The curse
Manis, Powers you don’t want?
From the moment I was born, I was cursed. I was cursed with a strange power, that felt like poison.
My parents were the ones keeping me in Schack. But my powers were getting quite strong. I needed help to control my powers. What I didn’t expect was that I needed to use them concisely in order to learn how to control them.
So, what are my powers then? I can summon ghosts and monsters from the other side. Or not the other side really. I summon those creatures that is stuck in the middle between life and death. I am 15 years old now. But I was six at the time where my parents tried to find someone to help me with my “gift”. Since I was suffering from it. They didn’t manage to find someone so I had to endure countless of nightmares where my parents had to wake me up while I was releasing bad spirits. And if I got happy or upset, it could happen too. I simply had to contain my feelings and emotions to a minimum.
It wasn’t until that I was ten years old, when I found the one person to teach me. I went to some kind of academy. Not knowing if I would learn how to control my powers or not. I had to enter there since I would become too dangerous to myself and others if my powers continued to grow, without me having any chance to do anything about it.
My name is Winston Manis, and this is my “story”.
As I said, it was quite hard for my parents to find me someone to teach me. So, when they found out about this academy, they got really happy. I found it quite pleasant too. Since my parents didn’t want me to get hurt when I released the spirits, in order to protect me, my father worked on the day and my mother on the night. There was always someone watching me. It made me feel bad, even if I knew I couldn’t control it. I would always get nosebleed and become really sick if it went too far. Since I usually had my “seizures” during night, my dad watched over me and didn’t get so much sleep.
On the nights, I sometimes woke up watching him sleep next to me on a chair with his head resting on my bed. I would always make room for him so that I wouldn’t accidently roll over his dark hair and wake him up, even if it was quite short. I did also make sure that he didn’t have his rektangular glasses on while he slept.
I was quite scared on the nights. I didn’t want to release something bad, or hurt anyone that I loved. Most of the time I would get woken up by my dad that helped me take the spirits “back”. He learned quite early how to sense when the powers would get activated. One time however, he didn’t sense it. Me neither. He rushed to me and held me while I was screaming in pain. Blood was running from my ears and nose. My body cramped.
He managed to help me get the spirits back but it felt like spikes going through my body. The last spirit did hurt my father quite badly, he still has a scar on his right cheek that looks as if he had gotten burned. On the days, my mother watched over me. Since I couldn’t play and have fun like other kids, she told me stories. Telling me stories set my fantasy on fire. But for some reason it didn’t activate my powers. She calmed be down, sitting there with me day out and day in. She had long blond hair, that sometimes accidently got on my shoulder and tickled me.
