"I'm not naive," she shot back, her voice sharp and unyielding. "I know how cruel the world can be. But that doesn't give you the right to dictate how I live my life."
I stepped closer, the tension between us crackling like a live wire. "Do you have any idea what it felt like to see you lying there, hurt and vulnerable? Do you know what it would have done to me if I had lost you?"
Her eyes softened for a fraction of a second before her defenses snapped back into place. "You don't own me, Adris. You don't get to make choices for me just because you care."
"Then stop making me care!" The words exploded from me, raw and unguarded.
Her eyes widened in surprise, and in the silence that followed, I realized I'd said too much. I was losing control again, and it was all because of her. She unraveled me with a single glance, a single word, and I hated it.
