Chapter 1
Beep, Beep, Beep.
Was all I heard when I came too.
'why the fuck am I in the hospital?' I thought to myself.
I hate hospitals. I hate them with a passion.
I groaned as I went to rub my eyes but pain shot threw my shoulder and chest.
"Sir don't move, you have been shot on the right side of your chest and shoulder twice." An angelic voice said. Her voice made me melt on the inside and feel relaxed and completely at ease. I have no idea why I feel like this but I do. And it scared the shit out of me.
But I welcome the feeling.
I fluttered my eyes and looked to my right where the nose came from and hisses.
"Oh don't turn your head, you're rip a stitch." She said and leaned over me.
And hot damn she was gorgeous a goddess at that.
"How did I get here.?" I asked.
"Your friends brought you on, you lost a lot of blood and need a blood transfusion. You were out for 2 days." She said.
"2 days?" I asked in disbelief.
"Yes you hit your head pretty hard to a big old goose egg and 6 stitches. And minor swelling to the brain. The swelling is what kept you out for 2 days. Your friend Mr. Smith will be back shortly. He went to get some food. Here is a glass of water. I'll call your friend to let him know you're awake." She said.
"Thank you ms." I said.
"Your welcome oh I forgot my manners I'm nurse Abigail I'll be your nurse while you're here. I'll go get the doctor to check you." She said and she grabbed a tray that has gauze with blood on it.
"She just got done changing my dressing I seemed. I nodded my head and took a drink of my water as she left.
A few minutes later Abigail walked in with a doctor.
"Ah nice to see you awake Kyler. I am Dr. Dickson. How are you feeling?" Doc said.
"I'm good. I don't feel my head injury but I feel the one in my chest and shoulder." I explained.
"Ok that's good the headache medicine nurse Abigail gave you while changing your dressing kicked in. That's why you don't feel it now. The pain in your shoulder should dull soon from the medicine as well. It has not kicked in all the way yet." Doc said.
I nodded for him to continue.
"What is the last thing you remember?" He asked.
"I was at a restaurant with my family for our weekly family dinner. I was on my way home to meet up with my girlfriend who was home from work. I was driving down the freeway when a car pulled up in front of me and then I remember getting shot at them every went black." I said. The doctor nodded.
Your car was found by exit 80 flipped upside down. Your seat belt was on but was cut by a shard of glass and you slipped your seatbelt. And cut your forehead on shards of glass that was on your roof one big one and multiple smaller ones. You also have a big old goose egg of a bump on your head where you get the steering wheel.
A car about 1,000 feet behind you saw your car crash and flipped. They stop next to your car to call 911. You're lucky they called when they did but while waiting for help your friend showed up cand came to the hospital with you. Your family is on their way. Along with your friend your family went to the airport to get your uncle who got the first flight out to come see you." Doc explained.
"Thank you doc. Can you send them here the moment they arrive?" I asked.
"Of course oh before I forget even though it is against hospital policy your friend is being you food." Doc said.
"Thank you doc." I said. He nodded and checked my vitals and left.
"I'll be back to check on you in an hour." Abigail smiles then left.
"Mio Dio, la mia nutrice è una dea e presto ti farò mia, amore mio." I said under my breath.
(My God, my nurse is a goddess and I will soon make you mine, my love.)
"Did you say something Mr. D'Angelo?" My nurse Abigail asked.
"Where is the TV remote?" I asked.
"Oh you probably wanna watch TV while you're here." Abigail said and walked back into the room and grabbed the remote off the small round table next to the bed and handed it to me. As I grabbed the remote our fingers touched and I felt a jolt of electricity flow thru me and we both shivered so I know she had the same effect I did as we touched.
She blushes and leaves the room saying she will be back in an hour.
I turned the TV on and turned on some car TV show. From the looks of it. It's Gas Monkey, one of my favorite car flipping shows.
It was a re-run but I didn't mind as I watched the show.
"Ehi capo, come ti senti?" Angelo, my best friend and right hand man asked.
(Hey boss, how are you feeling?)
"Soffro, ma la mia splendida infermiera mi ha dato un antidolorifico e sta facendo effetto, quindi in questo momento mi sento benissimo." I said.
