A trip with recognition

It was a chilly Friday morning, the kind that made you want to snuggle deeper into your warm clothes, when we gathered at the beautiful Kimaswa SA Primary School for what promised to be an extraordinary parade. The sun was just beginning to rise, casting a soft golden glow on the school’s vibrant green grounds. Our head teacher, Mr. Kiboi, stood before us with a brighter smile than usual, a stark contrast to his typical serious demeanor that often sent shivers down our spines. He stepped forward, licked his lips—a nervous habit of his—and cleared his throat, capturing our attention in an instant.

"My fellow determined teachers and hardworking students, good morning!" His voice rang out with an unusual enthusiasm. "I’m thrilled to announce that our president has something special to share with the Standard Eight candidates today at the Milimani Hotel in Bungoma."

A murmur of disbelief rippled through the crowd; we exchanged incredulous glances, unsure if we were dreaming or if this was some elaborate joke. But as if to dispel any doubts, two gleaming 66-seater school buses rolled up to our school gate, their polished surfaces reflecting the morning light like beacons of adventure. For many of us, this was the first time we’d ever heard of the hotel—known as the best and largest in our county—and even more startling was the realization that most of us had never truly seen what Bungoma looked like; all we knew was Kimaswa, our beloved hometown nestled in familiarity.

"We’ll be boarding in groups of 62 students per bus," Mr. Kiboi explained, his excitement infectious. "Each bus will have three teachers accompanying you for guidance and in case of emergencies." The air buzzed with anticipation as we quickly formed lines, our hearts racing with exhilaration as our names were ticked off the register. I boarded the last bus, my heart pounding with excitement and a hint of nervousness. Beside me sat my dearest friend Delvine, her eyes sparkling with joy as we settled into our seats by the window.

After a brief prayer led by Mr. Kapchanga—his voice steady and reassuring—the buses rolled toward the school gate. The front bus came to a sudden halt just as we were about to exit, causing a wave of curiosity among us until we heard Mr. Kapchanga’s calm voice reminding everyone to fasten their seatbelts. With that gentle nudge, we gradually picked up speed until it felt just right; the world outside began to blur into a tapestry of colors.

As we passed through charming towns like Cheptais and Chwele, each one more fascinating than the last, I felt a sense of wonder wash over me. I had never realized how beautiful our county could be! As we made a quick U-turn on a T-shaped road in Chwele, my eyes widened at the sight of a cooperative bank for the first time—serious-looking officers stood guard outside like sentinels, ensuring that any thief would think twice before attempting an escape.

The journey continued with excitement bubbling inside us! Delvine leaned closer and whispered that this was her first time traveling by bus; her joy was contagious. I couldn’t help but agree—this was truly an unforgettable adventure that would etch itself into our memories forever.

As we approached Bungoma Town, the buses slowed down to cross a beautifully designed speed bump—a small yet impressive structure that seemed almost artistic against the backdrop of bustling life around it.

"This serves as both a speed regulator for vehicles and a safe crossing for pedestrians," Mr. Kapchanga explained with pride, his voice laced with affection for our surroundings.

We crossed the Webuye to Busia highway and began descending through stunning sights that Bungoma had to offer—lush greenery mingling with vibrant market stalls bursting with colors and aromas that awakened our senses. The anticipation in the air was palpable as we neared our destination; excitement crackled like electricity among us as we readied ourselves for whatever awaited us at Milimani Hotel!

With every passing moment, I felt my heart swell with gratitude and exhilaration—a reminder that sometimes life’s most beautiful experiences come when you least expect them. As we drew closer to Bungoma’s heart, I knew this day would be etched in my memory forever—a day filled with laughter, friendship, and perhaps even dreams coming true. The journey had started off with a backdrop of smooth, well-paved roads lined with towering buildings and bustling businesses. Petrol stations dotted the landscape, a reminder of the vibrant life pulsing through the town. But as we transitioned onto a rough murram road, our excitement grew. Dust swirled around us as we ventured towards Milimani Hotel, where adventure awaited.

As we drove through vast stretches of land, nature’s beauty unfolded before our eyes. The scenery was nothing short of breathtaking; piles of natural rocks stood majestically, as if sculpted by the hands of the most talented artists. Each rock formation seemed to tell a story, whispering tales of time and earth. We couldn't help but marvel at the view, and after a few introductions filled with laughter and anticipation, we were invited to immerse ourselves in this stunning landscape.

Standing atop those rocks, we gazed down at Bungoma town sprawled out beneath us, a patchwork of life and energy. It was as if we were perched on the edge of the world. Just then, Lucy, our ever-enthusiastic class prefect, broke the momentary silence with her infectious humor. “I could fly over this town and come back safely!” she joked, her laughter ringing through the air and lifting everyone’s spirits even higher.

The day continued to unfold like a dream. We indulged in sweet, plump grapes and an array of juicy fruits that seemed to burst with flavor. The ripe mangoes tempted us with their golden hues, but our bellies were already full from our earlier feasting. Just then, our head teacher summoned us to gather in the guest room; it was time for something monumental.

Minutes later, an electric buzz filled the room as the president stepped into view! Our hearts raced—this was someone we had only seen on screens before. Cameras flashed from every angle; it felt surreal to be part of such an important moment that would be broadcast live on television!

“Thank you for responding positively to my call,” he began, his voice resonating with authority yet warmth. “The main reason I called you here is to help you envision and experience success.” As he spoke about the transformative power of education, his words struck a chord deep within me. I had poured my heart into my studies, and his acknowledgment made it all worthwhile.

He continued passionately, “You have all done your best through your primary level education, and I know you will excel in your final exams.” And then came the unexpected twist—a highlight that would forever change my life. “I want to congratulate an exceptional young innovator among you,” he announced. My heart raced as he mentioned my name—! Joseph Wanjala, gospel artist picture.

“Joseph has created an education-based app called Josha AI.”

In that moment, disbelief washed over me like a tidal wave; I had never imagined that my small project could gain such recognition! The president's words echoed in my mind: *the world knows my work.* He beckoned me forward amidst a sea of brilliant minds and eager faces. Joy bubbled up inside me as I approached him.

“Everyone has the potential to change the world through self-driven ability and innovation,” he said firmly. “Because of Joseph’s unforgettable innovative mind, I’m going to award your school a prize.” My heart swelled with pride; this wasn’t just recognition for me but for my entire school!

As I stood before so many intelligent individuals—including the president—joy flooded my heart like never before. I was handed a microphone while shaking hands with him; it felt surreal yet empowering. With emotions swirling inside me like a storm, I spoke into the microphone: “Your personal benefit can also be the majority benefit!” My words felt profound—an echo of everything I believed.

The president smiled warmly as he presented me with a certificate emblazoned with 'Kimaswa SA Primary School' in bold Serif font. Holding it aloft for everyone to see felt like grasping my dreams in my hands—a tangible symbol of hard work and perseverance.

What unfolded after that moment is too vast to contain in mere words; it deserves its own story—a day filled with celebration, laughter, and inspiration that would linger in our hearts forever!
