Summary

Eighteen-year-old Seraphine Valen's life shatters after a blood-soaked tragedy leaves her the sole survivor. But survival comes with a price—she discovers she wields an unholy power: the ability to command death itself. Her touch can end lives, her will can summon destruction, and the darkness within her is a force she barely understands. Her newfound power makes her the target of the Banes—nightmarish creatures determined to enslave humanity and claim Seraphine as their weapon of ultimate annihilation. Pursued across a world falling to ruin, she is thrust into a deadly game she doesn't understand and cannot escape. When all hope seems lost, she encounters Malrik, a godlike man forged in the fires of hell. With molten eyes and secrets as ancient as time, Malrik reveals the truth. But even as Seraphine grapples with her monstrous heritage, an even greater evil stirs in the void—a primordial darkness that seeks to devour all existence.

The Opening Act

Somewhere in Ravensworth, 11:20 pm

0

The toast sagged under its own emptiness. Courtesy demanded laughter, so it came—dry, delayed, and faintly embarrassed. Glasses met with ceremonial habit beneath a ceiling that had seen worse. Someone christened the moment a celebration, and the room consented, because the town had always favored lies that dressed well and spoke softly.

0

Disasters flourish in such devotion.

0

Outside, the night settled over the street, humid shadows weaving through the air. It brushed against skin with the intimacy of fingertips and slid along the edges of thought, stirring unease like silt in deep water. Thunder crawled somewhere far off, too distant to be a warning, too close to ignore. Inside the bar, lights pulsed in feverish reds and bruised purples, painting every face with the colors of temptation and regret.

0

The sweetness of spilled liquor lingered, undercut by a faint, razor-thin sensation that prickled along the senses—anticipation, or maybe the first hint of doom.

0

"To Chloe," Vanessa announced, rising from her seat, her voice slicing through the bass. She raised her glass high, the amber liquid trembling under the strobe lights. "The last virgin standing."

0

A cheer rippled through the table, loud enough to disguise the undertone of mockery, but not enough to drown the strange heaviness that settled over the moment.

0

But I felt the heat rise in my cheeks. I lifted my glass in response, forcing a smile that felt too tight, too fake.

0

Vanessa leaned in close, her scent soft and familiar, carrying the gentle sweetness of peaches with a warm hint of spice. "Still a saint at twenty-five?" she purred. "My, my, how scandalous."

0

I rolled my eyes, taking a long sip of my martini. The liquid burned a trail down my throat, warming my insides.

0

"It's not like I'm saving myself for marriage or anything," I said with a shrug. "I just haven't found the right guy yet."

0

"Right guy?" Ryan scoffed, his words slurring together as he raised his glass for another toast. "Screw the 'right guy'. What you need is a good, hard fuck to loosen you up."

0

Vanessa's hand crept up my thigh, her fingers tracing lazy circles on my skin. "What do you say, Chloe? Want me to introduce you to someone who can make all your dirty fantasies come true?"

0

I bit my lip, my heart pounding in my chest. Part of me wanted to say yes, to let myself get swept up in the moment. But another part of me hesitated, worried about taking that final leap into the unknown.

0

Vanessa seemed to sense my indecision and leaned back, a wicked smile playing at the corners of her mouth.

0

"Come on, Chloe," she purred. "Don't be shy. I want to hear all the dirty, filthy things you've been dreaming about. What are you into? Do you like being tied up and teased until you're begging for release? Or maybe you're more of a spank me daddy type, getting off on being dominated and controlled. Perhaps you have a secret fantasy about being taken by two men at once, their hands and mouths and cocks everywhere, leaving you thoroughly and completely used."

0

My breath caught in her throat, "I..."

0

"I appreciate the... offers, but I think I'll sit this one out, Van" I said, my voice trembling slightly. "I'm... not really in the mood for that kind of chaos tonight."

0

"Boringgg!" Megan groaned, throwing herself back in her chair. "Chloe, live a little! Tonight's the night, mark my words."

