Someone on the Street

It was a Monday when Adalyn Jackson was thinking about Robert Puzak again. Robert was an understanding boy with a solid but short body. Adalyn walked over to the window and reflected on her cozy surroundings. She had always loved quiet Strasburg with its small, suburban houses. It was a place that encouraged her tendency to feel happy. She stared out the window, wondering if there would ever be love in her life.

“ Robert…” She murmured. “When will you come? I have been waiting.”. Adalyn decided to get a snack when she caught a glimpse of someone on the street. “Robert?” she wondered. He walked across the street to her door and knocked. “Adalyn!” she heard him calling. “I’m coming in!”. The door opened and he walked in. “I’m sorry I left, Adalyn,” said Robert. Adalyn walked up to him and stared into his eyes. Adalyn then ran past him into the bathroom. A tear fell down her cheek. Robert followed her. He grabbed her arm twirled her around and hugged her close. “Adalyn,” he said. “I will never leave you again!”. “ There is something about you, Robert,” said Adalyn. “But I don’t know what.”.

“There is, Adalyn, but I must not let you know,” said Robert. He let go of Adalyn and walked to her kitchen, making himself a cup of coffee. Adalyn followed him and said, “Robert, why can’t you tell me?”. “Because it would affect me and you,” he said. Adalyn shook her head. “You don’t understand, Robert. You just don’t…” Adalyn said. She twirled around and walked to her room. She got changed into a sweater and leggings and walked into the living room.

She put on some boots and grabbed her purse. “Robert,” she said, “I am going to the store for a while. Can you please watch the house while I am gone?”. “Sure, but don’t go too long, I have to go to my girlfriend’s house today,” said Robert. Adalyn’s throat became dry as if she just walked through a desert. She looked at him for a second before saying “You can just leave, then. Thank you.”. Puzzled, Robert looked at her for a brief moment before heading out the door.
