Summary

I opened my eyes. Looking around the room I am in, I see machines. Loud beeping nonsensical machines that I don’t recognize. Tubes and leads coming from my body, leading to those noisy bastards. Okay. I am in the hospital. What hospital? Where? Why am I in the hospital? I look around the room again. I am so confused. I press the call button to get someone in here. A nurse comes in and smiles “It’s so great you’re finally awake, Captain Bendit. We have been so worried. The bullet that was lodged in your head had nicked your brain stem.” I processed what she said. “I have no memory of being shot. Where am I? How long have I been here?” She responded “Two and a half months. We don’t have any emergency contact information for you. And couldn’t locate anyone with the name Bendit to be able to inform any family members.” I laid in that bed.. trying to remember.. something. Anything. And I kept coming up short. The name Bendit seemed familiar, yet strange. Like it didn’t quite fit. I looked at the nurse “You called me Captain. What am I Captain of? Why can’t I remember anything? And why in the Fuck do my legs feel like they are on fire?!

Prologue ~

I ordered my team into the trees. We had been on recon for the last three days. Stupid covert operation in Somalia. We have been sent in to retrieve Admiral Frances and his family.

We were given the barest bones of information. We knew the Admiral and his family had been abducted from outside their home in Djibouti. His wife preferring a seventeen room mansion out away from the Naval base at Lemonnaire.

My team were dropped dead center of a human trafficking cartel.. We had no choice but to go in guns blazing, full air support from the base’s AV- 8B Harriers.

I lost three team members before we even reached the center of the compound. Feeling each bond snap and the ache in my soul. These rebels are no joke. Organized. Experienced. Accurate.

I was laying down cover fire for my people to get back to the extraction point, after retrieving the admiral and his idiot wife. His two children seemed confused andso severely traumatized, my heart broke.

Ak-47s were firing behind me.. as well as from both sides. I was running in a spinning motion, laying down as much cover as I could. I changed out my clip, and my fucking gun jammed.

I immediately switched to my military issue M17 in one hand, and my personal favorite, my Night Stalker Double Stack 9 mil. I didn’t slow up, kept pushing my team to the choppers.

From out of nowhere, I was kicked in the back, and hit my knees. A gun barrel rammed into the back of my neck, at an upward angle.

The man holding me hostage yelled “Release Frances and the woman lives!” Now, I know better. I have been on rescue missions just like this a million times since I was fourteen. This part never ends well.

I looked at the chopper pilot. I knew we had only one choice. One chance. My men were trying to get a clean shot, but my captor was too smart.

I closed my eyes and said my silent goodbye to my family. And raised my hand.. finger extended, I made a rapid circular motion. Letting the pilot know to take off.

I watched as what was left of my team lifted off.. rising higher and higher.. Once I was assured they would be safe. I closed my eyes and whispered “Thank you, Goddess”.

That was the last I remembered
