"⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (Let’s be honest, I was ready to give it six if the shifter-horse logistics were addressed) This book had me at “mail-order bride” and kept me there with “emotionally scarred cowboy werewolf with brother issues.” Yes. You read that right. Cowboy. Werewolf. Brother’s bride. We are in angst royale™ territory, darling, and I am thriving. 💥 The Premise (aka why my brain refused to sleep until I finished this thing): Briony Starweaver (yes, her name is straight out of a fantasy romance generator and I love her more for it) shows up in Texas expecting to marry one hot alpha, Chase Moonshadow. Instead, she gets picked up by his war-damaged, emotionally-walled-off younger brother, Wade—aka “the broken beta,” aka “hello, emotional damage kink.” You already know where this is going. But trust me—the journey matters. This isn’t just a love triangle in leather boots. This is a three-week frontier trek with suppressed feelings, trauma flashbacks, character growth, longing stares under starlit skies, and one bedroll. Oh, and technically they’re werewolves. I say “technically” because the wolf part is about as crucial to the plot as cowboy hats are to actual cattle herding. Nice aesthetic, rarely necessary. 🐺 Let’s Talk Shifters (or... not?): Look. I'm not gonna lie. I spent a non-zero amount of time screaming internally: Why are y’all shifters?! You don’t shift. You don’t sniff each other. There’s no moon-based drama. You work with horses—which, let’s be honest, any sane wolf would spook the shit out of those animals. That said… this isn’t a “shifter romance.” This is a frontier historical with claws lightly filed down. The wolf stuff is flavor. Atmosphere. A whiff of supernatural spice on a gorgeously slow-burn stew. Would I have still loved it if they were just emotionally constipated human cowboys? Yes. Would I love it more if Wade accidentally shifted during a vulnerable moment and Briony accepted him with a forehead press and a scratch behind the ears? Also yes. Am I writing that fanfic now? Maybe. 💔 Trauma, Guilt & Emotional Cuddling: This book nails the “I’m too broken to be loved but oh gods I want her to love me anyway” trope, and I am WEAK for it. Wade is the kind of wounded that makes you want to wrap him in a blanket, hand him coffee, and threaten anyone who looks at him wrong. He’s the walking embodiment of survivor’s guilt and repression. Briony? Southern resilience wrapped in soft lace and steel. She sees him—scars, pain, and all. Their romance is slow-burn with seasoning. Think: smoldering glances, shared silences, emotional intimacy before the physical. The yearning is real. There’s also a rich layer of brotherly tension, grief, and the kind of family trauma that begs for sequels. Yes. Plural. Feed me, Lost_in_love. 🧵 World & Writing: It’s giving “Little House on the Prairie” but the house has emotional landmines and the prairie wants to kill you. The prose is warm and immersive. You feel the dust, the cold nights, the ache of the saddle and the tightness in Wade’s chest when Briony so much as smiles. Is it perfect? No. Some POV transitions were abrupt, and the wolf lore could’ve been integrated more deeply. But was I sobbing by chapter 50 and totally okay with it? Abso-freakin-lutely. ⚖️ Final Verdict: A tender, emotional western slow-burn with a paranormal sprinkle and a big, wounded heart. ✨ Recommend if you love: Emotionally wounded cinnamon-roll cowboys Quiet strength in female leads Forced proximity on dangerous trails The “he loves her but she was promised to someone else” trope Books that aren’t afraid to get real about trauma but still offer healing 🔮 Skip it if you’re here for full-shift wolf action. Go read something with more fur and fewer campfires. Would I recommend it? Yes. Would I reread it under a blanket, with hot cocoa, while whispering “it’s okay Wade, she loves you”? Also yes."