(I'm in pain, but my wonderful nurse gave me a painkiller and it's working, so I feel great right now.)
"Beh, va bene, la medicina funziona. Ti ho portato una bella bistecca con purè di patate, sugo e piselli, oh, e la tua bibita preferita, la Pepsi alla ciliegia." Angelo said.
(Well, that's okay, the medicine works. I brought you a nice steak with mashed potatoes, gravy and peas, oh, and your favorite soda, cherry Pepsi.)
"Grazie." I said as he sat my food on the rolling table and pulled it up to me.
(Thank you.)
"Gas monkey?" Angelo asked.
"Hell yeah you know this is one of my favorite call flipping shows." I said.
"Mine too." Angelo said he sat at the light table to the left of my hospital room and ate his food and I dug into my food as well. He was kind enough to pour some A1 steak sauce on my steak and it had onions and mushrooms on it as well sweet!
"Your parents and uncle Luca will be here in 30 minutes." Angelo said and I nodded as my mouth was full of food and I was glued to the TV.
"Abigail you have a little visitor." I heard outside my open hospital room door.
I glanced out the door next to the TV and saw a different nurse with a little boy and I saw Abigail walk over to them.
"MOMMY!" The little girl said.
"Mikayla sweetheart, what are you doing here?" Abigail asked.
"The police dropped her off. Apparently the babysitter walked out while she was napping and has not been seen in a while. Mikayla was found by your neighbor screaming and crying. The neighbor said she saw Maggie leaving with some guy and has been gone for hours. She didn't think anything of it, thinking you were home until scream and cries were heard. She rushed over and saw she was the only wand in the house. She called the police and they found Maggie in a ditch died. About 5 minutes ago with a bullet to the head covered in blood cuts and burns and bruises." The nurse said to Abigail.
I looked at Angelo who had his fork with steak and mashed potatoes on it mid way to his mouth in shock at what we were hearing.
"Oh my god." Abigail said.
"Your neighbor said Maggie was all giggly and kissing the guy, when she left your place so we know she left willingly with the guy. But the morgue is doing a rape kit to see if the guy was onely looking for an easy,you know and then killed her after but we won't know till results come in." The nurse said to Abigail.
"Why would she leave my kid though?" Abigail asked.
"We don't know, the police are looking into that. Oh before I forget, the boss lady said Mikayla can stay for the rest of your shift and help you treat the patients. Her little nurse outfit we got her for Halloween is in your locker." The nurse said.
"Ok thank you Stacey. Come one Mikayla, let's get you changed." Abigail said and walked off with her daughter who was maybe 7 years old.
"Chiedi a Marko di indagare sulla sua morte. Voglio consegnarlo discretamente alla polizia." I said.
(Have Marko investigate his death. I want to hand it over discreetly to the police.)
"Su, capo." Angelo said and took his phone out and typed away.
(On it boss.)
A moment later Abigail came back to my room with Mikayla in a cute little nurse costume.
"Hello." Mikayla smiles as she carried a metal tray that has toy doctors stuff on it.
"Hello." I said as my Italian accent came out stronger than it did when Abigail was last here.
Abigail smiles at her daughter as she pulls a stool over and helps her daughter up onto it."
"How are you feeling?" Mikayla asked as she sat her dry down."
"I'm good, how are you nurse?" I asked.
"I'm well thank you. Ok I'm gonna give you a shot now. It might hurt." Mikayla said as she grabbed her toy needle and put it to my arm.
"Ow ow ow." I said playfully and Mikayla was a giggling mess. Then she got into the bed and moved to my knee with the toy nerve hammer thing in hand and taped my knee. I lightly kicked my feet and repeatedly said ow playfully. Mikayla's giggles were like music to my ears. The whole time Abigail did the real dressing on me, Mikayla was a giggling mess with my fake cries of pain.
"Ok mommy he is all better now." Mikayla said as she put her toys back on her trey.
"Ok sweetheart I'm almost done then we can go to the next patient." Abigail said.
What I didn't know was my parents and uncle were at the hospital door watching the scene unfold the whole time.
"Ok all done here. I'll be back in an hour for a dressing change again. The bleeding has slowed down a lot but there's still a lot of blood sweeping through with every movement you make. So try and keep the movement to a minimum." Abigail said.
