The Shattered Circle
The map lay before Arielle, its edges curling and peeling as though it had lived a thousand lives. The paper felt fragile beneath her fingers, yet every line and curve seemed to pulse with the weight of a history she had been part of but never fully understood. She had once been inside that circle—the one at the center of the map, the symbol of power, control, and untold secrets. But now, that circle was shattered, just like everything she had once believed in. The ink was smudged from years of careful study, the corners worn down from repeated handling, each mark representing a moment of betrayal.
Arielle traced the cracks in the map, her fingertips brushing against the broken edges. It was as if the map itself had fractured in sympathy with her life, a silent testament to the destruction she had endured.
Her fingers lingered over the jagged line that cut through the circle. It was a scar. A reminder of the moment everything had fallen apart. Her family, once part of that inner circle, had been torn from its position by forces beyond their control. Her control.
Arielle swallowed hard, pushing down the gnawing sense of dread that rose in her chest. The shadows in the room seemed to close in, the walls closing in on her, as if the house itself was complicit in the memories that haunted her. She couldn’t stay in this place any longer—not with the past creeping up around her.
The phone buzzed sharply on the table, its jarring noise breaking the silence that had wrapped around her. A single message: “It’s time.”
Her heart skipped a beat. It’s time. Three simple words, but they carried the weight of everything she had been planning for months. Everything she had been preparing for—waiting for—was coming to a head. There would be no more waiting, no more quiet planning. The game was about to begin, and the stakes were higher than she could ever have imagined.
Arielle took a steadying breath and glanced around the room one last time. The map, the fading remnants of her family’s legacy, the photographs that lined the shelves—all of it felt like an illusion, a life she could no longer claim as her own. The people who had once been her allies, her family, her mentors, had betrayed her. They had sold her out in a moment of weakness, their ambition clouding their judgment.
But Arielle had learned something in the aftermath of that betrayal. The world was broken. The system was rigged, and the ones at the top—those untouchable elites who held the power—were the ones who had orchestrated the fall. And it wasn’t just about revenge anymore. No, it had evolved into something darker, something more dangerous.
She needed to destroy the system. Not just avenge what had been lost, but to take down the entire structure that had allowed her—and countless others—to be crushed underfoot. She needed to bring the circle down, piece by shattered piece, and show them all that they were no longer in control.
The phone buzzed again, but this time the message was different. “You know what to do.”
Arielle didn’t respond. She didn’t need to. The message wasn’t a question—it was a command. A reminder. A warning. The world was a ticking clock, and the moment she stepped out the door, there would be no turning back. There would be no safety net. Only the cold, harsh reality of a game where the players were ruthless and the consequences unforgiving.
Arielle pushed the phone aside and stood, her legs trembling slightly under the weight of her decision. She had prepared for this moment for so long, but it felt as though the ground beneath her had shifted. She felt like a different person—someone who had become familiar with loss, with anger, with the taste of betrayal on her tongue. She didn’t know if she was ready, but readiness had never been the point. Survival was.
She turned toward the door. It creaked open before she could even reach for the handle, and Arielle didn’t need to see who stood on the other side. She could feel the weight of his presence in the air, like a shadow that had been following her for far too long.
Noah.
His silhouette filled the doorway, tall and imposing, his face unreadable as always. His cold, piercing eyes met hers, and for a moment, she thought she saw something in them—something fleeting, something almost... human. But the moment passed too quickly, replaced by the hardened mask of someone who had seen too much, who had been through too much.
“Are you ready?” His voice was low, calm, but there was an edge to it that Arielle could never quite ignore. He wasn’t asking out of concern; he was testing her resolve.
Arielle met his gaze without hesitation. She couldn’t afford doubt now. She couldn’t afford to let him see the cracks in her armor. She had learned that much from him—never show weakness. Never let anyone see what you’re truly feeling. Because in this world, the moment you did, you were done.
“I’m ready,” she said, her voice steady despite the churning turmoil inside her.
Noah didn’t respond immediately. Instead, he gave her a single nod before turning and walking out the door, his steps silent on the hardwood floor. Arielle followed him, her breath steady, but her heart pounding with the weight of everything she was about to face.
The city outside felt different as she stepped into the cold night air. The streetlights flickered above her, casting long shadows that seemed to stretch out forever. The air smelled faintly of rain, but there was something else beneath it—a sense of inevitability, of finality.
The car was waiting for them, sleek and dark, blending effortlessly into the city’s landscape. It didn’t look like much, but Arielle knew better than to judge by appearances. In this world, it was never about what things seemed to be. It was about what they were hiding.
The doors clicked open as she slid into the back seat, Noah following close behind her. The driver didn’t speak, his eyes fixed straight ahead, as if the world beyond the windshield was of no concern to him. Arielle barely noticed the car pulling away. Her focus was entirely on the task ahead—on the mission that would determine everything.
The road stretched out before them, the city flickering by in a blur of lights and shadows. Arielle’s phone buzzed again, a third message: “Don’t forget why you’re doing this.”
The words were simple, but they cut deeper than any blade. She didn’t need the reminder. She hadn’t forgotten. She couldn’t forget. Not after everything they had done to her family. Not after they had taken everything from her.
The city was a mask, a façade, and she had spent too long behind it, pretending everything was fine. Now, it was time to tear it down. Time to expose the cracks. The truth was ugly, and the people who held the power were even uglier. But Arielle had learned that there was no redemption for them. They would burn with the system they had built.
She felt Noah’s eyes on her, but she didn’t meet his gaze. She couldn’t afford to. There was something about the way he watched her—too much knowing, too little emotion—that unsettled her. He had his own demons, his own agenda, and Arielle wasn’t foolish enough to think she could fully trust him.
But she needed him. She needed his skills, his knowledge, his ruthlessness. In the game they were about to play, loyalty was a luxury neither of them could afford.
“Do you trust me?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Noah’s gaze never wavered. “Not yet,” he replied.
Arielle nodded. It was the truth. She didn’t trust him, either. But trust wasn’t something that would get her through this. Survival would.
The car slowed, and Arielle’s stomach tightened as they neared their destination. This was it. The moment she had been waiting for, the culmination of all her planning, all her preparation.
The time had come to begin the destruction.
And there would be no turning back.

Hi Smiling_Aussie,
I just finished reading your story Circle of Mysteries and I loved it so much. Your writing is gripping and immersive, and I kept picturing how it would look as a visually intense comic.
I really loved the opening scene in Chapter 1, where Arielle, in the aftermath of her personal loss, tries to pick up the pieces of her shattered life. The moment when she uncovers secrets about those in power and realizes that her family's downfall wasn't an accident is filled with tension and intrigue. This revelation sets the tone for the rest of the story and would translate beautifully into comic panels, capturing the shock and determination in Arielle's expression.
Another standout is the development in Chapter 2, where Arielle, with Noah by her side, enters a world of high-stakes espionage, hidden alliances, and lethal games. The dynamic between Arielle and Noah, as they dig deeper into the conspiracy, provides rich material for visual storytelling. Illustrating their interactions and the dangerous world they navigate would add depth and excitement to the narrative.
I’m a commissioned artist, and I’d love to draw your story into a comic/manga. No pressure though.I just think your suspenseful narrative and complex characters would shine in comic form.
