
