"I'll dry my best too. bye little one have fun playing nurse." I said to both Abigail and Mikayla.
"Bye bye see you in an hour." Mikayla said as she waved and walked out with her tray of doctors toys and followed closely behind her mom.
"That was so damn cute." Mom gushed.
"You will make an amazing dad someday son. You have always been good with kids." Dad said.
"Thanks dad. I do wish to have kids of my own one day." I said.
"Have you found your queen yet?" Uncle asked.
"I think I have, she just doesn't know it yet." I said to my uncle.
"Who?" Mom asked excitedly.
"My nurse. Her name is Abigail and the little girl with her is her daughter Mikayla. But I don't know if she has a boyfriend, or if she is married or if the dad is still in the picture. Her daughter was being babysat but her babysitter stupidly left Mikayla alone in the house willingly leaving with some guy and was found dead. 15 minutes ago." I said.
"Oh my that poor little girl must have been traumatized." Mom said and I nodded.
"Shit. Kyler Max found another dog fighting ring. He wants to know if he should act now he says it's bad." Angelo said.
"Have him shut it down and have him get the injured dogs to the vet asap. And call our friends from pitbulls and parolees. They said they would help take the dogs in if we ever found more dogs." I said.
"I'll inform Max now." Angelo said.
"Good. I hate dog fights. No dog should go through that kind of terama." I said.
I own my own animal rescue for all the dogs that are found in dog fights or in any bad shape. Currently my kennels are full and I have animals looking for a new home. I bought a farm to save animals and any animal that is neglected gets nursed back to health and find a new forever home. I do background checks for each adoption of said animal getting adopted. I wanna make sure they get a good forever home.
I am a cowboy that's a mafia boss. Even though I feared and have enemies. Enemies oddly enough contact me from time to time when an animal in bad shape is found. They have a love for animals and know I will take any animal in to nurse back to health and find them a new home. That's the only thing my enemies will call me for and not wanna kill me over. We have in common with outside the mafia world. But mafia related stuff gloves are off.
Even though when my enemies come with animals in need of help we are always on our toes to make sure nothing bad happens. But they always leave the moment the animal is in our care. Which is a good thing.
"Mommy, can we get a dog." I heard Mikayla as she and her mom walked by.
"I don't know sweetheart, we don't have the space for a pet right now. Maybe when we get a bigger house we can. Mommy is saving money so we can get a bigger home. Plus we live in a 2 bedroom apartment and the landlord doesn't allow pets." Abigail said.
"If we move we can get a dog?" Mikayla asked.
"We can but that's if we move sweetheart." Abigail said.
"Ok mommy." Mikayla said.
"Aww that's so sweet she wants a dog." Mom said.
"It is." I said.
Just as I said that Marko walked in with a file and his laptop.
"Capo. I got the information you asked for. I also found a video feed of the girl in question." I thought you'd like to see them before I send them off to the police station." Marko said.
"Ah you know me so well." I said.
He handed me the file and he set up the laptop but to my surprise I got 2 other files one on Abigail and one on Mikayla.
"Hide these 2 they literally will be here in 35 minutes to change my dressing on my wounds they don't need to see that." I said handing my dad the files on my girls. I don't wanna look at them, I really wanna get to know them on my own. Not threw a file.
"From the look on your face you wanna get to know them on a personal level not by paper." Uncle said.
"I do if something is hidden under why she is a single mom I want her to tell me. I don't wanna find out through a background check on my girls. I wanna get to know them on their terms, not mine." I said.
"Understandable." Uncle said and I nodded and opened Maggie's file.
"Damn this girl has a history of leaving children when they nap to get a quickie and never return when she feels the need to scratch an itch." I said and then looked at her crime record.
"Ah ok so she stole from a gang leader no wonder why she was killed. She stole money and drugs from one of the local gangs. There is proof of her breaking into their warehouses doing so." I said just as my uncle closed the door.
"There are videos of her stealing and one of her death." Max said pushing the laptop to me on the table I looked up and he pressed play.
There were 6 videos of Maggie stealing money and drugs. From the same warehouse then the last visit showed the girl getting beaten by 6 men then they raped her all 6 nutted in her then shot her once finished.
