A Flicker of Magic

Fourteen-year-old Lila Reed was used to the ordinary rhythms of life in Elaris—a city of bustling streets and endless rows of shops and cafes. Her days were spent in school, and her evenings were filled with homework and chores. But on a crisp autumn evening, everything changed.

As Lila walked home from the library, she noticed a peculiar streetlamp flickering erratically. Frustrated by its inconsistency, she muttered, “Why can’t this thing just stay lit?” Without realizing it, she reached out with her hand, and to her astonishment, the lamp blazed into a bright, steady light. She pulled her hand back, her heart racing. Could she have...?

Her confusion deepened when an elegant, elderly man in a dark blue robe approached her. He had a sharp, yet kind, gaze and a long, silver beard that seemed to shimmer under the streetlamp’s glow.

“Miss Reed?” he asked gently. “I am Professor Thorne. I believe we need to talk.”
