Chapter One

I breathe deeply, letting the crisp air of Gravewick fill my lungs. There’s a certain magic in the air here, a blend of earthy pine and an undercurrent of something more primal, more raw. My fingers grip the steering wheel as I navigate the narrow, winding road leading to our new apartment complex. Hudson sits beside me, his presence a comforting anchor.

“This is it,” he whispers, his voice tinged with excitement. His ginger hair catches the sunlight streaming through the car window, making it appear like a halo of fiery light. He turns to me, his blue eyes filled with warmth. “Our new home.”

I smile, the corner of my lips curving up in a way that I know crinkles my nose. “Yeah, our new home,” I echo, feeling the weight of those words settle into my bones. Gravewick, a town known for its inclusivity between wolf shifters and humans. A place where I hope to find the balance I’ve been searching for my entire life.

We pull into the parking lot of the secluded apartment complex. It’s quaint, surrounded by tall trees that offer a sense of privacy and tranquility. As we step out of the car, the reality of our decision hits me. This is a fresh start, a chance to embrace my wolf side while building a future with Hudson.

“Ready to do this?” Hudson asks, his hand reaching for mine. I nod, squeezing his hand in reassurance. Together, we begin unloading the car, carrying boxes filled with our life into our new apartment.

The place is small but cozy. A perfect blend of modern comfort and rustic charm. We spend the next few hours unpacking, settling into our new space. Hudson hums a tune as he arranges the kitchen, and I find myself getting lost in the rhythm of organizing our bedroom.

“Hey, check this out,” Hudson calls from the living room. I walk over to find him holding a picture frame. It’s a photo of us from last summer, taken just after he proposed. The memory brings a smile to my face.

“That was a good day,” I say, leaning in to kiss him. Our lips meet, soft and familiar, and for a moment, everything else fades away. He pulls me into a warm embrace. His arms were the only home I would ever need. Hudson has always been easy. He always felt right. Perhaps everything else in my life felt out of place, but not Hudson. Not this kiss.

Just as our kiss deepens, a knock on the door breaks the moment. He lets out a groan, pulling me closer, which makes me laugh. We pull apart, exchanging curious glances.

“Can’t we just… ignore it?” His eyes travel to my lips, probably swollen by the kiss we just shared. I shake my head.

“I’ll get it,” I say, moving towards the door. When I open it, I’m greeted by a petite girl with dark hair and striking green eyes.

“Hi, you must be Gaia,” she says with a bright smile. “I’m Mia Stone, secretary of the Gravewick wolf pack. Welcome to the neighborhood!”

“Hi, Mia,” I reply, a bit taken aback but pleased by the warm welcome. “This is Hudson,” I say, gesturing to my fiancé. Fiancé! It still feels surreal to even think about it. Hudson stands behind me, resting his chin on my shoulder.

“Nice to meet you, Hudson,” Mia says, her smile unwavering. “The pack is having a gathering tonight, a sort of welcome party for you, Gaia. We’d love for both of you to join us.”

My heart skips a beat. “A welcome party? That sounds great. Thank you for the invitation.”

Mia nods, her eyes gleaming with excitement. “We’ve been looking forward to meeting you ever since you applied to join the pack. It’s not often we get someone with your unique background. Our inclusive system is something we take pride in, and having humans in our community is a big part of that.”

I glance at Hudson, feeling a surge of gratitude and hope. This could be the place where we belong, where I can embrace both my human upbringing and my wolf heritage. “We’ll be there,” I say, feeling a mixture of nerves and anticipation.

“Great! I’ll send someone to pick you up around seven,” Mia says, giving us one last friendly smile before she heads off.

As the door closes, Hudson wraps his arms around me from behind. “Looks like tonight’s going to be interesting,” he murmurs, his breath warm against my ear.

“Yeah,” I agree, leaning back into his embrace. “It’s a chance to start fresh. I think this place could really be home for us.”

“Well, in the meantime, I could think of a thing or two we could do to spend the time,” He presses soft kisses to the side of my neck.

I giggle. “Like finish unpacking?”

“Like making use of that enormous bed we just bought,” he pulls me off my feet, throwing me over his shoulder. I let out a squeak and laugh as he walks back to the bedroom.

This is definitely home.

The hours fly by as we prepare for the party. I choose a simple yet elegant dress, something that makes me feel confident. My mother gifted it to me before she passed away and it’s been one of my favorite dresses to wear. Sometimes my father would look at me wearing it and say I looked just like mom when she was young. I took pride in that. Hudson, ever the dapper dresser, looks effortlessly handsome in his button-up shirt and slacks.

At seven sharp, a sleek black car pulls up in front of our complex. The driver, a polite young man named Aaron, opens the door for us. The ride to the ballroom is smooth, and I find myself relaxing into the plush leather seats, Hudson’s hand intertwined with mine.

“Nervous?” Hudson draws circles into my skin with his thumb. It’s a gesture that’s always helped me relax.

“A little, but who wouldn’t be,” I shrug. We’re about to dive straight into the pack community. I’ve been the new girl and the strange girl quite a few times. Being raised by humans, I’m not sure how the rest of the pack will take it. What they will think of me.

“You’ll be alright,” he says with a warm smile. It’s almost as if he can read my mind. “Don’t forget I’ll be there to support you.”

“Thank you,” I say, leaning in to kiss his lips gently.

