The Forgotten Reflection
Sophie had never liked the attic. It was always cold, damp, and filled with forgotten things her family no longer wanted. But today, curiosity got the better of her. Her parents had gone out, and she needed something—anything—to distract her from the boredom of the summer.
Creaking open the door to the attic, Sophie stepped inside. Dust danced in the streams of sunlight breaking through the small windows. She wandered through the clutter, her fingers trailing over old furniture and boxes labeled with dates older than she was. Then something strange caught her eye.
In the corner, half-covered by an old cloth, stood a tall, ornate mirror. Its frame was made of dark wood, intricately carved with patterns of vines and birds that seemed to twist around each other. But what made Sophie pause wasn’t the mirror’s beauty—it was the reflection.
Despite the room being dim and filled with dust, the mirror showed an image that was sharp and clear, almost too perfect. She stared at her own reflection and noticed something odd: in the mirror, her hair was neatly combed, though she hadn’t brushed it in hours. Her clothes looked newer, more vibrant than they did in real life. And then, the strangest thing happened.
The reflection smiled.
Sophie hadn’t smiled. Her heart pounded in her chest, and she stepped back, but the reflection didn’t follow. It stayed there, still smiling, staring right back at her.
Before she could react, a voice, faint and distant, whispered from the mirror.
“Come closer.”
Sophie froze. The attic felt even colder now, her breath turning shallow. The reflection tilted its head, still grinning.
“Come closer, Sophie.”
How did it know her name?
Her mind screamed to run, but her feet didn’t move. Instead, she took a slow step forward. Then another. As she reached out toward the glass, her fingers brushed the cold surface. Suddenly, the mirror rippled, like a pond disturbed by a pebble, and before she could pull away, a powerful force yanked her through.
Sophie tumbled forward, crashing into a room. It looked just like the attic, but the air was warmer, the dust was gone, and everything looked newer. She turned to look at the mirror behind her—but it wasn’t a mirror anymore. It was a door.
And standing in front of her was her reflection. But it wasn’t her anymore.
“I’ve been waiting for you,” the reflection said, stepping closer. “It’s my turn now.”
