Chapter One: Shadows of the Past

As the sun rises, its soft amber light penetrates the hospital’s huge windows, spilling in and creating a stark contrast with the autumn leaves gently falling in the morning breeze outside. Inside the hospital, however, a completely different scene unfolds; the low hum of machines and the occasional beeping of monitors echo in the sterile air, breaking the intended tranquility.

Claire Anderson, regarded as one of the most respected surgeons in the hospital, stands before the window of her office, her hands tightly clasped in front of her. Reflected in the glass, she appears calm, focused, and professional, yet her inner self is far from serene. Beneath her tranquil exterior lies a storm she has fought to resist for years.

Suddenly, her phone buzzes in her pocket, interrupting her thoughts. She pulls out her phone; the screen displays a message from an unknown number: “The masks are coming off; they are starting to notice.” Claire’s heart tightens suddenly, and her breath quickens. She examines the message again, a chill spreading from her spine to her entire body. How could this be? She had been cautious, taking every possible precaution to ensure that her past remained deeply buried. Her past—the one she had worked so hard to escape—should have become history forever.

She quickly scans the corridor, ensuring no one is watching, locks her phone, and puts it back in her pocket. Her thoughts swirl as she attempts to comprehend the meaning of this message, but time does not allow her to think further. Her career requires her full concentration; at this moment, she must focus on that.

“Doctor Anderson, the patient in Room 314 is stable, but we need you to provide a consultation for the next surgery,” her assistant Lucy quietly appears beside her and says softly. Lucy has always been observant, and Claire feels a momentary wave of anxiety wash over her.

Claire nods, pulling herself back to reality. “I’ll go right away. Have Dr. Harris prepare the scan results.”

Lucy hesitates for a moment, sensing the turmoil hidden beneath Claire’s calm facade, but she doesn’t ask further questions and turns to leave the room. As Lucy’s footsteps gradually fade away in the corridor, Claire sinks back into her thoughts.

Taking a deep breath, she lightly presses her fingers against her temples. This message—too specific to be a prank. But who sent it? Among the people she used to know, there shouldn’t be anyone who knows her whereabouts, let alone have the courage to contact her like this. She has completely left that world behind, hasn’t she?

She gazes out the window again, her expression softening. The autumn leaves reflect her ever-changing world. She has always loved this season—it symbolizes transformation, both an end and a beginning. But now, it feels as if it is reminding her that no matter how things change, some parts of the past will never truly disappear.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the city, in the towering glass and steel structure of Sutherland Enterprises, Logan Sutherland stands by the floortoceiling window, overlooking the entire city. His office is immaculate, reflecting his power and meticulousness. Every piece of furniture is carefully selected, conveying a message of success and control.

However, this morning, Logan’s thoughts are far from work. His phone buzzes on the desk, pulling his attention away from the expansive city view. He picks up the phone and reads a message: “She has resurfaced.”

Upon reading these words, his heart races. It has been years since he last saw Claire—he has been searching, waiting for even the slightest clue about her. And now, for some reason, she has reentered his life.

Logan grips the phone tightly. He cannot bear the thought of Claire slipping away from him again. He has never been one to give up easily, and Claire… Claire has consumed his thoughts for far too long.

“Mr. Sutherland, the board meeting is about to begin,” his assistant James says from the doorway.

Logan does not turn around. His mind has shifted to another matter; he is focused on one thing—finding Claire.

“I’ll be there,” he says calmly, but there is an edge of danger in his voice. He places the phone in his pocket, fully aware that today will mark the end of his long search.

Later that day, Claire sits in a dimly lit corner of a café. For years, this place has been her sanctuary for solitude. The warm lighting and soft murmur of conversations provide her a sense of comfort after long, exhausting shifts at the hospital. Here, no one knows she is Dr. Claire Anderson—the talented surgeon. She is just Claire, an anonymous and safe existence.

She absently stirs her coffee, her mind still replaying that mysterious message from earlier. Who sent it? Why now? After so many years of silence? Her instincts tell her to run, to disappear again before the sender finds her. But she cannot. Not this time. Because this matter is too significant.

Just as her thoughts swirl, the café door swings open. A chill autumn breeze rushes into the room, bringing with it a sensation she hasn’t felt in years. Her heart begins to race, her body freezes, and her hand tightens around her cup. She doesn’t need to turn around to know who has just walked in—Logan.

As he approaches, his footsteps echo in her ears. She forces herself to remain calm, even though her instincts urge her to flee, to escape as far as possible. But it is too late.

“Claire.” His voice is deeper than she remembers, filled with a restrained tension.

She slowly turns to face him. Logan Sutherland stands before her, his gaze sharp and determined, as if he could see through all the defenses she has built.

“You have the wrong person,” Claire says calmly, trying to hide the panic within.

Logan’s lips curl into a cold, knowing smile. “Is that so? Or are you just hiding again?”

Claire feels a tightness in her chest, but she refuses to let him see her fear. “You should leave,” she states firmly. “We have nothing to discuss.”

Logan remains motionless. He steps closer, his presence filling the small space between them. “That’s where you’re wrong. We have a lot to discuss.”

Their relationship is tense and complex, their shared past weighing heavily upon them. For years, Claire has tried to bury that history and keep her distance from this man. But now, in this moment, all her lies, all her masks begin to crumble.

As she stands up, preparing to leave, Logan reaches out and grabs her hand. In that instant, Claire feels the pull of their past—a memory of the life she has tried so hard to forget. She pulls her hand away suddenly, her gaze filled with defiance and fear.

“This isn’t over, Claire,” Logan says calmly, his voice full of promises for the future.

Without a word, Claire turns and walks out of the café, her heart pounding. The night’s chill washes over her like a wave, but it does nothing to quell the storm within her.

As she disappears into the night, Logan watches her leave, his expression inscrutable. He knows as well as she does that their story is far from over. And this time, how their entanglement will unfold and what storm it will unleash remains to be seen.