0

Laughter spilled across the table again, voices blending together in a blur of noise. I tugged at the hem of the skin-tight dress Vanessa had insisted I wear, feeling it inch up uncomfortably. The fabric clung to me in places it shouldn't, and I shifted, trying to pull it down without drawing attention.

0

Vanessa leaned over with a grin, her fingers brushing against the fabric as she helped adjust it. "Leave it, Chloe. You look hot as hell. Own it."

0

I rolled my eyes, but despite myself, a chuckle escaped. The conversation had taken a decidedly racy turn, with each of my friends eagerly sharing the intimate details of their love lives.

0

Ryan grinned, his eyes glazed over with the blissful haze of a man who'd just gotten lucky. "Dan and I are talking about moving in together," he announced, a note of pride in his voice. "It's getting serious, you know?"

0

Megan giggled, batting her eyelashes coquettishly. "Well, I certainly hope so. You two have been inseparable lately."

0

Vanessa leaned forward, her eyes gleaming with intrigue. "And what about you, Megan? I hear there's a new man in your life. Spill the beans woman!"

0

Megan blushed, ducking her head coyly. "Oh, Vanessa, you're such a tease! I'll have you know that my love life is none of your business."

0

Megan hesitated for a moment before relenting with a sigh. "Alright, fine. But you have to promise not to judge me!"

0

"Cross my heart and hope to die," Vanessa said, mimicking the gesture with a wicked grin.

0

Megan leaned in close, lowering her voice to a conspiratorial whisper. "Well, there's this guy at work. He's in accounting, and he's got these amazing eyes...God"

0

"We've been on a few dates now, and he's just... wow. Really funny, super smart, and so easy to talk to. I feel like I could tell him anything."

0

Vanessa's eyes widened with excitement. "Ooh, I love a man who can make you laugh! What happened on your last date? Did he make a move?"

0

Megan's blush deepened, and she ducked her head shyly. "Well, we may have shared a kiss after dinner... and it was really nice. Like, really, really nice."

0

Vanessa squealed with delight, clapping her hands together "Oh, it bet it was. And I bet you can't wait to get him into bed, can you?

0

Megan gasped in mock outrage, throwing a dinner roll at Vanessa's head. "Vanessa! You whore!"

0

Vanessa caught the roll and took a dramatic bite, chewing slowly before swallowing. "Guilty as charged, darling. But come on, don't pretend you don't want to ride that sexy accountant like a pony. "

0

I couldn't help but chuckle at their antics, even as a twinge of envy tugged at my heart. It was clear that my friends were all in various states of sexual bliss, while I remained the perpetual wallflower, forever on the sidelines.

0

Suddenly, the loud sound of a whoop cut through the chatter, followed by a flurry of movement. Vanessa had jumped onto the table, her heels clicking against the wood as she swayed with the music. "Come on, girls—and guy! Let's dance! It's Chloe's birthday!" she screamed, making the crowd cheer.

0

Ryan grinned, lifting his glass in mock solemnity. “To that!” he declared, clinking it against hers.

0

Her energy was contagious, and before I even realized it, my feet were moving. I rose from my chair, letting the music take over, my hips swaying, arms lifting, losing myself in the rhythm. Ryan and Megan were clapping along to the beat, egging each other on with exaggerated moves.

0

My eyes landed across the room.

0

He was standing by the bar.

0

He stood like a flaw in reality, a tear in the fabric of the night. Tall, severe, draped in a tailored black coat that drank the light. His face was all sharp angles and shadow, hair falling like ink over a brow that held eons in its line. But it wasn't his beauty that froze my blood.

0

It was the silence around him. An absolute void that swallowed all sound and presence.

0

Music bent away from him. Conversations died mid-syllable. Even the flickering bar lights dimmed as if bowing. And his eyes-

0

When they locked onto mine, the world dissolved.

0

Not metaphorically. Literally.

0

The club folded in on itself. Laughter became static. Faces blurred into smears of color. My heartbeat hammered, but not with fear. With recognition.