"Well they used her need to scratch an itch to lurer her out to kill her for stealing." I said and looked back at her file.
"Says here her brother is a gang leader and she was stealing his rivals shipment and the cash for newer ships. Shit a war is gonna happen with 2 of our local gangs the tyrants killed vipers princess." I said.
"Well the vipers brought it upon themselves." Dad said.
"That's true. But my girls live in viper territory not on the bad side of town but in the middle class section." I said.
"It says here the address and apartment number she babysits at along with my girls names." I added.
"Well shit that could end bad." Uncle said.
"It could. Angelo I want men stationed around the apartment complex at this address. I want my girls protected." I said handing him the file.
"I'll get some men over there now." Angelo said.
"Max, before you leave, can you hack the hospital's database to get my girls schedule? The woman this Maggie babysat for is my queen, your Donna. I want Abigail and her daughter protected when she is not working.
Abigail is protected here. This hospital has society roaming around plus police coming and going for cases. Mikayla I want 2 bodyguards on her when she is at school. I want them to blend in and my princess is to not be harmed along with my queen." I ordered.
"I'll get on that now." Max said and I nodded.
"Hide that file, my girls will be here any minute." I whisper yelled.
Max snatched the file from Angelo and hid the file under his laptop.
A few seconds later my girls walked in and Abigail had a step stool with her this time.
"Hello again." Mikayla smiled wildly with her tray of doctor's tools.
"Hi little one." I smiled at her kindly.
Just as the step stool was placed next to me Maxs laptop went off.
"Marko messaged me through email." Max said.
"What did he say about the dog rescue?" I asked.
"All dogs are safe and the people who organized the dog fight are now in jail." Max said, making Abigail gasp.
"I heard rumors of dog fights. I never thought they were real." Abigail said.
"They are really alright my boys and I look for dog fighting rings all over the world to save dogs. From going through that. We also save other neglected animals. We own a farm we run our rescue center from. But we do everything we can to nurse them back to health, give them love and when they are healthy and ready enough we look for forever homes for them." I said
"Oh that's wonderful that you save animals. I wish the world had more people like you guys saving animals. And giving them a second chance." Abigail said.
"We do our best to save the animals and give them a forever home." I said.
"That's awesome
" Abigail said that and then I felt a plastic needle being placed on me and my fake ow's beginning making Mikayla a giggling mess.
"Mikayla has been looking forward to coming back into this room. The other patients I look after today did interact with her like you are. Some of them didn't even want her in the room." Abigail said.
"That's just rude. I love kids. If one wants to play doctor I'm done I'd do anything to put a smile on their face and make them laugh.
I one day wish to have kids of my own. But if a woman I'm into happens to have a kid of her own I'd gladly be a father figure to him or her. And hopefully one day add onto that already made family." I remember.
"Oh that is the sweetest thing I ever heard." Abigail said as she finished changing my bandages.
"You will make some woman very lucky if she is a single mom or not." Just as Abigail said that I felt a weight laying on my good side of my chest and the tiniest of snores. We all looked down. Saw Mikayla laying on my chest fast asleep.
"Shot. I'm sorry, let me take her to the sleep barracks." Mikayla said.
"No, she is fine. We will keep an eye on her. You can peek in through the door to make sure she is safe. Throw out your shift. It will be better than her roaming the hospital looking for you when she wakes. We can hit the nurses button if she needs you." "Are you sure? You probably need to rest yourself. It's almost nine at night. Oh, which reminds me, visiting hours are up." Abigail said.
"I'm sure. And I'm sure my mom over there isn't gonna leave anytime soon with me being here. She is a worry wart so she will most likely be here, making sure I'm getting enough sleep and that I stay here seeing as I hate hospitals with a passion." I said.
Alright if you're sure. I'll let her be here and peek in and throw out the rest of my shift." Abigail said.
"She is fine sweetheart. I'll be right here all night. Does she have a bear she sleeps with. Oh and can I have a cot or another bed to lay on?' Mom said.
"Oh she does it's in my locker I'll go get it thank you. And this couch has a pull out bed in it." Abigail said and dashed out of my hospital room.
A moment later she came back with a pillow, blanket, bed sheet and bear. My dad took the bedding and then Abigail sat the bear in her daughter's arms and got back to work.
