Locked In

Elle’s alarm softly chimes in the early morning light, and she slowly opens her eyes. The room is still dim, with the pale winter sun just beginning to creep through the frosty windows. She can hear the quiet whisper of snowflakes gently drifting down outside, muffling the usual morning sounds. The air in her room is crisp, and she burrows a little deeper into her warm, cozy blankets, savoring the contrast between the chill outside and her snug haven. As she stretches, she catches a glimpse of the world beyond her window—everything is blanketed in a pristine layer of snow, turning the landscape into a serene, white wonderland.

She can almost smell the comforting aroma of a hot drink waiting for her, promising warmth and comfort. The promise of a peaceful, snowy day fills her with a quiet excitement, as she contemplates the pleasures of a day spent indoors, wrapped in warmth, with the occasional foray into the frosty, fresh air.

Elle steps into a quaint little diner a few hours later, its windows fogged up from the warmth inside contrasting with the cold, snowy scene outside. The bell above the door jingles softly as she enters, greeted by the inviting aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the comforting hum of morning conversations. Her friend is already seated in a cozy booth by the window, waving her over with a smile.

They share a hearty breakfast—scrambled eggs, toast, and pancakes drizzled with syrup, paired with steaming mugs of hot cocoa. The conversation flows easily, touching on everything from their favorite holiday memories to their hopes and dreams for the new year. They savor each moment, appreciating the simple joy of each other’s company and the magic of the season.

After breakfast, they bundle up in their winter coats and scarves, ready to brave the snowy streets once more. They part ways with a warm hug, promising to meet up again soon.

Elle heads home, her heart full of the morning’s warmth. She spends the afternoon decorating her house for Christmas, carefully hanging ornaments on the tree, stringing twinkling lights along the mantle, and setting up festive decorations that bring the holiday spirit into every corner of her home. As she places the final star atop the tree, she steps back to admire her handiwork, feeling a sense of contentment and festive joy. She goes down to the basement find some extra decorations for the outside of the house.

As she rumages through the stacks of boxes she hears footsteps upstairs. No one is meant to be there. Her family doesnt arrive for 3 more days. Unfortunately she was currently sadly single with a huge crush on a man who doesn’t like her back. That’s when she hears it. The door slams shut.

She starts screaming for help but no one hears, as it is the middle of a work day. She looks for her dads old baseball bat to break down the door to escape. It was a challenge but she perceived. As she escapes the basement she places a call to the police, to inform them there is an intruder in the house. He looked terrified when the police walked in.

The intruder pulled a gun on the police who were then immediately required to shoot him. Blood pooled on her persian carpet in the kitchen. Elle immediately ran out of the house.

Elle stepped out of her warm, cozy house and into the brisk winter air. The sudden bite of the cold was a shock, catching her off guard. She could feel the icy wind slice through her thin jacket, sending a shiver down her spine and making her breath visible in the frosty air.

A few days pass, Elle is still shaken up by what happen but at least she isn’t reminded of it every day. The following day after the incident, the police send a professional clean up crew to remove the blood splattered across her kitchen.

That was the time when she felt grateful for her friends and family. They helped her and supported her in feeling comfortable in her house again. Her dad set up a security system and her sister, being a professional therapist, helped her through her trauma.

Christmas morning arrives, and Elle’s home is filled with a delicate balance of warmth and a lingering sense of the past year’s challenges. The Christmas tree stands tall and bright, adorned with twinkling lights and ornaments that tell stories of happier times. The family gathers around the tree, each member holding a cup of hot cocoa, wrapped in cozy blankets, and sitting close together for comfort.

Elle looks at her family, feeling a mix of gratitude and sorrow. Her father, with a soft, reassuring smile, picks up the first gift and hands it to her.

“Elle, this one’s from all of us,” he says gently, his voice carrying a tone of hope and renewal.

She unwraps the gift, revealing a photo album filled with memories and messages from family and friends, each page a testament to their love and support. Tears well up in her eyes as she flips through the pages, each photo reminding her that even in difficult times, she’s never alone.

Her mother speaks next, her voice steady yet emotional.

“We wanted to remind you, Elle, that we’re always here for you. No matter what happens, we face it together.”

The family continues to exchange gifts, their conversations filled with tender moments of reflection and laughter. Each present is more than just a material item; it’s a symbol of their unity, resilience, and the hope for brighter days ahead.
