Chapter One
Lucy’s POV
I woke up in a sweat from the nightmare. On any other day I’d just ignore it and move on, but today I had an interview down at the bakery on the corner. I found it when I moved here two weeks ago. I saw a job posting on their window looking for a Beta to help prep pastries and cakes in the mornings. I had the interview for the job today.
I pulled the sheets away from my sweat drenched body and climbed out, shivering slightly as my feet hit the hardwood floor. Looking back at my nice warm bed with a glare, I huffed and continued on to the bathroom.
Grabbing a towel from under my sink, I turned the water on as hot as it would go. I stripped off my clothing and waited for the water to heat up. Looking back into my bathroom mirror, I analyzed myself.
Long platinum locks and green eyes stared back at me. Slightly wide hips and an average sized breast. It wasn’t common for Beta’s to be blonde with green eyes, and wide set hips. That was normally an omega trait. But when I got tested, I turned out to be a Beta. My parents didn’t even bother with the second test as required, since I had disappointed them by not being an Alpha or Omega.
Sliding the curtain open, I turned down the water until it was just slightly too hot. Hopping in, I stood under the water for a few minutes with my eyes closed, tearing up slightly at the truth. I am nothing but a disappointment.
I know what you’re thinking. I’m a Beta, I should be able to handle these things on my own. But the truth is, that I wish I could be a part of a pack. Us beta’s aren’t allowed to ask to be a part of one. We have to be invited in by an Alpha, and even then it’s truly up to their Omega.
Omegas are very picky when it comes down to who is and isn’t allowed to join their packs. They’re almost as territorial as the Alphas.
At that thought, I quickly finished washing my hair and body. I jumped out and grabbed my towel, immediately drying myself off. I pulled out my hair dryer and got to work on my hair. After about 10 minutes of drying my wavy platinum hair, I walked back into my room for a search of interview appropriate clothing.
Going into my closet I pulled out a baby pink shirt, dark wash mom jeans, and my old leather jacket. Walking across to my bed, I laid the items down. I walked back to my dresser and pulled out a cute matching pair of lace black undergarments, and a pair of white socks. I quickly got dressed and left my room.
Passing through my living room, and going into my kitchen I searched for something to eat. I decided on buttered toast with mashed avocado. Pulling out the bread, i popped it into the toaster. As I waited for my bread to toast, I pulled out an avocado and started slicing it open. Once apart and mashed, my toast popped up from the toaster. I quickly topped it with my butter and avocados, adding a bit of everything but the bagel seasoning afterwards.
I checked my phone as I ate. No new texts. No missed calls. The only notification being my reminder for my interview at the bakery, which happened to be in 15 minutes.
I quickly finished my breakfast, putting my plate into the sink to deal with later.
I headed to the door and threw on my old white air forces, and grabbed my keys. I quickly exited my apartment, locking the door on my way out. I walked down the hallway to the elevator and patiently waited for it to arrive on my floor.
As I waited, a neighbor of mine walked up to wait for the lift too. We exchanged quiet greetings and entered when it arrived.
Entering, I clocked the lobby and stood back. The awkward silence in the air didn’t last long.
“Do you smell that?,” my neighbor ,who’s name I still did not know, asked me.
Was he trying to tell me I stink? I had just taken a shower so I responded to him. “I have no idea what you’re talking about, I don’t smell anything.”
He tilted his head at me as if realizing something and muttered, “Damn omegas.”
Even more shocked I looked at him even more confused. “Omegas?”
He shook out of whatever confusion he was in and looked me dead in the eye and said, “Yeah. You’re perfuming like crazy. Heat coming soon?”
Now i’m really confused, “I’m not an omega. I am a beta.”
He shook his head and smirked like he knew something I didn’t. “Sure you are princess, sure you are.”
I decided to ignore his comment since we finally arrived to the apartment lobby. I exited the elevator in a hurry and left the building.
As I walked down the sidewalk towards Sugar Rush, I kept playing over what happened in the elevator in my head. Why did that male Beta tell me I was an Omega? I’ve been a Beta my whole life. There was no possible way they got my testing wrong...right?
But boy was I wrong.
Because the second I opened the door to Sugar Rush and entered the building, I had three growling men staring at me.
From the statures of them, I could tell one was an alpha, one was a beta, and the smallest of the three had to be an omega.
This was a pack. And I was the intruder.
Slightly terrified, I start to tremble. I let out a barely audible whine, my eyes darting around finding somewhere I can hide. I spot a jukebox in the corner and dart over to it.
Wiggling myself between the wall and the obnoxiously huge music player, I immediately crouch down and tit my head down to my eyes. Everything goes deathly silent aside from my almost silent sniffling from crying.
They left me behind there for a few minutes, but I could hear them moving around quietly.
I must not have realized how long I was actually sitting back here until I heard someone talking almost directly behind me.
“Hey little one, you okay?” He smelled like a freshly picked mango. My only assumption was he must have been their omega.
I whipped around only to realize, it was in fact their omega who was talking to me. Still slightly trembling, I nodded but didn’t move an inch from my position.
“I’m Alexander, but you can call me Alec or Alex. Can you come out love? I promise they’ll be nice, we just weren’t expecting an omega to show up.” He seemed genuine, so I nodded and wiggled my way back out.
Head tilted down, I walked a couple feet away from the jukebox. “I’m sorry for angering you guys. My name is Lucy, I’m actually here for the interview.”
Six sets of eyes shot their way towards me at once. The Omega grinned out of amusement, the beta male looked confused, and the Alpha was glaring.
Confused by all their reactions, I simply said, “What? Why are you all looking at me like that?”
Alex started laughing. “Lucy darling, you’re no Beta. You’re an omega.”
Did he just call me an Omega? But I’ve been a beta my whole life.
The other two snickered lightly, the beta male taking a few steps towards me. “Hi little Lucy, my name is Emil, I’m these guys’ mate. Mr. Grumpy pants behind the counter is Alpha Damien. Though I must advise you, not to get on his bad side like out little troublemaker Alex here.” Ending his sentence with a wink.
Blushing, I turned my head in his direction, “It’s nice to meet you Beta Emil. And you too Alpha.”
As awkward as it was that the Alpha had yet to say a word, it was nice not to have them all staring at me like I was here to steal their money or something anymore.
The Alpha finally turned towards me, but didn’t step forward. “It’s nice to meet you Lucy, now may we ask why you’re actually here?”
Didn’t I just tell him why I was here? Confused I tilted my head, “I’m actually here for the interview, Alpha. There was a sign posted outside that you were looking for a Beta to be hired. That’s why I’m here.”
He gave me a weird look, tilting his head to the side a bit. “Beta? I don’t think so. I can smell you’re perfume from here little Omega. Where’s your alpha? You smell like you’re about to go into heat.”
Me? Omega? Heat?
Too shocked to respond, I forgot to breathe and must have fainted. Because in the next second, everything went black.
