Chapter 1: New Beginnings
Ava Reynolds stared out the window of her father’s car as they drove through the gates of Blackwood Academy. The pristine lawns and towering buildings of the prestigious private school seemed to stretch endlessly, a stark contrast to the rundown neighborhoods she’d grown up in. It was her first day at this new school, and she already felt out of place.
Her father, Robert, kept glancing at her from the driver’s seat. “You’ll be fine, Ava. This is a fresh start for both of us.”
Ava nodded, but didn’t reply. She wasn’t sure how to feel about living with a man she barely knew. For most of her life, it had just been her and her mom, scraping by as best they could. But when her mom had passed away suddenly, Robert had come back into her life, insisting she move in with him.
The car stopped in front of the imposing main building. Students were milling about, all dressed in expensive-looking uniforms. Ava took a deep breath and stepped out, adjusting her plain black backpack on her shoulder.
As she made her way towards the entrance, she could feel eyes on her, sizing her up. She kept her gaze straight ahead, determined not to let the whispers and stares get to her.
But then she heard the unmistakable sound of a motorcycle engine revving loudly. The students parted like the Red Sea as a sleek, black bike roared onto the scene, its rider clad in a leather jacket and dark sunglasses. The bike came to a stop right in front of her, and the rider removed his helmet with a practiced ease, revealing tousled dark hair and a smirk that could melt steel.
“Hey, new girl,” he called out, his voice dripping with arrogance. “You lost?”
Ava looked up into the strikingly blue eyes of Liam Blackwood, the school’s resident playboy and heir to the Blackwood fortune. She had heard of him, of course—everyone had. He was practically royalty around here.
“I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be,” Ava replied coolly, refusing to be intimidated.
Liam’s smirk widened, clearly amused by her defiance. “We’ll see about that,” he said, before revving his bike again and speeding off, leaving a trail of dust in his wake.
Ava shook her head, annoyed. She wasn’t going to let some rich boy get under her skin. She had bigger things to worry about—like surviving her first day at a school where she clearly didn’t belong.
