CHAPTER 1: The Surprise.
Justice had always been a man of ambition, navigating the vibrant streets of Benin with the confidence of someone who believed he was destined for greatness. The city pulsed with life, its streets alive with the sounds of car horns, chatter, and the distant thrum of music echoing from open-air bars. The air was thick with the aroma of jollof rice and grilled plantains, tempting passersby to stop and indulge.
His charm and smooth talk often masked the desperation of his circumstances. He was a skilled fraudster, using his wits to charm his way through life, but his sights were set on something bigger—something that would elevate him from the shadows of his past. On this sultry evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the bustling city, Justice received an invitation from Amara, his wealthy girlfriend.
Amara was everything he desired: beautiful, intelligent, and from a world far removed from his own. The daughter of a prominent businessman, she lived in a lavish estate filled with the trappings of privilege. Tonight, she promised a surprise that made his heart race, a promise that tinged his excitement with anticipation and greed.
“Justice, come to dinner! I have something special for you!” Amara's voice was sweet, filled with excitement as she answered his call. The warmth in her tone made him feel as if he were the only person that mattered in that moment.
As he arrived at her home, the rich scent of spices wafted through the air. The dining room was adorned with flickering candles, creating a cozy atmosphere that contrasted sharply with the bustling streets outside. The soft beats of Afrobeats filled the background, setting a lively mood that made Justice feel at home.
“Wow, this looks amazing,” he said, his eyes scanning the table laden with dishes. Jollof rice, seasoned to perfection, sat next to grilled chicken glazed with spicy pepper sauce. There were also fried plantains, their golden edges crisp and inviting.
Amara beamed at him, her smile lighting up the room. “I wanted tonight to be special. I've prepared your favorite meal!”
As they sat down to eat, the conversation flowed easily. Justice found himself laughing at her stories, his initial intentions fading momentarily. Amara had a way of drawing him in, making him forget the schemes he often entertained. But as the meal progressed, his mind wandered back to the surprise she had promised.
“Justice, there’s something else I want to give you,” she said, her eyes sparkling with mischief. She reached for a loaf of bread sitting in the center of the table. “I baked this just for you, but there’s a surprise inside!”
Curiosity piqued, Justice leaned forward, intrigued. The bread looked homemade, its crust golden and inviting. As she handed it to him, he felt a surge of excitement. What could it be?
He tore into the bread, eager to uncover Amara’s surprise. To his astonishment, nestled within the fluffy interior was a small squish package stunning star-shaped necklace. Its silver surface gleamed in the candlelight, and his heart raced at the sight. This was a piece he had admired but could never afford.
“Wow, Amara! This is incredible!” he exclaimed, though his mind raced with thoughts of how he could use this gift to manipulate her further. The necklace represented everything he desired—wealth, status, and a way to charm his way into a life of luxury.
“I heard you mention it the other day,” she said, her face glowing with pride. “I thought it would be a nice surprise.”
A pang of guilt washed over him for a brief moment, but it was quickly overshadowed by his greed. In his heart, he felt a twinge of remorse for his intentions, but it was drowned out by the thrill of having something so valuable.
As he took a bite of the bread, savoring the flavors, he felt something strange. A sharp pain seized him, and before he could comprehend what was happening, he choked, swallowing the necklace whole. Panic spread across Amara's face as she rushed to his side, her expression shifting from joy to horror.
“Justice!” she screamed, her voice tinged with fear. “Are you okay?”
He gasped for air, clutching his throat, the world around him fading into darkness. As his vision blurred, he caught a glimpse of Amara’s desperate face before everything went black.
Let's watch out for chatter 2, if justice will continue his fraudster life, or change to a better person, but you know is an African let's see.
