Chapter 1: Topic of the Conversation

Emily Seawright was invisible. Nobody noticed her. She never felt like she belonged anywhere. At school, she was excluded by everyone. She sat alone at lunch, never invited to anything, and no one talked to her. But at home, there was no difference.

Her mom, Amelia Seawright, was always drinking and doing drugs—she was addicted. Her dad, Christopher Seawright, was rarely home, either working or out partying.

Nobody cared about her. Until she disappeared. Now everyone was talking about her. She was the topic of every conversation in town.

It was the night of August 24th, 2024—her 15th birthday. That was when she vanished. Her mother didn’t find her the next day and began to panic. Where could she be?

After some time to calm down, Amelia thought her daughter would return soon. Maybe she had just stayed out all night and fallen asleep somewhere, even if it didn’t sound like her.

The word spread fast—now everyone was talking about her. It was the first time she had been the subject of such attention. The news spread like wildfire. Where could she be? Nobody knew.

After a few days of her absence, different people formed various theories. But nobody truly cared about what happened to her; they just talked about it, trying to show empathy.

Amelia was devastated. The fear that her daughter may never come back took over her. The energy was drained out of her, and she struggled to get out of bed. She didn’t know what to do.

Christopher, on the other hand, became a completely different person. The grief transformed him from an extroverted, sociable guy who loved being around people into an introverted, antisocial man who preferred isolation.

A few days after the disappearance, Christopher and Amelia finally reported Emily missing. When they called the police and reported the crime, they were informed that it would take up to 10 business days before the police report was submitted.

This was hard for them. They didn’t know what else to do but blame themselves, feeling ashamed of everything they could have done differently while she was here. They couldn’t think of anything else. This shame made daily tasks feel nearly impossible; sleeping, cooking, working, and more became overwhelming challenges.

They didn’t know what to do, but the only way to survive was to force themselves. With Amelia at rock bottom, Christopher had no choice but to provide for both of them. He took on two jobs but struggled to keep up with the demands of both.

Now he was a part-time business worker and part-time store worker. Christopher was rarely home. He didn’t have time for anything but work. His stress level increased as there was a lot for him to do. The only thing he did was work.

Emily Seawright’s parents were the most affected by her disappearance. Everyone knew about it, and while they weren’t as deeply impacted, something in the community changed.

They realized how badly they had treated Emily, and regret began to devour them.

To make up for it, they showed awareness—lots of awareness. Schools discussed it in assemblies, posted condolences, and highlighted what happened, especially at Pine Valley High School, where Emily attended. They got creative; some made donations while others wrote about her. But nothing could truly make up for it.

At first, nobody truly felt the pain, but as time passed, regret grew, and they all realized what they should have done differently.