0

Come to me, Chloe.

0

My body moved before my mind could scream no. One step. Then another. The air thickened, humming with static, as though reality itself resisted my approach. My friends called after me...

0

"Chloe, where are you going?" Megan's voice reached me, but I couldn't answer. I couldn't stop myself.

0

Vanessa's cheer rang out in the background. "You go, girl! He's hot!"

0

"Andd use protection!"

0

...but their words meant nothing.

0

Because I knew him.

0

Not from this life. From before

0

It wasn't me walking-it was like something else, something beyond my control, was guiding me. The air thickened with every step, charged with an electric hum that made my pulse race faster.

0

Come to me.

0

I was so close now. The weight of him settled over me, an unseen hand on my throat, but I didn't-couldn't-pull away. My legs moved faster, the air between us crackling with an invisible tension.

0

When I finally reached him, I opened my mouth to speak, to ask him what his name was, but no words came out. He didn't answer nor did he look away. His eyes never left mine, and that's when I saw it. A flicker, just for a moment, something unsettling.

0

He turned, and I followed.

0

We walked in silence, the world around me blurring even more. The club's bright lights dimmed, the street outside almost eerily quiet. The night air felt too still, the wind barely moving. And that's when I noticed-it was as if the streets were emptying, the people dissolving into nothingness.

0

I glanced at him again, and my stomach twisted. His form was shifting, warping. His shoulders broadened, his posture twisting unnaturally, like he was shedding some illusion, revealing something else beneath. His skin rippled, his once-perfect features distorting, as if the world around him was bending to his will.

0

My pulse quickened, panic clawing at my throat. "What...are you?"

0

But he didn't respond, didn't even falter. His eyes bled a sinister red, pulsing with a silent, ancient rage beneath the flickering street light. His lips curled into a smile that wasn't a smile at all.

0

My breath caught in my throat, and instinctively, I took a step back. But it was already too late.

0

He was in front of me, faster than humanly possible. Taller now, monstrous, his skin looked like someone had sculpted it from cracked stone. And those claws-long, dark, jagged things- knives carved by bad intentions.

0

I gasped for air, but it was as if the very atmosphere was closing in on me. The streetlights flickered violently, casting long, unnatural shadows that seemed to writhe. My heart pounded in my chest as fear began to overwhelm me, drowning out everything else.

0

No. No, no, no...

0

I turned to run, but the ground beneath me began to disintegrate, as though the earth itself was giving way. I tried to move, but my legs wouldn't obey.

0

Then his cold, merciless clamp of a hand latched around my wrist and dragged me toward him. It didn’t just touch me; it breached me, slipping past flesh and sanity like it had every right to be there.

0

My mind cracked open. An endless whisper unfurled inside my skull, peeling apart the seams of who I thought I was. Memories knotted themselves into nightmares. My fears giggled. My desires twisted into shapes I refused to claim.

0

And through it all, I screamed—except the sound didn’t quite belong to me anymore. It came from a body I was rapidly becoming a tenant in, not the owner.

0

Flashes of calamity struck my mind with surgical precision: mountains splitting, oceans boiling into steam that choked entire continents, and forests ablaze with shadows that whispered secrets I could barely comprehend. Every scream, every crack of splintering earth, every cry of the fallen seemed to echo inside my skull, vibrating my very soul.

0

And then...

0

Nothing.

0

The world went dark. Entirely, impossibly dark. The city sounds-the hum of distant traffic, the murmur of life-vanished. There was only silence, thick and absolute. I was weightless, drifting in an abyss where time and space didn't exist.

0

There was only him.

0

Cold. Unyielding. Powerful.

Author’s Note

0

Thank you for stepping into this world with me.

0

Every page you’ve read, every emotion you felt, every shadow you followed — it all exists because you chose to stay.

0

Requiem of Shadows is more than a story to me. It is a piece of my imagination, my fears, my hopes, and my love for dark beauty stitched together into words.
