Chapter 1: Life in a Different World
The quiet room was filled with a faint scent of pine.
Metal candle holders hung on the walls, each with a lit candle whose flickering flames gently shimmered.
In the center of the room stood a square table stacked high with thick books, and on the soft wooden bed nearby sat a young man in a black shirt, holding a black leather book he was silently reading.
The young man in black was focused, reading quickly with his eyes pausing on each page for mere seconds, finishing the black leather book in no time.
He rubbed his slightly dry eyes, slowly exhaled, and then closed the black book, setting it aside.
“Chip, have you recorded today’s target?” the young man in black softly asked.
“Recording completed. Host read for 4 hours and 6 minutes, and 128 books have been cataloged. Information is being classified...” The cold voice of the intelligent chip echoed in his mind, yet it brought him a sense of security, as it was the only familiar thing in this unfamiliar world.
Slowly standing up from the bed, Su Bai went to the window, closing his eyes to feel the gentle evening breeze.
It had been over ten days since he traversed into this unknown world. After the initial panic, his heart had gradually calmed. Although the intelligent chip constantly reminded him of his identity as a traveler, Su Bai, who had learned to adapt, could only accept his fate.
This world was somewhat reminiscent of medieval Europe, yet it was filled with a magical charm!
The previous owner of this body was named Enzo Nightshade, the only son of Okuen Nightshade, lord of the city of Kaiyuan on the Frozen Plain, who was arrogant and foolish by nature.
Before the advent of winter, Kaiyuan City went to war with the neighboring town of Gray Wolf City over the ownership of an iron mine. The armies of both sides fought fiercely. Ultimately, Okuen, the lord of Kaiyuan, used his formidable personal combat skills to kill the lord of Gray Wolf City and decimated their cavalry, forcing them to retreat and rely on their city walls for defense.
After the death of the Gray Wolf City lord, his eldest son, “Kyle Snow Wolf,” succeeded him and vowed to avenge his father!
On the battlefield, Okuen was invincible. Knowing he couldn’t contend directly, Kyle dispatched an assassination squad that quietly crossed the battlefield and reached outside Kaiyuan City. Using lowly tricks, they lured the foolish Enzo out into a forest where they launched their attack.
Though the accompanying guards fought desperately to protect him, Enzo was hit by two arrows and was brought back to Kaiyuan City on the brink of death.
When Okuen heard of the assassination attempt on his only son, he was enraged and ordered the execution of all Gray Wolf City prisoners before rushing back to Kaiyuan City. By then, the real Enzo had already died, replaced by Su Bai, who had just transmigrated and inherited Enzo’s memories.
Knock knock knock!
The sudden knocking at the door interrupted Enzo’s thoughts.
“Come in,” Enzo said calmly, turning around.
“Young Master Enzo, the master requests you to visit the study,” said a young maid dressed in a black and white dress with a delicate appearance, as she carefully opened the door and bowed to Enzo respectfully.
“Alright, I understand.” Enzo nodded slightly and casually closed the window.
After walking through the corridor, there were stairs. As Enzo passed by, the servants greeted him one after another, but a trace of fear could be seen in their eyes.
Since his only son was attacked, Okuen, who was already brutal, became even more ruthless. During Enzo’s recovery, any servant who showed even a hint of defiance was executed without exception, and a third of the castle’s servants were replaced.
Almost all the servants were on edge, praying for Enzo’s safety, because everyone knew that if the only son were to die, the enraged Okuen would undoubtedly have the slaves buried along with him.
“I will wait here for you, young master,” the maid stopped outside the study.
Enzo nodded slightly, not rushing in but pausing to listen to the sounds inside the study.
“Although the war with the Snow Wolf family is temporarily on hold, we have already occupied Wolf Fang Town, which is north of Gray Wolf City!” In the study stood three figures, one of whom was a handsome young man in silver armor speaking confidently to Okuen, “To restart the war, we can completely use Wolf Fang Town as a springboard, and after transporting enough soldiers, directly attack Wolf Head and Wolf Claw Towns!”
“Wolf Head and Wolf Claw Towns are resource supplies for Gray Wolf City. Once they are lost, the Snow Wolf family will be trapped like fish in a barrel!”
The handsome young man was named Xavier, the captain of the city guards in Kaiyuan City. Born in the slums, his exceptional martial talent was noticed by Okuen, who took him as a godson. By the age of fifteen, he had achieved the rank of knight, renowned as the greatest talent on the Frozen Plain.
“Xavier, your idea is excellent! But you should know that if Wolf Head and Wolf Claw Towns are attacked, the cavalry from Wolf Heart Town will certainly come to their aid, and the open terrain near those towns makes the force of a wolf cavalry charge formidable. How do you plan to handle this?” Okuen, dressed in black armor, stood with his hands behind his back and spoke in a deep voice.
“The wolf cavalry unique to the Snow Wolf family is indeed formidable, but the lord of Gray Wolf City has already been slain by my adoptive father. Without a great knight to oversee them, the wolf cavalry alone is not to be feared!”
Xavier responded without hesitation, “As long as you and Uncle Terran split forces, one to contain Gray Wolf City and the other to deal with the wolf cavalry, it will be enough.”
“Are you suggesting that both Tyrone and I head to the battlefield, leaving no one to guard Kaiyuan City?” Okuen’s gaze turned cold, and his tone became somber. “Don’t you know that Enzo was almost assassinated last time and nearly lost his life?”
“Foster father, that’s not what I meant at all!”
Xavier was suddenly taken aback and quickly lowered his head.
“I just believe that since my brother narrowly escaped with his life, we can’t let the Snow Wolf family off easily. I want to quickly conquer Gray Wolf City to avenge him.”
Okuen’s expression softened slightly, and he waved his hand.
“Enzo’s revenge will not be settled so easily, but Kaiyuan City must have someone to guard it!”
“Then I’ll lead the troops to keep Gray Wolf City in check,” Xavier said, biting his lip. “Let Uncle Tyrone stay and guard Kaiyuan City, while you lead the army to attack Wolf Head and Wolf Claw Towns. That way, even if the wolf cavalry comes to their aid, it won’t be a threat!”
“Can you handle containing that little wolf cub, Kyle?” Okuen raised an eyebrow.
“I should be able to,” Xavier nodded firmly and said in a deep voice, “As long as you quickly deal with the wolf cavalry, holding Gray Wolf City for a short time won’t be a problem.”
“Alright, it’s settled then,” Okuen decided with a thump on the table.
