Chapter 1

Rovertown High School

Rovertown, Delaware

Alyssa’s POV

I was sitting right by my locker, whistling, while random students were walking back and forth, the sound of lockers opening and closing, echoing throughout the hallway. Blowing some bubblegum, I saw my buddy, Joshua, trying to open his locker. I decided to help him.

“Need help, buddy?” I asked.

“Oh, hi, Alyssa!” Joshua said. “I can’t get the darn locker combination right!”

“What’s the combination?”

“10, 7, 5,” said Joshua.

I put my fingers on the stubborn padlock, and rotated the dial, till I heard the clicking sound. I took the lock off, and opened his locker. “There ya go, buddy!”

“Thanks, Alyssa!” Joshua exclaimed.

“You’re welcome, dude!” I chuckled. “You have your lunch money, right?”

“Of course I do!” Joshua said. “Steak and cheese grinders are on the menu for today!”

“Awesome, can’t wait!” I beamed. I pulled up both of my shiny, black thigh high boots, close to by navy blue denim shorts.

“Hey, I love the boots!” Joshua said.

“Thanks, man!” I giggled. “I got these from the Dover Mall! I love Delaware! No sales tax!”

“Ain’t that the truth!” Joshua chuckled. “After school today, I have to go to Food Lion. I need more milk.”

“You’re gonna make chocolate milk?” I asked.

“Yes,” nodded Joshua.

“When I get home, I’m going fishing with my old man!”

“Old man?” Joshua stood there, dumbfounded.

“I was talking about my dad, stupid!” I laughed, playfully punching Joshua on the arm.

“Yeah, I knew that!” Joshua chuckled. The warning bell rang, signalling that we needed to get to our respective classes. “See you at lunch, Alyssa!”

“Yup, see ya at lunch, Josh!” I said. I quickly got my Geography book out of my locker, and went to Mr. Jenkins’s class.
