John Gray.
The desert canyon shuddered as John and Aerius faced off, the air thickening with tension. Sunbeams slashed across the rocky terrain, casting jagged shadows behind boulders and scattered stones. The trunks of long-forgotten trees stood like sentinels, their twisted limbs outstretched as if frozen in a silent scream. The wind stirred, carrying the acrid tang of smoke and the haunting cries of desert birds. Sand swirled beneath foot, a restless whisper that echoed the turmoil brewing between the two enemies. At the center of this unforgiving landscape, the ancient stone monolith towered, its petroglyphs seeming to writhe like living flames as John's pyrokinetic powers ignited the air. Aerius's wings burst into motion, his feathers a blur as he looked fiercely at John.
John stood tall, his fists clenched and ready, his eyes burning with a fierce determination. His comm crackled to life, the voice on the other end announcing, "Alive bid is estimatingly 100,000 zeniths." A slow smile spread across John's face as he thought to himself, He's going to get that new game now, and probably pay his rent. Just have to finish this first. The thought was a brief moment of levity, but it steeled his resolve. With a fierce cry, John declared his attack, "Divergence Fist!" As he spoke, flames erupted around his fists, crackling with energy. Aerius's wings fluttered at an incredible pace, generating a whirlwind of air as he prepared for an attack. Meanwhile, John launched himself into the air, his fist igniting with a fierce blaze as he unleashed a massive fire wave. Aerius dodged the inferno with ease, his agility belied by his powerful wings. He let out a growl, the sound lost in the rush of wind as he soared higher into the sky. His wings beat with a powerful cadence, gaining altitude with each stroke. John pursued Aerius with unwavering determination, his eyes fixed on his opponent as he sought to close the distance. But Aerius, confident in his superior height, unleashed a sonic cry aimed directly at John. The intense sound wave shattered John's eardrums and comms, causing blood to gush out from his ears. The painful assault left John reeling, his senses disoriented by the cacophony. Aerius observed John's struggle with a calculating gaze, his expression unreadable as he assessed his opponent's vulnerability. As John stumbled, momentarily stunned, Aerius seized the opportunity to strike with ruthless efficiency. He dove down at incredible speed, his talons extended like deadly spears, and slammed into John with precision. The impact was tremendous, generating a massive shockwave that sent debris flying everywhere. The ground trembled beneath them, and a large crater formed around John's prone form, a testament to the force of Aerius's attack. Dust and rocks erupted into the air, obscuring the area in a choking cloud of debris. Aerius hovered above, his wings beating fiercely as he gazed down at his opponent with a fierce intensity, his eyes burning with a fierce inner light. John, dazed and disoriented, struggled to comprehend the magnitude of the blow, his mind reeling from the shock. Meanwhile, Aerius assessed the damage, his gaze lingering on John's prone form as he weighed his next move.Upon impact, John's senses snapped into focus, his mind racing as he reeled from the pain of the fall. Aerius still floated in the sky, his gaze fixed intently on John, his eyes burning with a fierce inner light. But John's healing factor had already kicked in, his body rapidly mending the wounds inflicted by the brutal attack. With a fierce cry, John launched himself into the skies once more, his speed surpassing his previous velocity. In a swift and deadly motion, he closed the distance between himself and Aerius, his hand shooting out to grasp Aerius's face. With incredible force, John slammed Aerius's face into a nearby rock, the impact causing cracks to spiderweb across the surface. Aerius's eyes widened in shock as his head recoiled from the blow, his wings faltering for a moment before he regained his composure. John's eyes blazed with a fierce determination. John's eyes blazed with intense heat as he unleashed his heat vision, the beams shooting out from his eyes like fiery spears. The precision attack ultimately severed Aerius's wings, leaving him crippled and helpless. Aerius's anguished yell echoed through the air as he lashed out in pain, his fist connecting with John's face in a powerful blow. The impact sent John stumbling backwards, but he quickly regained his composure. Meanwhile, Aerius crashed to the ground, his gaze fixed in horror as his feathers drifted away, a poignant reminder of his lost wings. John seized the opportunity, flying forward with incredible speed and catching Aerius in a crushing grip. With a single, mighty swing, John sent Aerius crashing across the rocks, the impact sending shockwaves through the ground. Rocks shattered, and dust erupted into the air, obscuring the scene. As the dust settled, John soared into the sky, his arms outstretched as he held the defeated Aerius aloft, a symbol of his triump John descended to the ground with graceful ease, his movements fluid and controlled. He knelt beside Aerius, his fingers reaching out to press against the pulse point on Aerius's neck. A soft sigh escaped John's lips as he felt the steady beat, a sign that Aerius was still alive. John's gaze drifted upwards, his eyes gazing into the distance as he absently reached up to reel his brown hair backwards, a habitual gesture that betrayed his momentary distraction. His thoughts turned to the task at hand, and he spoke aloud, his voice tinged with a hint of discomfort, "Do I really have to fly you all the way back to the city?" The question hung in the air, a rhetorical expression of his reluctance. With a resigned expression, John lifted Aerius's limp form into his arms, his facial muscles tensing in effort. Instead of flying, John chose to propel himself forward using only his legs, his powerful strides eating up the distance as he headed towards the city. Finally, the towering structure of the Hero Association came into view, a imposing building that seemed to pierce the sky. John's destination loomed before him.
The Hero Association's sleek, modern tower stood tall in the heart of the city, its aerial landing base a bustling hub of activity above. As John landed his aerial form on the designated platform, he was directed towards a door, where men in uniform received Aerius from him. The door swung open, and John stepped inside, immediately immersed in the chatter of various people talking. A hero in the corner yelled about being underpaid, adding to the cacophony. John strode confidently through the room, exchanging a brief greeting with Amanda, who winked at him from the upper floor before disappearing into her office. At the counter, a brisk, gum-chewing woman typed away without looking up. "Hero name?" she asked curtly. John leaned in, his voice short and to the point: "John Gray." The woman smacked her gum loudly, typed a few more keys, and then turned her desk around, tearing off a piece of paper. "Here's your file, John Gray," she said, handing it to him.John took the file, confusion etched on his face. "What's this?" he asked. The woman shrugged, still chewing her gum. "No idea. It was deposited for you today." She added a perfunctory "Have a nice day" before turning back to her work.As John walked away from the counter, file in hand, he headed towards the cashier to redeem his ticket. After a few beeps, he received his cash and turned to leave. That's when he saw a villain being dragged in, chains binding his mouth and body, as multiple men pushed him away
John's footsteps thumped through the busy walkthrough , his eyes fixed on the unmarked envelope clutched in his hand. His pace slowed, hesitation warring with anticipation.
Across town, in the bustling diner, a waitress leaned in, her voice barely audible over the sizzle of bacon. "Hey, Ruth, know who that is?"
Ruth's gaze flicked toward the table, her eyebrows arching. "No, who?"
The waitress nodded discreetly toward the man engrossed in his menu. "Silas Rutledge. Highest paid hero in Oakdale."
Ruth's eyes widened as she lifted the tray. "Really?"
The waitress handed her the drink order. "Go."
Ruth approached Silas's table, her heels clicking on the tile floor. "Here's your drink, sir."
Silas's gaze rose, his eyes narrowing slightly as he took in Ruth's uniform. "I'll take it to go."
Ruth's smile was professional. "Certainly, sir." She collected the menu and turned away, her eyes locking onto the waitress across the room
