Chapter 1: Fractured Threads

Kai’s eyes snapped open, his chest heaving. The faint glow of moonlight filtered through the broken blinds, casting jagged shadows across his room. Beads of sweat clung to his forehead, and his fingers clutched the edge of the blanket as if holding on for dear life.

Another nightmare. No, not a nightmare—something more. The dream had been too vivid, too real. He had felt the cold touch of the shadowy figure’s hand on his skin, the crushing weight of its presence. And then… her voice.

“Kai,” the voice had whispered, soft yet haunting, pulling him back from the abyss. It wasn’t just a voice. It was hers.

Lily,” he muttered under his breath, the name trembling on his lips.

Kai rubbed his eyes, trying to shake off the lingering terror. Since the events of last year, the dreams had returned—not as chaotic as before, but with a disturbing consistency. He had tried everything: sleeping pills, meditation, even staying awake for days. Nothing worked.

The faint sound of a violin echoed from the apartment above. His neighbor, always playing at odd hours. Tonight, though, the melody felt... off. Each note carried an eerie dissonance, like it was meant to scrape against his soul.

His phone buzzed on the nightstand. The screen lit up with a message from an unknown number.

“We’re waiting, Dreamwalker.”

Kai froze. The Dreamwalker—that was what they called him in the nightmares. A name he thought he had buried along with his past. His hands trembled as he typed a reply.

“Who is this?”

No response.

The screen flickered, then went black. His heart skipped a beat. Before he could process the glitch, a low hum filled the room, the lights flickering as though caught in a storm. A cold breeze swept past him, even though the windows were shut tight.

The shadows in the corner of his room began to twist and coil, forming shapes that shouldn’t exist. His breath hitched as the darkness seemed to stretch toward him.

“It’s time,” a voice echoed—not from his phone, not from his dreams, but from everywhere and nowhere at once.

Kai scrambled back against the headboard, his pulse pounding in his ears.

“Time for what?!” he shouted, his voice breaking.

The shadows stopped, then retreated, melting back into the corners. The room fell silent, save for the faint hum of the violin, now playing a melancholic tune.

Kai’s phone buzzed again. This time, it wasn’t a text. It was a video. Hesitant, he tapped on it.

The screen showed a girl standing in a dimly lit room, her back to the camera. Her hair cascaded down her shoulders in familiar waves. Kai’s breath caught. It was Lily.

“Help me,” she whispered, turning her head slightly. Her eyes, wide with fear, locked onto his through the screen.

Before he could react, the video cut to static.

Kai jumped out of bed, his heart racing. The line between dreams and reality had blurred before, but this… this was something else entirely.

The door to his apartment creaked open, a faint light spilling in from the hallway. Someone was standing there.

“You’re not safe anymore,” the figure said, stepping into the light. It was a man in a dark coat, his face obscured by shadows.

Kai’s instincts screamed to run, but his feet wouldn’t move.

“Who are you?”

The man didn’t answer. Instead, he held out a small, glowing thread, shimmering like liquid gold.

“Find her,” he said, his voice a mix of urgency and sorrow. “She’s the key to everything.”

Before Kai could respond, the man dissolved into a cloud of ash, leaving behind only the thread, now floating in midair.

Kai reached out, his fingers brushing against the thread. A surge of energy coursed through him, and the world around him spun. When the dizziness subsided, he wasn’t in his apartment anymore.

He was standing in the middle of a crowded street—one that shouldn’t exist. The sky was a swirling mix of black and gold, and the people around him moved like shadows, their faces featureless.

In the distance, he saw her. Lily.

She turned, her eyes locking onto his, filled with an emotion he couldn’t quite place—desperation, maybe hope.

But then she whispered, so softly it was almost lost in the chaos: “Run, Kai.”

And the shadows began to move.

Obsidian: He's hilarious. Like, actually. I loved it. You're writing style is great, although you could do with a few less murmurs and mutters. I know it sounds critical, but I have the same problem and I hate it. Overall, it was one of the best stories I've read on here so far. I liked it better than those M...
