...This is the Cork Beat....This is the Cork Beat

I love it...Oh I love it...I love it....

The lights went on. The small crowd in the club cheered and applauded. The singer a skinny but attractive young brunette bowed and walked to the bar. She sat on a stool next to a plump woman in her thirties dressed in a black outfit with a short crew cut and mannish manners. The woman took the singer’s face in her hands and lovingly put a kiss on the red lips. The singer returned the kiss and signalled the bartender that she wanted a drink. The young man brought her a Diet Coke and a shot of Jameson.

“You were wonderful honey, here is your drink.”

“Thanks Ross but saying this every night is maybe too much....” The singer laughed and blew him a kiss.

“Ross expresses what we all feel when you sing “The Cork Beat” this is your song, really yours. You wrote the music and the lyrics and it shows when you sing.” added Mary kissing her lightly on her lips.

The singer drank the Coke and Ross brought her a second bottle. The dance floor was filled with couples dancing on a Georges Michael’s standard. The singer and her lover watched them for a moment then the older woman stood up to leave the club.

“Let’s go Siobhan.”

“Not tonight Mary, I prefer to be alone.”

Mary looked at the singer with sadness.”What’s wrong with you? “

“Nothing I just need to be alone.”

“Not again, last Friday was enough.”Mary Hurley felt some anger coming and suspected that her lover was seeing someone. Ross discreetly went to the other side of the counter to give the two lovers some privacy. Mary Hurley caught the hand of the singer to lead her to the exit. Siobhan disengaged herself and gently caressed Mary’s face.

“It’s not what you think. I love you and I don’t cheat on you. I need some time to settle in my life. I am not ready to live at your place. It will come, but I still need my flat and some solitary moments.”

“Don’t play with me. We go now.” Mary replied coldly.

“Not here Mary, this is where I work. I will leave now, don’t follow me, I will call you tomorrow.” Siobhan left her lover at the bar and exited the club. Holding the Mace in her coat pocket she walked briskly turned left in the narrow alley which linked Mardyke Street to Washington Street. It was 2 am and she did not feel safe walking alone. She lifted her head and suddenly a smile lit her face, a man stood his back on the black car, watching her and waving his hand. She breathed and accelerated her pace to reach him, she will be safe.
