The Distant Echo

😼Author's POV:

Perth sighed with exhaustion as he loosened his tie, relieved to be back home after a long and arduous day at the office. "Son, I'm home!"

The weight of his responsibilities seemed to disappear as he walked into his house. However, his eagerness was met with a disheartening silence, as there was no response. It was as if the essence of warmth and familiarity he had once felt when he walked through the door was dissipated into thin air.

Navigating his way to the bedroom, Perth found his Saint idly seated on their bed, his gaze fixated on the empty wall before him. He looked lost in his thoughts. Concerned, he tried to start a conversation.

"Did you have a tough day?" he asked, the weariness evident in his voice.

Saint's response was devoid of any enthusiasm. "Hmm? Oh, you're home. It was alright," he replied flatly.

An uncomfortable silence fell between them. Perth looked around their bedroom, a place that used to be full of cherished memories. It held memories of their passionate love and togetherness.

He thought back, remembering the excitement they felt when they had excitedly moved in together some years ago after their love marriage, they were so eager to start their new life together. But now, the room felt empty and lifeless, like the ghost of what their relationship once was.

Finally, Saint broke the silence, his voice lacking its usual warmth. "Dinner will be served at table in 10 minutes. I made Gaeng Keow Wan Gai and Khao Pad."

Perth nodded. "Sounds good, thanks," he thanked him politely, appreciating his efforts.

They ate their meal in silence, the clinking sound of silverware utensils is a sad reminder of the lively conversations they were used to have. Perth glanced up at his husband, still enchanting and beautiful beyond words after all these years, but there was a sense of unfamiliarity between them. He felt like.. he hardly knew him anymore.

Later that night, they went through the motions of their nighttime routine - Saint reading a book in bed while Perth caught up on work emails. The passion and intimacy they once had shared in their relationship was now faded away.

As Perth climbed into their cozy bed, Saint closed his book to put it down at the nightstand, beside him and moved his slender finger to turn off the light.

In the dark, Perth contemplated reaching out to him, but the gulf between them felt so immense to him. Instead, he simply said "Goodnight," as he had done for countless nights prior.

"Night," he replied softly.

Lying in bed, Perth stared up at the ceiling. The echo of his husband's voice emphasized the emotional distance stretching between them as he thought about the emotional distance that now separated them.

He wondered how they had come to be two strangers sharing a life but not much else. With a heavy heart, he eventually drifted off to his sleep, the fire that had once fueled their love now reduced to dying embers.

To be continued....

Until then,

Stay tuned 🙂

Obsidian: He's hilarious. Like, actually. I loved it. You're writing style is great, although you could do with a few less murmurs and mutters.