The ballroom is grander than I expected. Crystal chandeliers hang from the ceiling, casting a warm, inviting glow over the room. People mill about, chatting and laughing. There’s a sense of camaraderie in the air, a feeling of belonging that makes my heart swell.

As we step inside, Mia appears by our side, introducing us to various pack members. Everyone is welcoming, their smiles genuine. I sip on champagne, savoring the taste as I exchange pleasantries with the pack. Hudson stays close, his presence a constant source of comfort.

The party hums with a vibrant energy, the soft clinking of glasses and the murmur of conversation creating a pleasant backdrop. Hudson and I are mingling near the buffet table, enjoying the exquisite spread of hors d’oeuvres. I pop a stuffed mushroom into my mouth, savoring the burst of flavor, when a tall, impeccably dressed man approaches us.

“Gaia, Hudson, welcome,” he says, his voice smooth and warm. “I’m Luke Hayes, the Alpha’s right hand.”

He extends his hand, and Hudson shakes it firmly. “Nice to meet you, Luke,” Hudson replies, his smile genuine.

I take Luke’s hand next, and he gives me a charming smile, his eyes twinkling with a mix of mischief and warmth. “It’s a pleasure to finally meet you both. I’ve heard a lot about you, Gaia. The pack is thrilled to have you.”

“Thank you,” I say, feeling a bit shy under his intense gaze. “Everyone has been so welcoming.”

Luke chuckles, a rich sound that makes me feel at ease. “That’s what we strive for. We’re a community here, a family.”

As we chat, Mia joins our little group, her smile slightly strained. “I see you’ve met Luke,” she says, her tone polite but cool.

“Mia,” Luke acknowledges, his smile never wavering. “Always a pleasure.”

Mia’s lips tighten, and I can sense the tension between them. “Yes, always,” she replies, her voice flat.

Sensing the awkwardness, I try to change the subject. “So, Luke, how long have you been with the pack?”

“Since I was a pup,” he says, his eyes crinkling at the corners as he smiles. “My family has been part of this pack for generations. It’s home.”

Hudson chimes in, “It must be great to have such deep roots in a place like this.”

“It is,” Luke agrees, his gaze shifting to Mia for a brief moment. “Mia and I go way back. We were... close once.”

Mia stiffens, and I notice the flicker of pain in her eyes before she masks it. “Yes, we were,” she says curtly.

Luke sighs, a hint of regret in his eyes. “But that’s ancient history. What’s important now is making sure Gaia and Hudson feel at home here.”

Hudson smiles, giving Mia a reassuring look. “We already do, thanks to everyone’s hospitality.”

Luke grins, the tension easing slightly. “That’s good to hear. If you ever need anything, don’t hesitate to reach out. We look out for each other here.”

“Thank you, Luke,” I say, genuinely touched by his sincerity. “We appreciate it.”

“Enjoy the rest of the evening,” Luke says, giving us a small nod before he moves on to greet other guests.

As he walks away, I turn to Mia, who looks visibly relieved. “You okay?” I ask softly.

Mia forces a smile, though it doesn’t quite reach her eyes. “Yeah, I’m fine. Just... old memories.”

I nod, understanding that there’s more to the story but respecting her privacy. “If you ever want to talk, I’m here.”

“Thanks, Gaia,” she says, her smile softening a bit. “I might take you up on that.”

“Care for a dance?” Hudson asks, extending his hand towards me.

I place my hand in his, letting him lead me to the dance floor, shooting one last smile at Mia. The music is soft and melodic, and we move together with ease. As we dance, Hudson leans in, his lips brushing against my ear. “This feels right, doesn’t it?”

“Yes,” I whisper back, my heart full. “It really does.”

The night continues in a blur of laughter and conversation. I meet people from different hierarchies within the pack, each one more fascinating than the last. It’s clear that the pack resonates deeply with me.

Just as I’m starting to feel completely at ease, the atmosphere in the room shifts. A hush falls over the crowd, and I turn to see the source of the change. I hear soft murmurs as people closer to us start to notice what’s happening. He’s here? Oh my God! I catch a glimpse of the person making all this commotion and I don’t have to see much of him to know who he is.

Lex Miller, the alpha of the pack, has arrived.

I heard a lot about him during my application process, however I never spoke to him directly. I was told he approved my application personally. I’m here thanks to him. Hudson and I move closer to the edge of the group to get a better look.

He’s tall, dark, and undeniably handsome. His presence commands attention, a magnetic pull that’s impossible to ignore. As he makes his way towards the center of the room, his eyes scan the crowd. When they land on me, I feel a jolt of recognition, a connection I can’t quite explain.

Before I can fully process what’s happening, Lex strides towards me with purpose. In a heartbeat, he’s in front of me, his gaze intense and unwavering.

“Gaia,” he says, his voice a deep, resonant timbre. “You’re mine.”

My breath catches in my throat as he yanks me out of Hudson’s arms. The world seems to tilt on its axis, everything I thought I knew thrown into chaos.

“I’m your mate,” Lex declares, his grip on my arm firm but not painful. “And I won’t let you go.”

The room around us feels like it’s spinning. I glance at Hudson, his face a mask of shock and confusion. My heart races, torn between what I’ve always known and this information being thrown at me so quickly.

In that moment, everything changes. My future, once so clear, is now a tangle of uncertainty and longing. The path ahead is unknown, but one thing is certain: my life will never be the same.…
