Chapter 1: Through Time’s Veil
The air in the old library was thick with dust, the kind that clung to ancient pages and whispered secrets no one dared to speak aloud. Emily Hawthorne pushed a strand of hair from her face, her fingers tracing the worn edges of a parchment map. The glow of her desk lamp cast a soft halo of light around her, the modern world slipping away as her thoughts dove deeper into the medieval past.
The artifact sat before her, gleaming in the low light—a silver amulet, engraved with intricate designs she’d never seen before. It had been uncovered in the ruins of a forgotten castle in the English countryside, and something about it had captured Emily’s fascination from the moment she saw it. Her heart pounded in anticipation. This was her life’s work—decoding the mysteries of the past.
“Sir Alexander of Ravenswood,” she murmured, reading the name etched into a faded document beside the amulet. The knight who disappeared from history, leaving behind only whispers of his name and tales of a tragic love. Emily’s eyes lingered on the name, feeling an odd pull, as if she was meant to uncover his story.
A cold breeze brushed her skin, though the windows were sealed shut. Emily shivered, looking around the quiet, darkened library. The room seemed to shift, the world suddenly feeling too still. A flash of light, as bright as lightning, filled the space around her. She gasped, reaching for the amulet.
The world twisted.
Everything around her spun, the library dissolving into blurs of light and shadow. She felt herself falling, as if pulled through a tunnel that stretched through time itself. Panic rose in her chest. Her heart hammered in her ears, the amulet burning hot in her hand, and then—
Silence.
The smell of damp earth and fresh rain filled her senses. Emily’s eyes fluttered open, and she found herself lying on a forest floor. Towering trees surrounded her, their branches stretching to the sky, filtering pale sunlight through leaves. Her breath caught in her throat. This wasn’t the library. The air was different, thicker, the sounds more raw and untouched by modern life.
“What the...?”
She pushed herself to her feet, disoriented. Her fingers tightened around the amulet in her hand, the only familiar thing in this strange place. She took a few cautious steps, her boots crunching on fallen leaves. In the distance, she heard the steady clop of horses’ hooves and the clinking of armor—sounds that belonged to a time long past.
“Where am I?” Her voice wavered in the empty forest, as if she were speaking into a dream.
Before she could process what was happening, a group of riders appeared on the horizon. Leading them was a tall figure clad in armor, his dark hair tousled by the wind. He slowed his horse as his sharp, blue eyes locked onto her, narrowing with suspicion.
Emily’s breath hitched. This wasn’t just any knight. She’d seen his face before—in faded sketches and the centuries-old descriptions in her research.
Sir Alexander of Ravenswood.
The man who wasn’t supposed to exist anymore. The man who had disappeared from history.
Without a word, Alexander swung off his horse, landing gracefully on the forest floor. His presence was commanding, his armor gleaming despite the dull light. He moved toward her, each step measured, his eyes never leaving her face.
“You,” he said, his voice a low growl. “Who are you, and what are you doing here?”
Emily opened her mouth to respond, but no words came out. The amulet in her hand pulsed with heat, and she suddenly realized that the impossible had happened.
She was no longer in the present. She had been thrust into his world.
“I... I don’t know,” she stammered, taking a step back. Her mind raced, trying to comprehend what was happening. “I don’t know how I got here.”
Alexander’s eyes flicked to the amulet in her hand, then back to her face, his expression darkening with suspicion. His jaw clenched, and his hand rested on the hilt of his sword. “That’s no ordinary trinket,” he said, his voice sharp. “Where did you come from?”
“I... I’m not from here,” Emily managed, her voice barely above a whisper. She wasn’t sure what else to say. How could she explain that she came from another time, from centuries in the future? Would he even believe her?
Alexander took another step toward her, his gaze piercing. Despite the confusion and fear swirling inside her, Emily couldn’t help but notice how striking he was—the powerful set of his shoulders, the intense focus in his eyes, the way his presence seemed to dominate the space around them. Her heart skipped a beat, though she was unsure whether it was from fear or something else entirely.
“Not from here?” he repeated, his voice soft but dangerous. “Then where?”
She hesitated. The truth was too outrageous, but a part of her knew that lies would only make things worse. She met his gaze, trying to steady her breath. “I don’t know how to explain this, but I’m not from this time. I’m from the future.”
For a moment, silence hung between them. Alexander’s expression remained unreadable, but his eyes flickered with something—curiosity, perhaps, or disbelief.
“The future,” he said slowly, his tone skeptical. “You expect me to believe that?”
“I don’t expect anything,” Emily said, her voice firming. “I didn’t ask to be here. I don’t even know how I got here.”
Alexander stepped even closer, his presence overwhelming. “Then you are as much a mystery to me as this cursed land is to you,” he murmured, almost to himself.
Emily’s pulse quickened. She could feel the intensity between them, an invisible thread pulling them closer. The way he looked at her, the weight of his gaze—it wasn’t just suspicion. There was something else, something darker and more enticing.
“Stay close,” Alexander said finally, his voice rough, as if he were fighting against something within himself. “You may be from the future, but here, you belong to me.”
Emily’s breath caught in her throat. Belong to him? The words sent a shiver down her spine, both thrilling and terrifying.
Before she could protest, Alexander turned sharply, calling out to his men. “We ride to Ravenswood!” he commanded. The riders obeyed, and without another word, Alexander pulled Emily toward his horse. She barely had time to react as he lifted her effortlessly onto the saddle in front of him, his strong arms wrapping around her as he mounted behind.
The heat of his body against hers was impossible to ignore. She could feel the solid weight of his chest pressing against her back, his breath warm against her ear as he leaned in close.
“Don’t worry,” he whispered, his voice like a promise. “I won’t let anything happen to you.”
But as they rode into the unknown, Emily couldn’t help but wonder what was more dangerous—the world she’d stumbled into, or the man who held her so tightly.

it's an interesting beginning ^_^
