Die Handlung des Romans dreht sich um Christine, eine junge Frau, die vor Jahren ihrem brutalen Entführer Joshua entkommen konnte. Doch obwohl sie glaubte, den Albtraum hinter sich gelassen zu haben, wird ihre Vergangenheit sie erneut einholen: Christine ist schwanger mit Joshuas Kind. Als sie in die USA zurückkehrt, um ihre verschwundene Mutter zu suchen, gerät sie in einen gefährlichen Strudel aus Intrigen, Verrat und tödlicher Gefahr. Nicht nur Joshua verfolgt Christine mit eisernem Willen. Auch Maria, die Tochter eines mächtigen Kartellbosses, hat ihre eigenen finsteren Absichten. Sie ist entschlossen, Christine um jeden Preis auszuschalten, um ein Geheimnis zu bewahren, das ihr Leben zerstören könnte. Gleichzeitig verstrickt sich Michael, Christines bester Freund, in eine fatale Affäre mit Maria – ohne zu wissen, dass er selbst Teil eines perfiden Spiels wird.
