Soul Survivors: Book 1 (EXCERPT)

Summary

Secret lovers Emmalee and Niko dream of a quiet life, but they're born into a paramilitary cult-a violent patriarchy that breeds children as weapons-for-hire-and they hate it. If they dissent, they die, and their parents are brainwashed leadership. Expectations are high for Niko, the son of cult executioners, and his dissociative PTSD sells his emotionless killer image. But Emmalee's empathic sixth sense knows Niko's truth; he's actually a crybaby who hates violence. Similarly, the cult deems Emmalee useless due to her chronic illness, but Niko knows she's the lion-hearted leader the world needs. To prove her worth to the ableist world, Emmalee sabotages a cult superior's deadly drug trial. Except Emmalee doesn't know Niko's darkest secret; the cult superior is also Niko's sexual abuser. When Niko's abuser threatens not only them, but the entire nation with a dimension-altering experiment, Emmalee and Niko have to end the abuse cycle that imprisons the US without losing their lives-or each other. With edge-of-your-seat suspense and prevailing love, Soul Survivors is Book 1 of a psychological thriller series following two survivors' journeys to escape a paramilitary nightmare. Content Advisory

Author's Note:

I believe survivors.

Survivors’ stories are often overlooked, and to add to survivors’ trauma, perpetrators are often glorified or used as a tool to perpetuate ableism against those with mental health conditions. The terrible irony is that many survivors are disabled, possibly even by their perpetrator’s abuse. Far too often, survivors are also the only ones to face the ramifications of the trauma their perpetrators forced upon them.

I’ve written Soul Survivors to showcase survivor perspectives, highlighting their emotions, challenges, and lived experiences in managing the consequences of trauma. Topics arise that may be difficult for some to read.

Please take care of yourself with the following in mind: Soul Survivors contains topics of war, abuse, PTSD, cults, pregnancy, miscarriage, and chronic illness. While acts of sexual abuse are never “shown,” survivors’ resulting feelings and trauma’s physical consequences are discussed.

If you or someone you know is struggling through the impacts of trauma, there are those of us out there willing to witness your truths. Please seek the care you deserve, as you matter immensely to me and your loved ones. Unsure where to start your search for support? Feel free to visit my website (riverkaiart.com/soulsurvivors/content-advisory) for a list of mental health resources.

One final note: oppression harms everyone. I stand with survivors, and I refuse to look the other way.

And since it can’t be said enough times, and I imagine you may need to hear it from someone again…

I believe you.

The Luna He Threw Away

dimensions58: A truly wonderful tale filled with action and a closeness that wasn't wrapped in sex. An amazing story line that kept interest and moved well. It didn't stagnate with what the other side was doing but kept the focus on the hero and heroine. Congratulations.

Sharda: This reads like if it's the author's first book. There were a lot of missing things to make the story feel real. I appreciated the good grammar and the storyline was good. It just needed some more, the book felt a bit rushed.

SECRET BILLIONAIRE

W_Skye: The secret-identity premise has real hooks, and the pacing kept me turning chapters (too quickly). What I'd have loved most is more depth in the prose itself, more scenes, more sensory grounding, a bit less telling me what's at stake and a bit more letting me feel it. The bones of a much richer and ...
