Chapter 1 The Darkness of Desperation

I was once a happy kid, living comfortably with my family. My father had a good job, and we had everything we needed. But everything changed when his gambling problem spiraled out of control. Our financial stability crumbled, and my mom struggled to keep up with the bills. Her exhausting nights left her barely able to manage the household, and our clothes became worn and threadbare. I went from having it all to barely scraping by, and it was heartbreaking.

One night, overwhelmed and desperate, I fell to my knees in my room, my head bowed in prayer. “Whoever is listening right now, I give myself up. Please help me. Please.” I cried, my hope fading with each tear, convinced no one would hear me.

While taking out the trash, I noticed a man walking toward me down the street. It was unusually dark, with only one streetlight flickering—strange, since the lights were usually on and bright.

I kept my head down so the man couldn’t see the tears streaming down my cheeks like raindrops sliding down a window. When I was about to throw the trash bag into the dumpster, I accidentally bumped into him. “Sorry,” I mumbled, sniffling, and tried to walk past. The mysterious man grabbed my shoulder, his head tilted at an angle, and said, “What’s troubling you, kid?”

I told him, “My family and I are in need of money. My clothes are barely hanging on by a thread. I see other kids in the neighborhood with nice clothes, bikes, and the latest consoles. I just want a lifestyle like that again.”

“Hmm. I see. That’s what’s troubling you. How about this: I’ll make a deal with you. Say a few words, and the deal is yours,” he proposed.

“Sure. Anything, sir,” I replied, desperate for any solution.

“Say these words: ‘I submit my soul as an offering,’” he instructed.

“I submit my soul as an offering,” I repeated.

The man extended his hand. “Let’s seal it with a handshake.”

We shook hands as if closing a business deal.

“Excellent,” he said with a chilling grin. “You’ve just given up your soul.”

“What now, sir?” I asked, fear creeping into my voice.

The man’s grin grew darker. “You see, little boy, I once had it all. I was a trusted aide to someone immensely powerful. But everything changed when I betrayed him. I lost everything, and my life plunged into darkness. Now, I offer a hand to those in desperate need, just as you are.”

His face twisted into an evil smirk as he turned to leave. A shadowy tail seemed to trail behind him, though it was hard to discern in the darkness.

As he looked back with a malevolent smile and said, “Goodbye, Jimmy boy. In 11 years, I will return to collect,” I stood there, stunned and bewildered. Suddenly, all the streetlights flickered on, casting a harsh light on the empty street.
