Chapter 1: The planet « Paradise »

The planet “Paradise,” according to ancient tales, is said to grant the deepest desires of its visitors. Those who reach it could claim unimaginable treasures: endless feasts, incredible powers, immortality, or even the ability to travel through fantastical worlds. The legend of this planet sparked a quest—a grand goal pursued by countless ambitious souls—for over a century.

Those who embarked on this journey grew in number: explorers and adventurers, of course, but also pirates, bandits, criminals, and con artists who looted planets along the way. This quest plunged galaxies into chaos, with relentless battles breaking out for control of worlds, stars, and entire systems.

Just as hope seemed to fade, a mysterious group emerged, capable of halting the havoc wrought by these outlaws. They were called the “Protectors,” and according to civilians, they possessed supernatural powers—abilities no one else seemed to have.

In reality, these powers came from the legendary space apples: rare fruits that granted extraordinary abilities. Breathing in a vacuum, becoming elastic, throwing fireballs, changing one’s appearance, or even flying through the stars—these powers were as varied as they were mighty.

However, the quest for these apples was far from simple. It required locating a tiny but vital purple asteroid and finding the fluorescent green stem that led to the blood-red apple.

Within mere months, the Protectors managed to drive the outlaws out of three-quarters of the galaxies, imposing a relative peace. But at what cost? Their actions turned into a form of control, and soon they demanded payment for their protection.

The exhausted and desperate civilizations complied. In return, they received assurances: military bases on their planets, interplanetary defense shields, and discounts on interstellar travel. Yet peace, like the cost of tranquility, came at a price—paid in money and freedom.

Five years after their arrival, the Space Government was officially formed. A complex hierarchy was established, with presidents overseeing every domain: the president of kings, armies, health, transportation… and, of course, the president of finances.

The outlaws, though defeated, never gave up on their dream: finding the planet “Paradise.” After all, the illusion of the ultimate treasure never truly dies.

Thus, a new generation of pirates rose, seeking to recover the space apples and challenge the Space Government’s authority. Among them, the most infamous pirate, a ruthless man named Kravenstaden, became the government’s number one target, with a bounty of 12,400,300,012 U (Universal Currency) on his head. The hunt was on.

Over the years, the legend of the planet “Paradise” faded into a children’s tale, told as bedtime stories to younger generations. Yet for those who had witnessed the war, for those who had lost loved ones or entire worlds, the legend remained alive—a distant dream, a hidden desire among the shadows of the stars.

Heika van Walderveen: I had to get used to the style. It’s a lot of switching and getting back into the story of the characters. Also the different timelines were a bit confusing in the beginning. But once you’re used to it, it’s really quite original. The plot is good, but it’s only book 1 (out of 3), but so far so good...
