My loft was a mess of canvases, paint splatters, and half-empty wine bottles. It was my sanctuary, my kingdom, and I ruled it with an artist's arrogant flair. The afternoon sun poured in through the large windows, casting dramatic shadows that played perfectly off my latest masterpiece—a turbulent explosion of reds and blacks that I knew was destined to be respected like it should be.
I was in the middle of adding the final touches when the knock came. Soft, hesitant. I set down my brush, annoyance and frustration flickering through me.
Who the hell would interrupt me while i was making my masterpiece??!
When I opened the door, TᕼEᖇE ᔕᕼE ᗯᗩᔕ. Her presence was both jarring and captivating, like a polished diamond in a rough stone quarry. Her hair, a cascade of chestnut waves, framed a face that was too serene, too perfect for 𝚖𝚢 𝚌𝚑𝚊𝚘𝚝𝚒𝚌 𝚠𝚘𝚛𝚕𝚍. She wore a tailored coat, pristine and out of place amidst my artistic clutter.
"Hey, I'm Emily, your the artist Vince Archer? right?" she asked, her voice a gentle contrast to the rough textures around us. "Emily Carter. I’m here about the exhibition."
I let my gaze travel over her, from her carefully styled hair to her polished shoes. She was a curator, no doubt. Another one of those people who thought they could understand art by labeling it. I extended a paint-streaked hand, a smirk playing at my lips.
"yeah.. i’m Vince Archer. you can come in."
She smiled softly and stepped inside, her eyes widening as she took in the disarray. I watched her closely, curious to see how she would react to my world. "Your work is... powerful," she said, choosing her words with care. "I’ve seen some of it at the gallery, but seeing it here, in your space, it’s something else entirely."
I couldn’t help but feel a surge of pride. My art was intense, visceral. It was designed to evoke a reaction, to make people feel. "Glad you think so," I said, casually leaning against a table. "so.. what brings you here, Emily?"
She turned those wide eyes on me, eyes that were clearly trying to dissect me. "I’ve been asked to curate a new exhibition at the Rosewood Gallery. We want to feature local artists who bring a unique perspective to contemporary art. and.. of course your work stood out."
Of course it did. I was a cut above the rest, and I knew it. But I was intrigued by her.
There was something in her gaze, a mix of admiration and something else was it curiosity? maybe. Or was it fear? "Honestly glad to know you pick me" I asked, giving her my most charming smile. "Rosewood gallery is full of meaningless and uncreative art."
The people who make those paintings should never walk on this earth again. I hated it.
"exactly, your art has a raw honesty to it," she replied, her voice steady but her eyes revealing more. "It’s like you’re not afraid to let people see the darkness inside you. That’s rare."
Her insight was unexpected, and it pleased me. She saw beyond the surface, saw the genius in the madness. "I suppose we all have our ways of dealing with the darkness.." I said, my tone more contemplative.
Emily nodded, a flicker of something dark crossing her face. "Yes, we do."
We spent the next hour discussing the exhibition. She was intelligent, passionate, and surprisingly insightful. She had a vision that complemented my own, and I guess i found myself genuinely enjoying her company. There was a fire in her that matched my own, a depth that intrigued me.
As she left, promising to send over the official papers the next day, I stood by the window, watching her walk down the street. Her figure, so poised and controlled, gradually blended into the twilight. There was something about Emily that felt different, something that stirred a primal hunger in me and i wanted more.
I then turned back to my painting, but my thoughts were no longer focused on the canvas. Emily Carter had entered my world, and I was already planning how to make sure she stayed in it and didn’t leave.
My life, my art.. it was all about to become much more interesting..
