Chapter One
Ponce, Puerto Rico (Southern Coast)
I sit on the rock by the beach watching my papa making a phone call.
He always made phone calls. They were always done out of sight or out of earshot. I wonder who he talks to.
He walks back to me, the wind making his bushy black hair dance across his smiling face; he bends in front of me.
“You ready to go home now sweetie”
“Dad, who are you talking to all the time on the phone?”
A dark look flashes in his eyes before being replaced with a happy glint. ”You know, for a ten year old, you’re very observant. That’s a good thing”
I cock my head to the side, "why?”
“That means I’m training you right. Let’s go home baby”,he says before leading me to the car.
Later that night, I lie in bed listening to my parents discuss something before my mother comes into my room frantically packing my clothes.
I shoot up looking at her confused.“Mama?”
She ignores me and heads to the bathroom, shuffling around. I hear my father’s footsteps outside. I swing out of bed, realization kicking in.
They’re coming.
My mother runs back out and smiles briefly when she notices that I’ve already fitted on my hoodie and my shoes.
She finishes packing then glances outside nervously, before bending in front of me.
"You remember what daddy taught you? The roads you need to-”
“Yes mama. I know where to meet you after”
She smiles as her eyes water and roughly kisses my forehead. I go outside and see my father pacing.
"Papa...”
He spins on his heel and ushers toward me pulling me in a tight hug.
Everyone’s so aggressive tonight.
"I love you. You know what you have to do”.
I feel tears building up in my eyes, ”Will you be okay?”
He looks at me for a moment as if thinking, and then nods before hugging me again. I push him off, anger building up in me.
"Will you be okay papa?”
“Catalina-”
“No! You promised!”
Suddenly, the door kicks open and my father pushes me into the room and closes the door causing me to run into my mother.
There’s gun shots and furniture knocking down outside making my heart beat out of my chest.
My mother wipes the tears I didn’t know I shed and held my shoulders, slightly shaking me.
"Run, get out of here. Then, avenge us. I love you”.She said in a serious tone. I gulp and soon the doors fly open, showing my father lying motionless on the floor marinated in blood.
All my training kick in and I hop effortlessly out the window and jump down barely missing the bullet.
I fall on my knees and another bullet flies through the grass next to me, I scatter up and duck in the nearby shed and climb under the drain that leads to the beach and crawl through until I smell the sea.
I crawl out and get to my feet turning to stare at my house that sits on the hill – an entire city separating me from it.
I turn around and sit on the same rock I was earlier.“I will avenge you”
