Prologue
“Mommy… what are you doing?” The small boy asked, peeking his head into the room. His mother sat elegantly on her bed, letting the book she was reading float over head as if it was being held by an invisible hand.
“Reading, baby. Why?” She asked as if she didn’t know that this was going to completely blow the boy’s mind. The boy quickly ran into the room and jumped on the bed before reaching for the book. The book was held solidly in place, not moving an inch.
“Why won’t it move, Mommy?” The boy said, jumping up and grabbing onto the book as if it was a monkey bar. “Magic,” she raised her hand, creating a cloud in it to safely guide the boy back to the bed. The boy floundered in the softness of the cloud right until he was gently dropped on the bed beside his mother.
“How do you do that, Mommy?” The boy asked, looking up at his mom with a tilted head. “Lot’s and lot’s of practice, Baby,” she answered, running her hand through his unruly curls. “Will I be able to do magic?” The boy inquired, yanking his mother’s long curly hair, slightly annoying her. “Yes… in time,” she muttered, pulling the covers over his chest as he yawned.
“Will Jade be able to do magic?” he asked, snuggling up to his mother. “No, baby… just you but that doesn’t make him any less special because he has a different super power.”
“Cool! Can I tell him?” He asked excitedly. “No, not yet. Not until you’re a big boy like your older brother.”
“But he’s only a year older,” the boy said furrowing his eyebrows. “Well, I guess you just gonna have to catch up with him,” she whispered. “But that’ll take forever, Mama,” he whined. “It won’t, because time flies by. Now do you promise to keep it a secret,” she said, putting a finger in front of her lips.
“Mhm!” he said, doing the same with a giggle.
